As someone who’s old enough to be your mother, I feel the need to add a little wisdom and experience from thirty years as a professional cleaner. #1: the wait time for the chemical to do it’s job is called “dwell” time #2: if something doesn’t need chemical dwell time,like glass framed art prints,always spray the cloth,never the glass because the liquid can seep behind and ruin the print. #3: if anyone still has (single sheet)rolled vinyl flooring in their bathroom,entry or kitchen,then the steam mop is PERFECT, because there are no seams. Back in the day, Linoleum and Congoleum were high quality flooring and lasted forever,so some homes may still have them in good condition. #4: a real ostrich feather duster actually works pretty well,you just have to shake them outside. However.the duster that you showed at 3:24,is called an electrostatic duster. If they get really dingy, you can wash them under running water and hang dry,but on a regular basis, you run the hose of your vacuum up and down the fluffy stuff before you dust and it charges it with static electricity. You can actually see the dust jump on to it and hold onto it! Very effective and reusable!

One thing I would like to add is that if you are cleaning a home with dogs and/or cats-vacuum once before your top to bottom clean and then at the end as usual. This really helps with the pet hair that seems to magically reappear after dusting. I also vacuum bathrooms before and after I clean them to pick up the hair that seems to reappear when you are finished.

Respectfully, I have tried to use microfiber for dusting for the past 9+ years, and it absolutely *does* push dust around and leave dust behind. Recently I got tired of being dissatisfied with microfiber’s dusting performance and went *back* to those fluffy swiffer dusters. They work much much better for me. (For almost all other cleaning tasks I LOVE and still use reusable microfiber.)

From Fly Lady: The reason that an ostrich feather duster works is because there are no oils in the feathers. The fine feathers grab the dust and hang onto it. You just brush the feathers back and forth; there is no right or wrong way to use it. When you are finished, you take the duster outside and shake it briskly to get rid of the dust ("Bless the World!") Wash with soap and water from time to time.

OMG - your comment about cluttered homes have the most cleaning supplies was so spot on! I have been recently helping my friend finish cleaning out her family home after her mother passed away last year. Now it was a smaller TOWNHOUSE and the amount of mops-vaccums-dusters was insane! Not to mention we sorted and gave away bags of cleaning supplies to about a dozen people. I think I have enough brand new products from them to last me the next 3 years! And we threw out about the same amount we gave away. and yet, everything was covered in dust or needed a serious wipe down. Buying more products does nothing but CLUTTER up your home if you don't use them!!

I love your videos! My husband and I have cleaned professionally for 39 years. Could I tell you my honest opinion? You were absolutely right when you used the Swiffer! For years we never used it. I thought it was a gimmick. We actually used Murphy’s Oil in a bucket and wiped each surface at our cleaning jobs. (We also used a feather duster.🙁) The houses looked good when we left but got dusty rather quickly. Then we broke down and tried the Swiffer dusters. Amazing! It seems like dirt dust doesn’t land back on it nearly as quickly. We don’t have a lot of money. In fact, we are probably considered poor. (Wages are low in Florida.) But we consider the cost of Swiffers well worth it. So please don’t feel bad that you have recommended them in the past.

Some great tips! The only thing I’m not a fan of - I’m moving completely away from microfiber. I understand why everyone started using it, however after learning so much about microplastics and how bad microfiber is on the environment, I just can’t continue to purchase it. I have switched to more sustainable cotton alternatives. I think society needs to really consider all of the plastics we use and if there are alternatives. Microfiber is an area that there are just easy substitutions available.

You mentioned bleach and ammonia products but I had an experience several years ago that was potentially dangerous, even though I hadn't mixed products. I dumped out the cat's litter box and poured in the bleach, never thinking that a cat's urine has ammonia. With my next breath, I realized what had happened and I grabbed my dog and ran out onto the patio. Luckily, it all turned out okay. But something to be aware of.

@Jyl Romain I learned from Jackson Galaxy that cat litter boxes should not be cleaned with chemicals (so not bleach) and even those that claim to be more “natural” because at the end of the day, it will be harmful to the kitty and it will also cause the kitty to want to avoid the litter box because his/her scent is gone. He calls them “scents soakers” those make them feel safe. So he was saying a good rinsing with hot water and soap is the most you can do to clean them and it’s worked for me. I think the kind of litter you use also makes a huge difference on how the pee can get stuck to the bottom of the box or not. Oh and some litters can make kitties sneeze/have allergies. I didn’t know this until I got a new kitty who was showing allergy symptoms after a couple of days of being in our home. After all the vet testing and what not, we realized it was the litter.

Swiffer duster is a preference, not a "mistake" - to me the product I actually use is the one I'm going with. I don't have the wand, but I have a handheld and the dusters and it works for me. Yes, cloths are more eco friendly, but I'd rather have my home clean than do it perfectly! (Same for paper towels for certain cleaning jobs). Microfibers also create pollution because of the tiny fibres that can't be filtered out in water treatment.

I absolutely hate microfiber cloths 😊 I agree that it is more sensible to use washable cloth to do up high or major surface dusting, but for tiny or delicate items you really can’t beat swiffer. I have a large book collection and also collect small figures and it is PERFECT for that, and a cloth is awful for that. So it really depends on your task

Melissa Maker is great inspiration to get to cleaning. And I hate to say it but for the time being I am sticking with my Swiffer. Somehow that duster gets me to dust better than any cloth, thanks ADHD!

Her reasons for not using the Swiffer were not convincing. I’ve tried nice microfiber cloths and the Swiffer picks up dust better than any microfiber cloth. I hate dusting and will avoid it at all costs unless I use the Swiffer.

@@BbGun-lw5viYes, agree. I find the Swiffer Duster does a better job than microfiber cleaning cloths as well. I do use both depending on the cleaning job. Also, I'm lucky enough to buy the Swiffer cloths at a discounted price with my employee discount.

Also remember that for those of us with allergies and asthma, cleaning a duster by shaking it, is horrible
@denisehenderson4875

I loathe electrostatic dusters. If the dust can be shaken off, what do you think happens when you’re moving it around from one shelf or piece of furniture to the next? Use one in a brightly lit room or where the sunshine is coming through and you’ll see all that dust swirling around. Swiffers are the best for places that don’t need much dusting. I usually use one for light dusting and then save it. Next time I use the same one for heavy dusting and get a fresh one for the light dusting. Yes, the extendable wand is flimsy and intended to break. Someone should come up with a better extendable wand. I’d buy it.

Also I’ve learned that microfiber cloths are full of the tiny plastic micro plastics that I am. Trying to avoid. No more giant bottles of laundry detergent in my house….no electric dish detergent bottles or even the little plastic pods for the doshwasher…I found special ones that are just the powder in a small shape….imagine.

I recently decided to move away from microfiber cloth. Yes, they are reusable, but they are harmful to the environment to make, & they don’t break down the way a natural fiber does (like paper or cotton.) Also-use your squeegee for windows & glass doors-not just the shower! They clean sooo much better (& faster!) than any cloth I’ve tried! Thank you for the drip dry toilet brush tip! Life changer!
