I usually don’t comment on issues like this because we have a very long way to go in the beauty and cosmetic industry in Nigeria and Africa. As a cosmetic formulation and scientist for almost 8 years, here’s what I’d say. There are so many terms and words that are not regulated in this industry especially in Nigeria and people use them and give different meanings to them. 1. No Chemical: There’s no component on earth that is not composed of chemicals, NO COMPONENT. Even water. So when a brand says a product doesn’t contain chemicals it’s either they don’t know what they are saying or they are using it as a buzz word. The concern should be what kind of chemicals, is is toxic or safe. 2. Organic, Natural: Again in Nigeria we don’t have regulatory bodies who vets these terms. Some brands use it to depict that their products are made of safe, naturally derived ingredients, etc. Some other brands have high jacked these words for marketing, because they know consumers are not leaning towards safe products. I personally think bleaching brands who market their products as ORGANIC or NATURAL should be in jail. It’s one thing for a customer to know they are buying bleaching products, it’s another thing to be deceived into buying it. The last thing I’d say is, it would shock you to know that customers are actually the reason why these bleaching brands are still in the market. Because tell me why you want to be 3 shades lighter in 3 business days. That’s definitely a topic for another day but as long as consumers keep demanding these products and we do not have proper regulations in this industry, we’d continue battling this issue.

Exactly nollywood actresses “some” emphasis on “some” are some of the consumers who keep demanding these lightening products cos their directors “allegedly say” (and I’m choosing my words carefully)they have to lighter to get a part. As soon as I notice an actress is suddenly much lighter I actually do lose interest in watching the movie but then that’s just me. Kudos to Nollywood actress Beverly Naya who make a movie titled “Skin” which is on Netflix. We need more people like her so that our daughters and grand daughters don’t end up thinking lighter skin is more beautiful

@@MlleMank Exactly. The skin bleaching industry in Nigeria is sickening and disgusting. Watching the Nollywood shows or movies, that's all you see. Almost every actress and actor has a skincare brand they endorse and only a small handful have non-skin brightening/bleaching message. People should speak out more about it because we can't continue to pretend and mind our business about issues that's detrimental and destructive to the community. It makes no sense to be in Africa, the motherland and suffer with so much self-hatred. Women, stop blaming men that it's because they want lighter skin, be responsible for yourselves. Nigerian men who bleach is even more disgusting on them.

Dimma…thanks for this piece!! Growing up I was like the only dark girl amongst 3 fair sisters. Looking back now I’m super grateful and proud of myself that what our family friends, Neighbors even cousins said about my complexion never for once perturbed me or made me sort to and gravitate to bleaching. I think people don't understand that Chemical is not the enemy and naturals doesn't mean it is good for your skin. There is a reason research centers exist, why companies do beta testing and have ingredients listed. It is all so sad. Hopefully, people watch this and do better

Dimma my 6 yr old. Christ. Thinks she is not beautiful because she is dark skin. Now I work out of the city n so I come in during the weekend n my mother in law fills in. She told my daughter she needs cocoa butter to lighten her skin. Depending on the number on that cocoa butter it lightens you. My child actually is happy at the results. Ohh we had the talk. I told her God created her beautiful and immediately she becomes light her beauty will fade. I gave her pics . This child thanks me and told me I encourage her 😂😂😂. Now the teasing in school has begun. Charcoal! Really. Is that what we are teaching our kids? And it is usually from kids who are just one shade lighter than you. I wish I could show you my daughters glowing skin. If you try to talk to this woman she will say you are ungrateful. I had to buy palmers and baby oil for them n advice my child to remember who she is. Both she n her brother are dark skin but the last is lighter. The siblings comparisons is something I don’t tolerate. But I think this is mostly a girl thing but there is a perception the darker the guy the better. Wahala for this world

It’s so sad to see elderly women bear the dark scars of bleaching. It takes away from their beauty. 😢I know of a woman that was a deep dark shade, over the summer her complexion was just like Beyoncé’s. Literally stripped her colour away for what?

As much I agree, this mindset has been created by society mainly comes from slave masters who made darker skinned black people feel ugly (made them work in the field) and less than the lighter/ mixed raced who were.made to work in the House and treated bett Society makes it seem the lighter you are, the more beautiful you are even men seem to gravitate more towards light skinned women than darker skinned women This makes women and men feel so insecure trying to see where they fit in hence why people bleach their skin We as a society need to change how we view each other and not make others feel insecure or less because of the shade or colour of their skin

As a sensitive skin girlie, this is the reason I run away from anything "organic". I'd rather use dermatologically tested product. Products with clear ingredients so I read and know what to avoid.

Dimma what you said about the comparison among siblings is so true. Growing up adults used to ask me, a child why i have a dark complexion because by siblings are lightskinned. It made me think there was something wrong with being dark-skinned.

I remember trying rixari skin back then when organic skin care brand was new. I took a picture one day and screamed! I complained to the lady that I was getting lighter, Madam said it was my natural skin color from birth. 😭😭 I was looking so pale! My knuckles? Let me not even talk. They proceeded to market their knuckle product. I immediately stopped but my skin had evident steroid withdrawal, I was so depressed but we thank God because simple mild products for sensitive skin like cera ve reversed it with time. Now I don't even play those games, especially with anything influencers are marketing.

When everyone and their cats started making "organic creams" I desist and resist from anything organic cream. The skin care industry should be highly regulated, but.. I'm light skinned, but I have always wished I'm dark skinned. That's why till tomorrow, I can't understand why people would want to change their skin colour.

Reminds me of the time I tilted towards one particular organic skincare set, two weeks in I saw wonders, little did I know they were just a mix of harsh chemicals mixed in unsanitary and ambiguous amounts, my face and body is just coming back to life three years after, I give God all the glory for saving my skin, since then I said never again!!! I was a victim but in my case organic products were recommended to me for acne . Hmmmmm long story short my face exploded !! Till this day even after cessation my facial skin has not regained it’s normal protective barrier

I agree with everything said here. I watch a Nigerian dating show here on KZfaq where people pop their balloons if they are not interested in a blind date. When people reject the blind date and state their reasons, one of the very common things mentioned when the person is dark-skinned is that they look 'dirty, black, unclean etc'. And they tell people to clean up their skin etc. The language around dark skin in Nigeria is very telling about how people as a society feel about it. As Dimma said, you don't need to be told to your face necessarily, the 'vibe' you get from how you are treated, the comments you hear, the adverts, Nollywood movies etc. It's not. hard to see.

Man oh man…We’re in the year 2023 and our blatant ignorance is still showing. You would think by now, there ought to be more sensitivity surrounding skin color-with a more balanced appreciation for browner hues in Nigeria. We have a long way to go but in the U.S., we are on this wave of inclusivity. You see more of our darker hued sisters in tv ads, billboards, playing more lead roles in movies and music videos; we have songs like “Brown Skin Girl”, etc.

18:22 There's a certain popular Nigerian skincare brand, often promoted by famous influencers, that falls into this category and people eat it up every time. Every time. IYKYK. We have a long way to go with our relationship to bleaching and glorification of certain shades of our skintone. Sha like Dimma said, use brands that are transparent. I have two kids one light skinned and the other dark, im myself am dark skinned. I get adults who tell me to my face that the lighter child is more beautiful then the other. Its really crazy! We really have a long way to go as africans and the standard of beauty that has been set.

It’s awful that these so-called organic skincare products are being sold under the guise of being “all-natural” products when in fact they are mixed with chemicals…and possible bleaching agents. The admiration and/or pursuit of lighter skin complexions in Nigerian society will never die down because it is so ingrained in our consciousness. However, I agree that we have to start recognizing and celebrating the beauty that comes in all shades and hues of brown. Only then will we shed this inferiority complex.

This is an issue! The ingredient list is not transparent on most of these brands and they must be using ingredients above the recommended specifications. How does organic skincare become bleaching skincare in Africa? Is your brand organic?, I want to get lighter. This is a frequently asked question we receive from my African sisters. Ignorance really is the fastest killer in this skincare space. All these kitchen chemists who don't understand anything about chemicals (yes all those so called "organic" ingredients are chemicals) and how to mix or not mix them together. Organic Skincare hmmmmm what can I say. Just one black spot on my face, the auntie said she will make an organic brand for me to clear the black spot and tone my skin to make it one colour. I paid, she shipped from Nigeria. The bath soap, when I bathe I can see my skin shading in the bath: I called to question it. I don’t want to be white, am already light skinned. It stripped my skin. When I stopped using the organic brand, family, problems started. Swelling, boils it was horrible. I have picked up the courage to stop makeup. It’s been 3years am still suffering but there’s improvement. They need to be jailed.
