Women in Buddhism:
The story of how Buddha allowed women to enter the Buddhist monastic order begins with the Buddha's stepmother, Mahaprajapati Gautami. After the death of Queen Mahamaya , her elder sister, Gautami raised young prince Siddhartha, who would later become the Buddha.
Years later, after the Buddha had achieved enlightenment and begun teaching the dhamma, he arrived in Kapilvastu and was dwelling in Nigrodha’s Park. Gautami went to him and after paying her respects requested to become a nun and follow the Buddha's teachings. Many other women from Kapilvastu also begged him to be allowed entry into the monastic order as ordained nuns.
