🌡️
Discover the secrets of my cool-growing conditions, ranging from a minimum of 12°C in winter to highs of around 35°C in summer. I'll share insights into what defines "cool" growing and how factors like humidity and sunlight play crucial roles.
Let's categorize these fantastic orchids into groups:
1. *Any Blooms are Better than None:* Coelogyne speciosa steals the spotlight, showcasing fascinating blooms year after year. Also, a surprising pick awaits!
2. *Nice to Have but Not Spectacular:* Oncidium sotoanum and Dendrobium nobile star class apollon make their appearances, each with its unique charm and resilience.
3. *Drop Dead Gorgeous:* Get ready for the show-stoppers! Oncidium sharry baby, Masdevallia ignea, Dendrobium 'Vitoria regina', Oncidium Twinkles, and Laelia anceps grace us with their stunning and fragrant blooms.

I'm not a collector of rare plants, but I was thinking of at least one or two orchids. I have a very cold little flat in UK and no idea what orchid I should pick first. Thank you for sharing that video.

I live in finland and grow orchids on my balcony in spring and summer and on a cold window sill in autumn and winter. My dendrobium nobile blooms every year with fragrant blooms. Miltoniopsis princess Diana "red baron" and nelly isler also love the weather here. My nelly gave me 3 big flower spikes this year. I've had a cymbidium for 3 years that has a ton of leaves and never blooms. Oncidiums seem hit or miss. Sheilob Tolkein rotted as soon as it got colder and humid. Twinkle and Bartley Schartz grow well. Phaphiopedalums do good for me, my ludisia discolor blooms every year and mini dendrobium moniliforme blooms every year. I want to try out zygos, masdavallia and dracula orchids.

Some great suggestions there! Thanks for sharing. I forgot about pansy orchids - I really must restock on those too. I also have a nelly isler - to replace 2 I lost through mites - hopefully it'll bloom this year as those red blooms and scent are a real knockout! It makes you realise how many there are to go at despite having cooler conditions.

@@Grow_Up_Man55 I thought nelly isler's were being over hyped by people until I saw one in person and experienced the fragrance. Photos and descriptions don't do them justice. It's one of my favorite orchids now.

I’ve got my Zygopetalums in my treatment room. East facing window and cold at night as the room is facing north. They are thriving. Was hoping you’d mention them. My purple zygo has just started flowering x

Ah well, my only Zygo hasn't bloomed for over a year. It was in the Hothouse so there was something about those conditions it didn't like. I'm watching and waiting...Glad to hear yours is blooming - they're gorgeous orchids.

I just bought 2 twinkle "Gold dust", waiting for them to arrive. Had a few twinkles years ago and wanted to get a few again. Also, I've had a Den. primulinum (now polyanthum) for the past 8 years. It was in bloom when I bought it but I have not been able to get it to bloom since. I think I have tried everything so far. Any ideas Geoff?

Yeah I really must get some more Twinkles myself Tom. I had a look at your Dendrobium and as a species it looks like it needs quite specialised conditions. You might have seen it already but I’ll put a link to a good resource on its natural conditions at the end. The dry season for it in nature is 5 to 7 months long and the humidity down to 40%! I certainly couldn’t provide that. The temperatures are also outside of what I could give it. Take a read of this: travaldo.blogspot.com/2018/01/dendrobium-polyanthum-care-and-culture.html?m=1 Good luck Tom - I hope you can get it to bloom again for you!

I would like to try a dendrobium, I saw one at an orchid show years ago and I still think about it sometimes. I don’t know the name but it was white with a soft orange center, so pretty…don’t see any dendrobiums for sale much though! 🌱

Yeah I love Dendrobiums. So many to choose from and certainly for me they’ve been some of the more reliable bloomers from the orchid world.
