the man who knows is talking a bit of bullshit the lithium has lower self drain than agm/lead acid the trickle charge is to compensate for self discharge or any modules like alarms that still draw power so you would actually need a bigger charging current on an old fashioned lead acid vs lithium sure the % capacity discharged on the lithium may be more ie if you used 0.5ah from the 2.5ah starting the cold bike you used 20% of its capacity while on a 8ah battery you used 6% of total capacity you still only used 0.5ah that needs to be recharged , the discharge 4-5 times quicker is just hog wash edit: realised i made a stupid mistake on the lithium you used 0.5ah while on tha acid you probably used 0.7ah so you would need higher charge rate on the acid (the 0.5ah is just an example have not calculated how much you actually used) this ignores the ineficiency of lead acid while lithium is 99% ie 99% of what you charge lands in the battery while acid it is 85% so more losses that has to be compensated for on a lead acid/gel you should not use more than 50-80% of its capacity so you only have 4 - 6.5AH usable but this ignores peukerts law with high drain you can get as low as 60% of capacity so suddenly you can get only 2.4-3.9AH usable from the leadacid/gel while on lithium only applicable in certain ranges pretty sure the amp range you would need to pull to suffer would be way higher so suddenly the lower AH lithium capacity makes sense the one eyed can indeed lead the blind

Why would you use the USB rather than the dedicated 12v Accessory socket? Anyway, can't speak for the USB but on the normal socket the Optimate4 Duo will periodically stop charging and put a small drain on the bike's system to keep the Canbus open while the bike is switched off. Hope this helps.

Yes for charging the Optimate keeps the canbus socket open but that is why I am wondering if it does the same, if you are charging your phone/camera/whatever up during lunchtime or evening when the bike is not running, I have a feeling that the socket would shut off after 5 mins. Optimate do sell a USB charger that connects directly to the battery lead which can be used when the bike is off, that is why I went for that version over the socket version.

Its probably had no inline diode to prevent it feeding back into the panel or more usually a very poorly designed inverter.

The BMS (Battery Management System) on most good quality lithium batteries will work fine with traditional bike charging systems. These Batteries are designed as a direct replacement for the traditional lead acid or AGM type batteries. There is definitely a video in the pipeline exploring this subject as it often causes lots of confusion :)

Had my Optimate 3 since 2004, used for the majority of that time and still works great.
