One of the great opening scenes of all time. When Vader stepped into the scene the hair on the back of my neck stood up.

My sister would always do this really good impression of Aunt Beru saying, "I think so!" but watching it again when the special editions came out, it sounded nothing like that, but now I realise we must have watched the 1977 mono mix! My sister will be so pleased when I tell her, for sure! But awesome video, thank you!

That's interesting. Many things that are presented by many as additions and/or changes for the Special Edition come from the original theatrical version. C-3PO's line about the tractor beam having 7 terminals and "Close the blast doors!" were all there from the very beginning, only in a different sound mix. Huh, who knew? I didn't.

It's SOOOOOO much better this way. Even though the expression on Vader's helmet doesn't change at all, we can tell how he's feeling and thinking by the way he tilts his head and how he looks at the Emperor, then at Luke, then back at the Emperor. Him saying "No" just tells us that he doesn't want the Emperor to kill his son, but it's much more complex than that. When he doesn't speak at all, it tells us exactly what Vader is thinking. What Vader is thinking is "You lied to me about how turning to the dark side will save my wife, you have turned me into this horrible person, and are you really going to do to my son what you've done to me? I DON'T THINK SO!!!"

How is it that much more emotional without dialogue! Vaders act of defiance agaist the emporer seems so much more urgent and desperate, it resolves his contemplation so much better everything in the performance already says "no"

This looks so much better than the weird edited shot they put to show the projectile. Peojectile? Bullet? Laser? Blast?

Note it doesn't say 'Episode IV" for anything like that. That's because this was the first film and no-one knew it was going to become a series needing numbering.

All of the other changes in the Original Trilogy, I can vouch for and I do agree with the improvements that George made, to make various scenes come to life/make sense/stand out. etc. But one decision that I don’t agree with George on, like a lot of other people.. Was the adding of the “nooo… Nooooooooo!” line in. It actually kinda’ ruins the scene and the impact of Anakin’s thoughts beneath the mask/helmet. Again, like a lot of other people have said; “Less is more”, in this case. It hits FAR harder (especially with John Williams’ music in the background) when Anakin’s response/actions were done spontaneously and suddenly. With the added-in dialogue, you just know Anakin/Vader is going to do something. I’ll be honest in saying that I’m pleased I grew up with the original version and the version from the mid to late 90’s over the more latter versions, where this was included in the cut.

Ah that newly minted Dolby Stereo Sound.....nothing prepared you for the experience in 1977, the opening scene itself was worth waiting in line for. And thank George Lucas for bringing back the original Fox Fanfare.

There is a sequel to this scene. In the current version, there is a conversation between the father and son after they carry Palpatine to the boarding gate of the spaceship, but in the old VHS, there was a scene where they take off their masks and talk after throwing Palpatine away, but I think that was deleted.🐥

This original will always be the best version of Starwars. Vader didn't need to say "No" because the emotional language was in his actions.

That lightning looks so much more frightening and real. When you look at how dim and fake it looks in the special editions and the blurays, one just has to wonder, were they blind at how bad it looked when you smooth out the picture entirely?

Non-verbal communication and acting is FAR more effective and satisfying than saying words....Like Arnold Schwarzenegger in the Terminator (he should've at least have been nominated for an OSCAR for his BRILLIANT performance...screw his accent.....he says ten things in the movie yet he was TERRIFYING) just like this scene with Prowse.....Such a beautiful example of acting.....I might sound weird but that is the truth...oh...I should add......Ian deserved every single award for every single Star Wars movies ever....the guy WAS SW....

Since I was born in 1977 I can only imagine what it must have been like to see this on the big screen not knowing what you were in for. The only comparison I can think of is when the city destroyer in Independence Day appears above New York and instills you with a feeling of awe and dread at the same time, that's what Star Wars must have felt like back then.

Growing up in a small Northern town at the end of the railroad we didn’t have a theatre. There was this man who used to show movies in our school gymnasium. Star Wars was never shown in Moosonee Ontario, Canada. But I remember one of my six older brothers brought home a copy of Starlog Magazine. That’s where I first saw pictures of the movie at 5 years old. I had to wait until I was 10 when it would finally be released on VHS in 1982. Now I’m 52 years old with a 2 year old granddaughter who loves Star Wars. We had the movie on one day and she couldn’t take her eyes off it. I created a Star Wars nerd 🤓

This is the true ending of Star Wars. This is the moment Anakin Skywalker finally broke free of the dark side. He finally saw what it was worth. He was not going to let the very last thing of his old life be destroyed by the very thing he let trick him into becoming a slave to the dark side. Anakin Skywalker destroyed the Sith once and for all and brought the Force back into balance. This is where Star Wars ends.
