My review of the modern classic, the Orient Kamasu diver. Arguably one of the best deals out there for around 200 USD/EUR. This watch offers great value with an in-house automatic movement, a sapphire crystal, 200 meters of water resistance and a decent bracelet. All of this comes in a nice and compact package which makes the watch great for a smaller wrist, without compromising the wrist presence. HOWEVER, it's not all positives for this watch. Stay tuned towards the end of the video to hear my issues with the Kamasu. (Or skip right to that part)

Great review. Was looking forward to it. My personal Orient Diver history started with the Mako II, Kamasu black and end up with the green version of the Kamasu. In summer the green looks really like green and is very special and in winter time it nearly looks like a black so even more versatility. Beside the pros you have mentioned I fully agree about, I think it is the most elegant Orient Diver although the dial/bezel has maybe too much markers on it. I think it is the overall design mixed with the case size that makes it more elegant for me. I kind of compare the design to the first generation of Longines HydroConquest. Although both watches are very much different the 39mm HydroConquest is overloaded on dial / bezel as well but still looks so elegant. On the crownguards I believe that Orient wanted to keep this elegant design by adding this thinner crownguards, but I agree that this could be solved much better. On the caseback I totally agree, very boring caseback. On the crown itself, I believe that it is a technique used here that makes the crown moving around in the open position. If you look closely the crown loses the safety of the crownguards if you open it up and the non tight action of the crown provides again a little bit more security by moving around. Otherwise it would be too stable and risk on break would be higher. Other companies like Vostok also use this technique. The bracelet is ok but as you said there is enough room for upgrades maybe get a better bracelet.

Thank you! Sounds like you've had your fair share of Orient divers :D Very good points and insight on the Kamasu. The green one looks great. I kind of want that one instead of this black one haha! Interesting what you said about the crown! So that means that it is intentional.. I did not know that. Thank you for educating me on that.

Hi. Great balanced review, i just saw the crown issue you mentioned in another review, so it seems a common problem. I totally agree on the noisy dial, that's why i opted for the Ra-ac0k.

Thank you! I later found out that the wobbly crown is intentional. It is some sort of protection mechanism which is used in many watches (including the vostok amphibian, so it’s not really a fault). The indexes are a little aggressive, the new ones that have round indexes look stunning!👌🏻

Nice and thorough review. Thank you. I have owned both this and the Ray 2. Considering the $200 price tag, I haven’t been able to find a new watch yet (other than Allie Express brands) that can beat the specs of this watch. If you want a solid and respectfully done daily diver with sapphire for an affordable price, this is still it. I think buying one if these slightly used on a Strapcode bracelet is the way to go. I see them for around $175 in great shape on a Strapcode all the time.
@NordicWatchChannel
@NordicWatchChannel 2 жыл бұрын
There really isn't much out there to challenge this.. It's the sapphire that sets the Kamasu apart from the rest of brands that have some sort of heritage. As you mentioned there are the homage watches etc. but I don't consider those comparable. Who knows what kind of working conditions those watches are made in.
@NordicWatchChannel

Then if you can consider watches without sapphire, it's a whole other game. Lots of contenders in that category, but not with sapphire.

Thanks for sharing mate! Congrats on the purchase! Way to go finding a DIY fix for that :D That's one upside with wearing the same watch a longer period of time, you get to notice how it runs and fiddle with that. I rotate the watches in my collection so frequently that they always run out of juice before I notice any problems with timekeeping. :)

@NordicWatchChannel 3 жыл бұрын
Specwise this is true for sure. I haven’t seen one live so I can’t say that much about it. I will say that because of the ”nature” of the watch (a upgraded skx) it’s kind of impersonal to me. Kind of lacking personality like a homage watch (invicta pro diver or something). That being said I think it’s a great idea by Marc and I love the guy! Hopefully the Islander will have a long and rich heritage from now on😎

Finally got one (the same with black dial, RA-AA0001B). The native bracelet makes it too heavy for me but I already had a 22mm quick-release steel mesh strap lying around, so no problem (in fact, I've been converting all my collection to either NATO straps or mesh bracelets, with some very few exceptions where the native straps/bracelets are fully integrated). I like how this model, instead of trying to look like a Rolex, really offers something better. Also, my item does not have any issues with wobbly crown, so I guess they had fixed this in the later batches. And, unlike e.g. Invicta 8926OB, the lume and especially the bezel action is a pure joy here. Starting the accuracy measurement but I'm sure the deviation won't be high even in 24/7 wearing mode. Now, to the negatives you mentioned. As for the caseback, i don't know, I like when a particular model has a bit of its own personality instead of a generic brand logo slapped onto this caseback. As for crown guards, they are called "crown guards" for a reason. If the crown stands out too much, what are they guarding then? As for the potential dial overload, I don't think so. Bezel markers are always auxiliary but necessary as a functional element. If there's anything that makes this watch "too sporty", it's its thickness. But again, changing bracelets just rocks in this situation. As for the dial-side logo, it's perfectly fine as of now, you should have seen the mess they had in the pre-Epson era when the ORIENT text was also glued on. As for the date/day wheel, here I finally agree, ideally it should have been white-on-black, but that's not something that Epson/Orient is ready to do for their non-Star models with their current production cycle. Because they won't do white-on-crimson on the red model, white-on-blue on the blue model and so on. At least for this price. I can elaborate why if you're interested.
@NordicWatchChannel
@NordicWatchChannel 9 ай бұрын
Thank you for the insights! Very valid points, which also highlight the fact that a lot of these things are just a matter of preferences! Spec-wise a very solid watch for the money, there's no denying that. I agree that Orient divers are a bit bulky with the 22mm bracelets and a strap/bracelet change can do a lot of good!
@amoledzeppelin
@amoledzeppelin 9 ай бұрын
@@NordicWatchChannel So, I had measured the initial accuracy - it settled on about +8.5 spd, which I didn't quite like, so regulated it myself with the help of a software timegrapher on Android ("Watch Accuracy Meter"). The F6922 itself is very stable and doesn't have much positional deviation, so it was worth giving a shot. The trick was to get the grapher display about +5 spd in the "dial down" position. Really takes some micrometric precision. After this regulation, the accuracy settled to under +1 spd in my 24/7 wearing mode. Not only is this within COSC and Rolex standards for mechs, but also well within mass-produced quartz watch allowance (+/-30 seconds per month). Now I'm very interested what deviation it's going to have at the end of October. If it is under +24 s/mo, I'll officially declare that I found a mech more accurate than one of my electronic Casios (W-800H which cannot be regulated in any way).
@NordicWatchChannel
@NordicWatchChannel 9 ай бұрын
I await eagerly to hear your report on it! Sounds like some great accuracy. The movement itself should be good. It’s a bummer that watch companies have not yet found a cheap way to mass-regulate their entry level watches to such accuracy😂 The movements cleary can do better!
@amoledzeppelin
@amoledzeppelin 9 ай бұрын
@@NordicWatchChannel So far, +6 seconds in 8 days, meaning +0.75 spd. Not bad at all, there is a viable chance to get under +24 s/mo. I'll keep you updated. As for the mass regulation, yes, the main problem is the process takes time they don't have at automated production lines (I imagine there is an adjusting robot with a basic built-in timegrapher), but I wish they at least included micrometric screws for the rate levers, this would allow to adjust it more precisely. Nevertheless, the mere possibility to do this at home and get stable results (as opposed to having to go to an authorized service center like in case with Rolexes/Tudors/etc) is something that only people who live outside the "first world" can fully appreciate. Greetings from Ukraine.

Mine came with a defective bezel spring that broke after a month of use, and as far as i am aware its not possible to service a orient watch in Europe. It was a cheap fix as the skx bezel spring is the same as the one on the kamasu. Also the lume looks more yellow in person than it does in videos. But still a great watch if you like the style

Bummer! I’m really surprised to hear that you can’t service a Orient in Europe, are you sure? I’m not sure but I would imagine you could take it back to the AD. The lume is sometimes difficult to catch naturally on film and the color on video might sometimes differ from the live color.
