Opening my Strathmore Journal - Painting and Drawing Watercolor Foxgloves from start to finish!

Foxgloves are a magical and amazing plant that grows in unlikely places with great enthusiasm. Here in France there are huge fields full of them, mostly on the sides of steep valleys where little else will grow. As they are poisonous they must be handled with care, but there‘s nothing to stop us trying to capture their delicate prettiness in watercolor and line for our sketchbooks or to create a lovely card to give to a friend.

About my brushes

I love that you share details about life in Europe and Canada. I did not realize that easy, affordable access to goods here in America was not enjoyed by other countries. I need to remember to be thankful for that while it lasts. There are men in power who would destroy all of that for their own personal power grabs. As an old lady who's seen a lot, I feel powerless to do anything to stop the advance of evil.

I don’t really mean that we can’t get things at all, but we don’t have as much choice as you do in the States, as far as I can tell and from what I remember and what I hear. . For example, your food markets are generally much bigger than ours in France, especially where I live in the rural part of Brittany.

I, too, am a tactical/tactile/tacit individual, so I understand! Just found out that I suffer from synesthesia also, so my brain is quite busy! Lol. Your foxgloves are lovely. Great job drawing them. I love how the rooster begins to crow more purposely, the goat begins to bleat, and Lottie chases bugs! I love painting like this…inking over first. When it comes to painting it’s really freeing. Also a good reminder to go back with a second layer. Love a your floral paintings Diane they are beautiful, I'm quite useless with flowers 🙈 I love matinee jackets, they look so much nicer than ordinary cardigans, made them for all my babies and for my grandchildren, youngest is 2yrs old so still lots of knitting to do lol. I always buy bigger journals and then grid off the page into different size boxes for painting smaller. I sometimes get 4 or 5 paintings per page.

That lemon thyme is so very pretty. I love the color. My very first professional paints were Holbein. I bought a yellow, magenta and blue. I figured I could get almost any color out of them

That’s true, you can mix everything you need from three colors if you are interested in color mixing (which I am!)

So pretty. Might have to get one of those journals, I'll have a convo with our budget. I don't even own a sketchbook/art journal. I have a couple of Hobby Lobby's small spiral bound watercolor pads and use them for practice and sometimes something comes out looking a little akin to a painting! Lol. Thanks for sharing.

There are so many sketchbooks out there and so many doing “sketchbook art” that we can’t help but be influenced by the trend, and I think it’s a good one, partly because it keeps your work together so you can refer back to it and enjoy it in an easier way than if everything is on loose paper. I like the idea.

Yes I like Stratmore paper the only thing is when I first started out in watercolor the cover didn't have 100 percent cotton or the 140 lb. It just had 300 on it so I decided not to buy it. Soon i learned that it was 100 percent cotton and 140 lb cold press even though it didn't say it. I had a good time watching you paint. Thank you very nice. JK FLORIDA USA 🇺🇸.

I think the Strathmore paper might have improved over the years - I remember trying it in Canada and not liking it much but it’s absolutely great now! (Or maybe it’s just me!)

Loved the mini paint tins and your foxgloves! I had splurged on that Strathmore journal but I sent it back, because I thought it might be frustrating to try to paint on two different textures when doing a 2-page spread. Oh well.

I can confirm that in the US the largest Strathmore paper is $23.. I've been wanting to get one for specific multimedia paintings that I've been wanting to do. Also, when you were trying to find the word to describe the feeling of the outside of the Strathmore book the word robbery is exactly the word that comes to my mind every time as well... But also not I am also a very tactile person If you have this already on your channel that I'm sorry, but if not would you be willing to do a video on how you make your book covers for your your art journals?
