Oregon will license and regulate psilocybin-assisted therapy by 2023. Some health care professionals aren't willing to wait.

"I always had this kind of idea that, 'Oh, magic mushrooms just grow like deep in the forest and they're hard to identify and all this stuff," says Sean, a Portland-based social worker who asked that we use only his first name in this story.
In 2016, he and his girlfriend were foraging for psychedelic mushrooms in a nearby state park, where the mushrooms were plentiful and easy to find, contrary to his expectations. But he was stopped by a park ranger.
"[The ranger] saw me bending down and screeched to a halt and came up and started questioning me," says Sean. "I knew it was illegal, but I thought, like, "Oh, they'll give me a ticket or something."
He was arrested and spent the weekend in county jail. He pled guilty to felony possession, which derailed his career. He was fired from his job at a community mental health agency, and it made him ineligible to receive insurance in his private practice.
"It was professionally kind of devastating, personally, it was devastating… It is still impacting me to this day," says Sean.
Four years later, Oregon voters decriminalized low-level drug possession. If that law had been in place in 2016, the park ranger would probably have ticketed Sean $100.
In a separate 2020 ballot initiative, Oregon voters also opted to legalize psilocybin-the psychoactive compound in magic mushrooms-for use in therapeutic settings. Regulators have until January 2023 to begin issuing licenses.
"It's a great thing to be able to start to have this system in place [where] we'll be able to do that work above ground with legal protections," says Sean.
But Sean didn't wait around for the state licensing program. He started treating his clients with psychedelics after his felony conviction destroyed his traditional practice, under the condition that the clients supply the drugs.
"Psilocybin from magic mushrooms has real potential to revolutionize mental health treatment," says Sean. "[Mushrooms] allow the sort of deep work that otherwise in therapy can take years to do effectively."
There's robust evidence that therapy with MDMA, or Ecstacy, is an effective treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder. And the FDA has deemed psilocybin a "breakthrough therapy" for treating severe depression.
Sean says that psilocybin has helped many of his clients overcome traumatic episodes, including a middle-aged man whose life was upended after he was robbed at gunpoint. No other treatment options had worked.
"He was desperate for some relief when he came to me," says Sean. "He considered [psilocybin-assisted therapy] a complete cure."
Researchers have resumed studying the use of psychedelics in therapeutic settings-picking up on promising research that began nearly 80 years ago but that was halted by drug prohibition.

Bottom line. The government shouldn't be in the business of protecting people from themselves. I'm of the strong belief ALL narcotics should be legal. Allow people to make their own decisions. The only time government should be involved is when a crime is committed.

I lived in Guatemala and there, the people got involved when a crime was committed. It was far superior to the government getting involved when a crime was committed. If the government has a monopoly on dealing with criminals, they can then assure their own crimes are never punished and they punish people based on political aims and goals, not real principals of justice. However, when the people handle crime themselves, you better watch out, government and private criminals alike. I was in lake atitlan in 2009 when the police station in Panajachel was burned down because the police tried to get in the middle of the people dealing with criminals. Panajachel is far safer than the vast majority of American cities that I've been to.

Personally, I disagree with these sentiments for various reasons. If a good, just, wise, & discerning government can do anything to keep people & communities safe from dangerous substances, & ALSO EXPAND VERY BENEFICIAL THINGS LIKE SOCIAL SAFETY NETS, ACCESS TO MENTAL & PHYSICAL HEALTHCARE, ECONOMIC OPPORTUNITIES FOR LOWER-INCOME PEOPLE, & CHILD PROTECTIVE SERVICES... ...then society, as well as the people therein, will be much better (& happier)! :-) (In my humble opinion, at least.)

@@TheMouseAvenger there's a giant "if" in there. The problem is that no government is good, just, wise or discerning, at least not for long. The more we beg daddy government to keep us safe and give us stuff, the more power we give them in order to try to do that. The more power we give them, the more heinous they eventually become... especially now that we have a corporate olagarchy fronted by the kakistocracy... every ounce of power we give our federal government they will use against us. Go study history. Focus on nation's that turned socialist/communist... the parallels with them and the current state of the US are frightening. And if you think socialism/communism are good things? Then go back and read the histories from those same nations... The Third Reich was socialist, murdered around 10 million. Soviet Russia murdered about 20 million, Communist China murdered around 60 million... the list goes on... and on... and on... it's time for people to realize our government is not here to help us... Because they aren't. We need to start helping ourselves instead of sitting around waiting for a handout.

She hit herself 3k a day. They used a vaporized resin and she settled down and had as close to normal day as she could. The dad was arrested or something. If these things can bring peace and help, I don’t think they should not be allowed to people at their wits end trying to better for their family. I hope that there is actually some good that comes from this research and it brings hope to people. I would not like to see it just be a get your jollies use.

Even then the brief break years ago is just a break considering ive more or less smoked every day since I was 19. Whenever i forget my vape pen or a joint when leaving the house I will immediately turn around to not have something on me. Addict behavior. I never really became a alcoholici although at 30 years old now I don’t drink like I was 21 anymore. Hell 1 beer is enough for me to get drunk these days. Yet I don’t have the addict tendencies towards alcohol that I have towards tobacco or weed. With being stoned all day, im trying to avoid sobriety, and being stoned is far more functional than being drunk. One of the biggest dangers is getting the wrong mushroom. In Florida they mostly grow in cow dung, which helps identify them. thumping them a few times before plucking them will allow the spores to fall onto the cow dung. The cow dung can be collected legally but the mushrooms cannot. It might be better to leave the mushrooms. I think a little sprinkling of water on the cow dung, in a dark area, will produce the magic.

@@trent6319 Then you Don't know the Constitution and you don't know religion. This is EXACTLY WHY, the police do a SHITTY JOB of protecting and defending the Constutution. FREEDOM OF RELIGION Monotheism is a political tool, it is not religion. The world has always been polytheist. Part of polytheism, part of shamanism , divination requires NEUROPLASTICITY. Which is the expansion and cultivation of the neural net. Without that expansion, your blind to divine reality. Psychedelics are responsible for that expansion, and RELIGION is behind the War on Drugs so the FAKE PRIESTS, can take your money. If they actually brought you to a living Jesus a living Boddhisatva, they would be OUT OF A JOB! Sorry, the war on drugs is unconstitutional, and psychedelics users are more HOLY, than a whole band of churches, synagogues, mosques put together. Religion was created by politicians for political reasons. 🙄 Religion is not a spiritual system. The wine of Jesus is just one instance of Drug Use by God, lol . The old Testament frankensense and myrr burning in a tent, and the thrashing of the wheat for Ergotomine is how the Ancients made LSD, or rather is chemical equivalent LSA. That is the history and science. Anyone telling you different is lying. Freedom of Religion is a lie when you have only monotheism to choose from

@@ced326 Freedom Of Religion is in the First Amendment. So what is Religious, what is Religion and what is spiritual? Is what you have to know. The History of The Constitution is important too. The Patriots that fought the American Revolution were Goddess Worshippers, Polytheist. The American Revolution was fought for freedom Against the Christians. The Red Coats were Protestants. People came to America fleeing the oppression of the Christians, The Inquisiton and the Reformation. Freedom of Religion was not created to Benefit Christianity, it was made to benefit the Religious systems that Christianity brings violence to. That includes, Pagans, polytheists, Goddess Worshippers etc. It's not just Freedom of monotheism to take control of everyone's liberty to benefit monotheistic morals.

@@ced326 So, you see what has happened is the monotheists have abused the idea of a democracy, to impose their violence on us again. WHAT? is that violence. They own the banking system, so economic warfare is that violence. The 19th Century War on Sexuality is that violence. Prohibition is that violence All victimless crimes are crimes of "Moral trepidation " those laws is that violence. Using the war on drugs to take Aims at the sacraments of competing ideologies, is that violence The Inquisition has been in America for quite sometime, and it needs to be kicked out again.

Treatment is not nearly as effective as prevention. On an individual choice basis I'm talking. Not preventing others from choosing to do anything. You should choose to find the source of your depression, it's not magic or random, you're doing something to cause it. Treatment of any kind will never end if you don't source the root cause and kill it.

I've seen people losing their "peace" of mind, like ending with very light schrizophrenic behavior, hearing voices, it happened when part of your brain that wasn't well connected start receiving connection and you find out that this part of the brain is faulty.
