In a Muslim American community in Michigan, the stigma around addiction has caused some Muslim addicts and their families to hide in secrecy, forgoing treatment due to the shame of their habit. VICE heads to Dearborn to see how the shame of addiction is hurting this community.

Well let’s not generalize using the term “Muslim” because Muslims aren’t supposed to think like this and it’s not part of our religion to not seek help for mental problems, let’s say Arabian or middle easterns because that’s the majority of the people in this video

@@dawooddawood5576 Nah, its actually a pan - Muslim phenomenon. I am an Arab, but I got Muslim friends from Afghanistan and India, who say that all sort of non medical issues (or at least what we assume aren't) like depression and addiction are referred to Imams and the Ulama rather than the relevant authorities. Some of them do have the sense enough to direct them to the relevant authorities but most of them try making a financial biz out if it, claiming their son/daughter has been possessed by a Jinn or something, and whats even more absurd is that people actually believe these fake scholars.

I’m so glad the Imam knows what’s going on, and he knows the route cause and problems of addiction in his community. People will listen to him.

That's really the first step, and should be the first step in crises. And what he said is true; Muslims look up to their imams, and look to them for guidance and help. I live in a muslim country where the imams, we call ustadz, are more concerned to growing their popularity, and addressing the crowds way more that addressing the individuals. They treat the troubled individuals like they were an anomaly, and tell them to just pray to god for betterment. I'm glad Dearborn's imam can recognise the problem, and addresses it rightly

@@sinabagherisarvestani8924 Why bother with Alaska, when you can shove them in a 3x3 meter isolated room? Unfortunately, you can't, because of drug withdrawal. When a drug addict goes without drugs for a certain period of time, they experience symptoms from minor headaches, to unbearable pain. This makes that method unethical. To answer your question, yes that would work, if they don't try to kill themselves from the pain they are suffering. Or the psychological trauma that follows, if they survive.

This is the kind of unique journalism that I originally subbed for, years ago. Please do more things of this nature. Not necessarily about addiction. However, unique subjects, that really effect people, yet nobody is talking about and most are not aware of. This may sound weird to some, but I'm glad you even showed him skateboarding. Only because it shows American Muslims are just that, normal American people, who do normal American things. Again, thank you.

@Soturian Stop the misinformation and using therms like "the Muslim World". Considering there are far way more Muslims in Asia followed by Africa than the Middle East and the Arabic peninsula combined, the "Muslim world" is everywhere in the world geographically speaking and is a non term used only in American medias (European here). Indonesia and the Sub Asian continent has the biggest Muslim concentration, followed by various African countries. Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iran or the Middle East come very far behind, so where is that Muslim world you are speaking of? Terms are very important, because they stick and become toxic, just like this one. Just like Africa is far from being a Monolith of population and culture, Muslims are just the same. Each Muslim comes with a cultural aspect that is unique to them. I'm an African Muslim and I find way more similarities with the Christian and Animist neighboring countries concerning several aspects of my religion than I do with Saoudi Arabia or Iran. Peace

@ES R Dud are you that angry at iranians that you will lie about something so easily googleable? it does not come from Iran. It gets transported THROUGH Iran from AFGHANISTAN and ruined literally almost half of this last generation of Iranian kids now adults and addicta and Iran is now sadly #1 HIV ridden country because the islamofscist government will not seek any helpful alternative than just condeming the addicts and making them seem like monsters, and it seems you yourself also have ignorantly made yourself believe that somehow a government as strict as Iran's is allowing heroin to grow? Poppys come from afghan the whole world knows that don't lie to yourself just because you are angry about wars from 20+ years ago. Sad mentality you must live in.

There are millions of white Muslims and most Muslims aren’t Arab. There are even Muslim countries in Europe which have been Muslim for hundreds of years like Bosnia, Albania, Kosovo and there are republics (states) of Russia which are white Muslim and even have Islamic law like Chechnya, Dagestan etc... Most white Muslims aren’t new converts but actually come from European islamic countries even though there are many white Muslim convert and they’re accepted as brothers and sisters

@@imanee9673 how so ? My point is in America we have a huge divide between Muslim Americans and Americans and I feel that is because Muslims are kind of a mystery outside of what interactions we have with each other and their doctrine. This epidemic they are in with opiates shows a human side to them and although it looks bad to them it is actually encouraging for me because it shows how close to being like other Americans they really are. They actually have the same problems as the rest of us and it's from there we can all build that bridge to unity together.

But my point was not that Muslim Americans don't have similar problems to the rest of Americans. My point was Muslim Americans (from my experience) are isolationist in America and most Americans aren't aware of the similarities we have because the religion of Islam is so polarizing as well as ...having trouble thinking of the right words so I will say mysterious . I just wanted to say that I am not taking delight in your community's suffering at all. I am part white and have siblings doing heroin . My ultimate point was it was nice to see a human side to your community and I hope that your community's suffering is a bridge we can build upon to where we can all be what I would love to see which just people on earth (really Americans but I didn't recall you saying you were American and I didn't want to assume) . I’m 10 years 2 months clean 🙏🏾😌. Never turned back to it, I was never a drink/ smoke / let’s try this drug kind of person , until I got into a car accident back in 2004 and took my pain meds AS PRESCRIBED combined with a lot of shit going on in my life at the time made out to be an explosive hot ass mess, I started to self medicate with my meds thinking that I couldn’t get addicted because there were prescribed 🤦🏾‍♀️. went down hill for 2 years until I became a “functioning addict” which is to say I just took enough pills to get me through the day, it was like a fucking ball and chain trying to make sure I always had enough meds. Finally I had enough and finally got it right during my 2nd rehab stint. I never turned to it again (truly). For the people out there still struggling, keep trying to get clean don’t give up!! It does get better!!

I was recently in a bad car accident on November 14, 2020. Since the accident, I’ve had 5 surgeries on my left arm due to my armpit being cut during the accident that developed into a bad infection plus also had skin grafting done and piece of my muscle from my back flipped to my arm because tissue, skin and muscle had died from being operated on to take out the infection. I’ve been on Oxycodone ever since the accident and was taking dilaudid in the hospital. I often think about the dilaudid and how much I miss it. I’m taking the Oxycodone daily because I have a wound vacuum on my back. I do use it as prescribed but sometimes take it when I really don’t need it but more so just to get me through the day and it makes me happy. I don’t think addiction of opioids will happen to me but my desperation and compulsive thinking of it and the dependency has me kinda worried 😞 Congrats on being sober and getting through it. I hope all is well and will be glad to hear an update. Take care and God bless 🙏🏽

@@Shotoclock4081 I don’t want to worry you but that’s how it started for me. Are you on a type of pain management? I wish you a speedy recovery hun and glad that you made it through a very serious accident. ❤️

Mad respect to that big guy that’s running the house. He knows exactly how to handle those situations. His demeanor kept that young man (at about mid way through video) from completely losing it and breaking down. His cool and calm demeanor kept the clients emotions at bay. I worked at a half way house . My job was to do drug screenings and make sure nobody relapses. And if they do then to find a hotel for the night for them bc they can’t be high and stay at a sober living place. The place I worked at also saved my life. Going from treatment into a halfway house is the proper way to treat addiction. Except the rehab stays should be much longer then 28 days. I feel 90 days is perfect . 3 months at rehab with less restrictions toward the last month and then 6-7 months at a halfway house.

being misunderstood by your parents/family and their inability to give you true emotional care needed in the recovery process, is one of the most isolating and painful feelings you can endure. Especially as it is accompanied by your own sense of helplessness. I wish everyone immense strength, the highest sense of self worth, healing and happiness. You are sooooo full of courage and have the ability to better yourself - for yourself, whether anyone else sees it or not.
