In today's video completing a trilogy, we'll be looking at a mother who had her son spend $300 on Fortnite skins on his PlayStation or Xbox. Is she in the wrong for allowing this to happen? Is spending money on Fortnite V-Bucks something to blame the child for?
Today, we won't be looking at any Dr. Phil episode, but we will be looking at this parenting to see if it's even effective.

@@clahvb Honestly for his situation I think it's pretty much just a kid being a kid situation above everything else. The companies that put out these kind of MTX want people to spend like that kid so they tend to stick the parental controls into several layers of submenus so unless a parent is knowledge of the game's menus or told how to they will have trouble finding the menu. Sometimes kids also just do things that they know and are told and taught are wrong, regardless of parenting. At the end of the day the parent should have been more careful with the kid's access to the card if they didn't steal it. Though if the kid DID steal the card to do it I really wouldn't blame the parent as much. I would very much doubt the kid was taught that stealing was fine and knew that doing it was wrong but again, kid.

Idk man, kids can really be intentionally malicious when it comes to getting something they really want. If the kid stole the card, the parents should not be blamed, because at the end of the day it was the kids conscious decision to maliciously take the card and spend 300 on it. If the kid just used a card that was already in the system. Then yes the parent would be to blamed for ignorance.

Not sure I agree 100% here. It's the parent's fault sure, but at least a third of the blame falls on the kid. If the kid steals the card to do that, I'm blaming the kid more than the mom. Sure the mom needs to teach her kid not to steal, and the value of money, but when other kids encourage them to either steal or "find a way to get skins" the kid is just gonna fall to peer pressure. And there isn't anyone under 16 who's immune to peer pressure. I've done college research papers on kids and microtransactions, and there's plenty of times kids get bullied for not having cool skins in video games. Same idea as having generic clothes or a cheap smartphone. Community is just as important as the individual parents. Now if the mom connected the card to the console and allowed the kid free reign, the only thing the kid did wrong is not understand the value of money. That's not easy for young kids, especially nowadays. The mom shouldn't allow full credit card privileges to the console, and there's ways to force authentication for it.

Something similar happened to me almost a decade ago now, maybe more. If I remember correctly, I was punished almost exactly like Optimus described at the end. Yes, the kid will feel terrible, but they 100% deserve it, and it's a great punishment.

Just a couple things I would like to bring up: firstly, Microsoft family features allows parents to allocate specific amounts of money to a child’s account, so there’s that. Secondly, our society is becoming so sensitive that discipline is impossible. I am in charge of a group in a high school military program, and we can’t even yell at our cadets, and who da thunk it, we have conduct issues.
@Daboah
@Daboah 2 жыл бұрын
That is just sad. You guys need power and respect.
@stormcruiser2245
@stormcruiser2245 2 жыл бұрын
@@Daboah its not a power thing. what I was getting at is that discipline is not taught by letting people do whatever they want, there needs to be consequences. and the issue is on both sides. children don't have the self control to not make decisions like this, and parents refuse to teach their children discipline through consequences. don't yell at them pointlessly, but don't do what optimus said and just get your money back and let them continue to play video games freely and without question or consequence. when you are in a position like that, whether it is parental, military, job, or other situation where you have subordinates, you don't have power, you have responsibility. when somebody under your authority does something wrong, it is not on them, it's on you as the leader. the parallel I was drawing with my JROTC group is that society is constantly discouraging confrontation. we can't confront our cadets about conduct issues, so they just continue to do the actions that are against our code of conduct because nothing will happen, because we as the leaders aren't ALLOWED to do anything. So its technically our fault as well because can't do anything to discourage and ridicule wrong doings

When I was 8, 9, 10 years old, I knew not to use my mom's credit card to refill virtual currency. I understood money is important. I'll be on the benefit of the doubt and assume the mother trusted her son to not do this and maybe told him how important the credit card is. The kid either didn't fully understand or thought mom wouldn't know because the kid doesn't really know how the credit card works. They just know money "magically" comes from a plastic card. I blame the mom and the child.

Kids aren't all the same. I was a little sh*t when i was young. My mom would beat me, scold me, talk to me about morals and values and i didn't care. If anything, being scolded or beaten made me MORE rebellious, not less. These things only really took root in me much later in life. Kids aren't robots that you can just program to "be good". That's not how humans work.

I remember when I was maybe 9 years old and I ended up spending around 300 dollars on my phone with my dad’s credit card on various games. Instead of getting incredibly angry and threatening to beat me, he collected himself, showed me the charges, gave me a nice, long lecture and grounded me for a week like a normal parent. I never spent money without his permission again because I understood his message. There are different ways to teach your child to not spend your money, not just threatening them.

My brother spent 200$ on Fortnite to buy levels so he could unlock the anime skin in the battle pass (that he could’ve had in like 3 weeks if he just played the game to level up normally) and had no repercussions whatsoever, then did it again a week later and my parents were shocked by it 💀 Like what do you expect? You don’t teach a kid what he’s doing is bad, he’ll keep doing it

How hard is it repeat "pay attention and behave in school, do your chores, don't be stealing and talking back to us... or you won't have them video games for a long time" like once a freaking week. This goes hand in hand for all kind of things for the rest of your life.
@Sherudons
@Sherudons 2 жыл бұрын
The thing about blaming video games is that it ignores the first step just like they do, who gave them the games to start with?, did you link a card to an account and not even think to remove it? I learned very quickly why not to steal as a 6 year old child, I took a dollar from my dads wallet to get a chocolate and he explained why I was getting punished for what I did, it was not rage filled screaming, a quiet conversation and a belting did it, I usually knew why I was being punished and I learned those lessons, manners cost nothing but makes a man after all.
