In the Winter of 1989, I was a 26 year old man visiting family in Lahore, Pakistan. While there, I was invited to the wedding of Wasim Akram's brother. I remember it was a typical, misty winter night in Lahore. The wedding was being held on some grounds in Model Town, Lahore in a beautiful tent setup. The whole wedding party was abuzz with the fact that the Pakistan Cricket team would be attending this matrimonial. While the team had not won the World Cup yet, the star power of Imran Khan, Wasim Akram, Waqar Younis, et. al., was evident even to an American like me. Little did I know that the celebrity of the cricketers in attendance was about to be overshadowed. I was told by my cousins that the musical entertainment for the evening would be a qawwal named Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. I had never heard of him. I barely had heard of qawwali as an art form. When Khan sahib walked into the tent where he was to perform, I was taken aback. He was shy in his presentation and almost aloof to the burgeoning adoration that he was receiving. I had no idea what to expect. For reasons that I do not know, Khan sahib that night did away with the typical etiquette of qawwali (beginning with a Hamd, then a Naat, and so forth) and instead launched directly into "Je tu rab nu manana pehle yaar nu". It was electric! It was desi jazz and rock n' roll and Sufiana kalam all rolled into one. NFAK's improvisations, the rhythms of Dildar Hussain, the angelic voice of Farrukh Fateh Ali Khan as the perfect complement to NFAK's raw, brilliant domination; it was all so magical and so overwhelming. That night, for me, my love for qawwali could be described by the very lyrics of this qawwali: "Aankh Uthi Mohabbat Ne Angdaai Li Dil Ka Sauda Hua Chandni Raat Mein Ho Teri Nazaron Ne Kuch Aisa Jaadu Kiya Lut Gaye Hum Toh Pehli Mulaqaat Mein"
