I had a Waltly frame built up early in 2023 - contacted Sumi in January, got the drawings worked up in February, and received my frame in April. I used the geometry of a Cannondale Synapse as my starting point, since I wanted endurance geometry and many reviews said that the Synapse had very comfortable geometry for long rides. I then built it up and have been riding the bike ever since. The bike now has just over 5000km on it and it has been great overall, both in looks and ride quality. It's quick and comfortable - I have ridden it as much as 350km in a single day without any comfort issues at all. My bike does not have an integrated headset (too problematic / annoying for maintenance for my tastes) but it does have internal cable routing. Weight of built up bike, including pedals, is about 9.5kg. I'm running 105 Di2 on mine. I'd highly recommend Waltly to anyone looking for a custom Ti bike at a reasonable price

@LukeRichardson1981 @klein-concept I'm considering either a ti frame or an carbon bike. But it is very tempting to do the ti frame as the maintance is very low, and that I can have a good bicycle for the rest of my life. When working with a geometry of another bike. Did you just say: copy this frame?

I had a Dean ti bike back in the late 90s. I don't know which model it was but it didn't have that magical feel like my Italian steel Colnago. I'd love another Colnago but those are above my pay grade and the steel will rust where I live. I was about to buy a Lynskey which with their sales are a great buy right now, but their frames aren't a good size for me; either too big or too small. So this Waltly is looking like the direction I'll go too. I'm coming from a technical mountain bike racing background and going to build a flat bar gravel bike. My bike will see 95% road so I'll keep it light as possible since it won't be off-road much. I've started the quote process with Waltly. I'm looking forward to seeing your build and review

Last winter I had Carver Bikes as a "middle man" to have my ti 20" frame made. Carver uses Walty recently when 10 years ago he used Xacd. I had handlebars and forks made with Carver / xacd 10 years ago and are still holding up great. My frame was drawn up at the end of November 2022 and the frame got to me in March 2023. If I were to get another frame it would either be from Carver again or Waltly. I tried shopping with USA companies and either they wanted a 5k up front or just wouldn't bother making a 20" frame. They all pointed to ML but he doesn't do actual "custom".

Sounds like you re pretty happy with your frame if you would consider them again right? Do you feel any big difference compared to other frame materials.
@thatbmxguy
@thatbmxguy 6 ай бұрын
Compared the few steel or chromoly frames the one noticeable difference is the front end is more twisty when stand up pedaling. The chainstays though feels stiffer when sitting down and spinning. I try to keep a 90 cadence and wiggle waggling is something I notice even on the steel frames. It's mainly from a high gearing of 48/14. I reviewed the frame and one thing is the chain slaps the seatstays due to the snake like design. That's really all I'd change.

P.S. Did the builder caution against going with double butted tubing? Mine did. The reason was because DB tubing is subject to crack and fail more. If I wanted it he would only warranty the frame I think it was 3 years versus the lifetime warranty with standard tubing. The weight difference wasn't worth it to me.

No there was none of that. Only that it might not have more impact than 100g. But as i have already spend way more than 250$ to save 100g off a build i thought it might be worth giving it a try. I will check in with them now that i read your comment. Thanks for pointing it out 🫶

I wish you good luck my friend, I unfortunately had two terrible experiences with Sumi, confusing communication, she lost record of my messages and made it wrong for the first time, I had to ship it back (which was a nightmare) and remake a new one, she again missed several requests I made and I got it again different from what I wanted, but she could me no room for negotiation so I had not other option than keep the frame and trying to use it. Anyway, the final outcome at the end I think it doesn’t justify the amount of communication and efforts for at the end a medium product bike. I have quite an experience on custom frame, as it’s important the level of communication between customer and builder, Sumi is just not well organized at all, so many small mistakes that I didn’t like. For me it’s a NO-GO trial!
@klein-concept
@klein-concept 4 ай бұрын
Hey Marco, thanks a lot for sharing your experience. I will have an in depth look if what arrived is what i ordered. To fully understand, did they deliver something different than what was send in the technical drawing for approval? Or was there some communication after that that got lost?
@marcospola
@marcospola 4 ай бұрын
@@klein-concept good question…the first trial I did was a Pinion Gearbox MTB, the tolerance on the pinion cage was too much, we could not fit the pinion gearbox and they forgot to cut the downtube for the belt, so it was done later with some signs and marks that I was not happy, also other parts in the chainstay had a big tolerance which we struggled when building. I obtain to ship back the frame and make a new one but they asked me to add severla extra bucks, now I got the new frame, seems ok and it’s almost built, but Sumi forgot to do few things I asked on the finishing, she shipped without sending pictures and at the end there was not wording and finishing was wrong. For me a terrible experience overall, but again, this is my experiemce, your will be better for sure…but if I considered the money at the end I spent, the time it took and the real final outcome it’s not just worthy, I think custom builder has to be easily accessible, frequent communication, trials and errors, and to do it remotely with someone in Xiamen ….well you must be lucky to get it right, but there is some chance to get it wrong! Anyway, this company has a lot of good feedbacks so, I am definitely in the minority group, so you have good chance to get it right! Anyway, great video, I am following you

I think Sumi is a woman. I went through Amy, currently waiting my frame to arrive (right now traveling from Germany to Spain). My geo is fully custom, based on a bikefit. All the bikes I have tried are just too long and not tall enough for a given size (like if I needed a 56-58 bike in stack but a 52-53 in reach). So this time I designed it appropriately instead of using the ugly combination of 5-6 cm spacers on the headset.

I had a Waltly frame built , got it in last November. I used the same geometry as my Peugeot PX10. I reduced the rake to 40mm, and made the seat tube angle slacker. The bike rides fantastic, very comfortable, very agile steering. What impressed me was how much crisper the shifts were on the Ti bike compared to steel bikes. The issue I had with Waltly was they do not read the quote document sent in, they just ask a series of questions. When ordering you need to email all the specs, do not assume they have the information in the quote document. Need to go over the specs a few times to make sure they understand. This may be a language issue, or a cultural thing. The welding is impeccable, the quality of workmanship is outstanding. I would not hesitate to buy another bike from them.
