Many wars have been waged throughout the history of the Dune Universe. But the most influential of these wars was without a doubt the Butlerian Jihad. A War which would ultimately leave humankind free from their machine-empowered oppressors, but also plunge mankind into a dark age in which all interplanetary travel was either too slow to be considered practical or extraordinary perilous.
Generations of humankind endured the Butlerian Jihad. The Great revolt lasted from 200 BG to 108 BG.

I think good old Frank had the right idea by talking around the Jihad in generalities, keeping it vague. When each of us read _Dune,_ assuming we were going into it more or less fresh and without much knowledge of either of the dueling EUs, we each came up with our own idea of what the Jihad involved based on those few clues. I didn’t give it a great deal of thought at the time-it was so peripheral to the story-but I think I assumed it was a vaguely Matrix-like fight to the death against robots. But there are other directions in which to take it, many far more interesting than that. I think broad strokes of backstory like this are usually best left to each fan’s imagination. When someone gets around to writing a detailed “definitive” version of the event, it rarely compares to what we’d each imagined.

I have a different perspective as I read the entire series in chronological order starting with the Butlerian Jihad, and really love the machine wars and how it led to the era of the complete ban on machine intelligence.

aperson22222 the differing writing styles became obvious, if I recall my impressions rightly the Brian Herbert/JIA stuff was more gratuitous sci-fi while the Frank Herbert books come off more sci-fantasy. I suspect my own preferences forAI stories made me more interested in the machine conflict than the seemingly never ending intrigues of the Bene Gesserit for example, but nothing too controversial in my conclusion, the original Dune is the jewel (or is that spice?) in the crown.

@@skipintroux4098 Interesting how the Butlerian Jihad contrasted with Muad'dib's Jihad during the Golden Path. It seemed that in the former, humans had laudable goals and it was like an intifada,a shaking off of machine hegemony while Paul's war was a culling of himanity in order to fit on theGolden Path. The scope of this whole series is fantastic.

That's to bad you feel that. Brian Herbert's books are what got me into Dune as they're an easier read with more action. I think it's to bad so many people are hostile towards their vision when its likely their books get people interested in Dune. Just be glad they've tried to continue the story rather then letting it die with Frank.
@TheJohno95

@@isaacgriffin5690 It annoys me how many people consider that Dune Encyclopedia canon and hate on Brian and Kevin's work. Frank didn't write the Encyclopedia and said himself that it wasn't canon. He respected their work, but didn't accept it into his own canon. But, you can't change these purists minds. They'll go their entire life hating Brian and Kevin's awesome work for the sake of purity. They remind of some of those Butlerian cultists from that last trilogy. And they'll never know what I mean by that.
@elizabethw7756
@elizabethw7756 4 жыл бұрын
Brian and Kevin's writing style will never come close to Franks. I doubt if they got anyone to write more stories in the dune universe it wouldn't even come close. I have to say i prefer Franks writing. I've read all but the last book they put out, which I'll probably read b/c it has the dune name attached. I like most of their stuff, but a bunch just doesn't fit with what's in the original books. Whether or not they've been faithful to the notes Frank left, we'll never really know. I've never read the encyclopedia, hope to though so I can't really comment on that

Such a drastic change in format, when compared to your "Ultimate Guide to Dune" series! The Covid struggle may shackle your ability to produce content similar to those works of art. Or, maybe "The Algorithm" AKA the ethereal entity that motivates KZfaq content, favors these shorter videos. Regardless, I love it, as always. I can't wait to see where you go. I've a few books to read before I go into the Dune "extended universe," so I'm metaphorically *lusting* for any morsel of information regarding this aspect of the "canon" timeline. It helps that you've clearly proven yourself to be a superfan, yet also astute enough to grasp some of the deeper themes inherent in the series.

Just some thoughts about the similarities... - Zhat Vash vs Quwat Milat is starting to look like Bene Gesserit vs Honored Matres (both female based secretive and powerful), and of course the crusade against synths like the Butlerian Jihad... bane of the old civilization and a new impending doom because they did survive somewhere in the universe, - Dahj/Soji/Jona may be a construct like Duncan Idaho Gholas. They could have their pre-ghola memories reawakened by forcing to experience some kind of psychological trauma (like activating Dahr in ep 1 or later Soji at assassination attempt), or... by sexual imprinting techniques (what Narek was trying to do), - Using doctor Yueh to kill Atreides in Dune and using Dr. Jurati to kill Maddox, - Hugh was killed by a needle dart like a Gom Jabbar, - the scene where exBorgs almost rip apart Narissa looked like the death of Beast Raban, - blue search-eyes on holo-Rioses like spice-eyes of Fremen...

I don’t think the name Butler can be a coincidence. It’s a must read.

4:45sec Looks like a Genesis StarLiner from the game Star Citizen. Good choice, it fits right in there. Does anyone else play SC? Maybe one day it's space will be as vast as Dune.

I love frank Herbert His work is immortal and unmatched by all but the most celebrated of sci-fi writers of all time if that But this half fleshed our version of the machine crusade doesn’t flow as well as the version his son compiled from his notes and polished by Brian Anderson Not a popular view amping those who know the series as eruditely as Quinn but that’s where I stand Btw read the whole series multiple times Read all of the expanded universe material except for the three House books Tried but the first book never hooked me Cheers

I always thought this war was against the thinking machines was more like a war against the Terminators or Men of Iron in 40k.I'm a 40k fan and I know that a lot of it was strongly influenced by Dune. I always feel like Dune is 40Ks backstory in a lot of ways 😅

I think Frank Herbert implies it to be like humans fighting against humans who use thinking machines.
