ORIGINAL Star Wars Hoth Battle Scene (1980) - 16mm Film Preservation
This is the original Hoth Battle scene from The Empire Strikes Back as seen in the original release. This clip came from Puggo Strikes Back, a 16mm print of the film. It was scanned and then uploaded to archive.org by a user named Puggo. You can watch this version for yourself here: archive.org/details/ESB16mm
For those not aware, better versions of the Theatrical Releases exist and I talk about them in my video here: • A Brief Review of all ...
I do not own the rights to or to distribute Star Wars. That ability belongs to the Disney Corporation. This video is purely for preservation purposes. The music in this video belongs to John Williams, and therefore Disney.

There is something really nice about seeing this old film format. The colors and the grain, something about it just is comforting. We're so used to seeing everything in crystal clear quality it's gotten almost unrealistic, if that makes sense.

The scene at 4.08 showing 3 AT-AT walkers with rebels running away from them is pure cinematic gold. One cannot quite believe you are watching something that was made well over 40 years ago and it looks as good now as it did upon first release. Back in the day this scene (and others) must have been mind blowing. Hats off to the special effects team for bringing these films to life.

Those imperial walkers scared the hell outta me when I first saw them on the screen over 40 yrs ago. I calmed down a bit when I realised they weren't living things but we're "driven" by the empire 😂
@Mr12Relic
@Mr12Relic 7 ай бұрын
@@YortOK Everybody complains about AT-ATs being slow and inefficient compared to an orbital strike. The psychological factor is so immense. Their design was based on Paraceratherium, a huge extinct hornless rhinoceros. War elephants were used throughout antiquity for travel efficiency (especially over difficult terrain) and to instill fear, prior to the invention of tanks. Given the Rebels' trenched position resembling WWI, this scene blends the ideas of animal and machine into a twisted monstrosity.

It makes you really appreciate how much talent and skill it took to make this back in the day. When I work on low budget stuff I see even films made on 50k having CGI that looks realistic, but back then, this was a monumental technical achievement that involved a huge number of industry leaders trying to do things that had hardly ever been done before

The cinematography in the first theatrical release prints episodes IV, V, and VI convey a soft grain "dreamy" quality that imbues the "Once Upon A Time" updated prologue: A Long Time Ago, In a Galaxy Far, Far, Away. I love this shot at 4:08. At this point the troopers have been routed and thus they retreat. You see ominous creatures of destruction looming over them with the destruction they've already caused billowing behind them in ash and smoke. There's just so much frantic chaos here. It captured the desperation of this conflict quite nicely imo, and it's one of the scenes in OT that really puts the WAR in Star Wars.

Star Wars is a fiction of course, but this is probably one of the most "realistic" battle scenes of the worlds cinema. The icy fog, the giant armoured walking fortresses, symbolic for industrial and military power, the fact, that you cannot "screw" the Empire without to be striked by its full force, all this contributes to this realism.

I know it has the grain effect as it is the original print but why does the colour look better? Some shots of the AT-ATs actually feel more real without digital remastering where they brighten and colour everything Having them be cast in shadow makes them look more menacing, if you look at the footage from 4:58 and compare it to the digital remasters it’s looks so much better to me. There is something strange at 5:11 when the shield generator explodes... When I watched this movie back in the 1990s at home (on a video tape), I clearly reminded that there was no blinding flash at all, and the scene was very briefly in slow motion. Later, when the film was restored in the 2000s, I noticed that the blinding flash was added, manifestly in an effort to "hide" the temporarily slow motion. Since the present footage is from the original 1980 movie, why is there the blinding flash at 5:11 ?? I am really confused...
