Giselle remains one of the most popular Romantic ballets of all time. The story brings together an engaging mix of human passions, supernatural forces, and the transcendent power of self-sacrificing love. The production by Sir Peter Wright catches the atmosphere of this great Romantic ballet, especially in the perfection of its White Act, with ghostly maidens drifting through the forest in spectacular patterns -- one of the most famous of any scenes for the corps de ballet. Giselle dances with lightness and fragility, giving the impression of floating through the mist.
This is one of The Royal Ballet's most loved and admired productions, faithful to the spirit of the 1841 original yet always fresh at each revival. This performance features former Bolshoi star and now Royal Ballet principal Natalia Osipova in a breath-taking interpretation of the title role.

One thing I especially love in her performance is a slight element of hysteria. She's not just in love... she's crazy in love. And it sets up what happens in a few minutes just perfectly. As incredible a technician Osipova is, I don't think she gets enough credit for being the best actor in ballet.

1:57 everytime I see professional ballerinas do this step, my mouth literally falls open I was just watching another ballerina do this dance and the energy change is so drastic between these two performances. I love that this one shows Giselle's happiness and excitement so well. This is not meant to devalue the performances of other ballerinas or say anyone who doesn't do this as fast or energetically is bad. I am just so impressed by this performance and this part.

@lucyclark851
@lucyclark851 5 жыл бұрын
Sarah Möller I'm also not an expert lol but there's a thick block of material inside the top of the shoes (the part they stand on when they go up on their toes), so a soft pointe shoe means it's worn down and it could damage her feet or mess up the dance and she could injure herself. Ik most ballet dancers (and especially dancers at the royal ballet) go through up to like 4 pairs just per show bc they wear down so quickly

@mariamatmos4506
@mariamatmos4506 5 жыл бұрын
Sarah Möller softer the pointe shoes become, bigger the strength and effort your feet will do. Pointe shoes need to be smashed and broken a bit before dancing, as they come really really hard when they are new and you can’t dance with them, but the moment they become too soft, you can easily get injured. You can tell how soft a pointe shoe is seeing the bends and angles the foot and ankle do during dancing, but in my opinion her shoes don’t look too soft.
@killjoyer
@killjoyer 5 жыл бұрын
BTS addict the shoes bent the same way her feet is, it’s like she was wrapping satin over her feet and dance. I guess it offered her lightweight and familiarity but she was on pointe and it could hurt her feet (I heard that a lot of the dancers lost their toe nails because of that)

All these Giselle performances, but I've never seen such good acting. Everyone's complimenting the elegance, the perfection of steps, the dress or how gracefully and quickly she moves, but the one thing that gives me shivers, no matter how many times I watch it, is her expression of the character. So natural, so realistic that you forget it's a ballet and truly can focus on a story being told, while perfectly understanding what's happening and what 'Giselle' feels. I've seen quite a few performances and they all were perfect, yet in my opinion soulless. This is definitely something I'll be rewatching in future :)

I've noticed a lot of ROHs principal dancers prefer their shoes to be on the edge. Somewhere on KZfaq there is a video of Yasmine Nagadi explaining how she prepares her pointes and it involves ripping out the sole and trimming what's left with a craft knife! I think there are various reasons why this might be so. One, most of the dancers with the destroyed shoes are relatively petite - I didn't notice Zenaida's shoes looking tired. Smaller feet are stronger. Longer feet need more support. Secondly, ROH dancers have 150 performances a year, the Bolshoi, I dare say, more, which must strengthen their feet. And thirdly, I believe there is a general dislike in the company for the sound of a hard shoe hitting the stage during performances. Done :)

I’m no ballet expert, but I’ve seen some amazing dancers do this piece without flaw, however this one by far is terrific. She moves so quick, precise and with ease, as if she’s a feather. The ending sequence is truly flawless and stunning, the speed is impossibly amazing. Very impressed!

I know the costume doesn't matter all that much, but whoever designed that skirt deserves an award! The way it complements her dancing is beautiful. The way it falls and drapes gracefully around her legs is just amazing. It really accentuates the dancing and makes the dancer look as if she is floating. Its just so beautiful that I had to watch the video twice because the skirt captivated me the first time haha.
