Finally got a box of original 1918 dated .45 ACP ammunition still in half-moon clips in the box! although the box is in rough shape I've been wanting a box of this for a while.

Are those cupro-nickel jacketed? US signed the 1807 Hague convention "treaty” that restricted bullets that would " easily flatten in the body” causing greater tissue damage. It’s funny because anyone knows that a solid lead , unjacketed .45 traveling at 800 fps isn’t going to expand anyway... cool find. I always wanted a S and W 1917.

So, not being an expert myself I tried to do some research and a few people are saying the same thing. As apposed to them being Cupronickel: "They do look like they are, but they are actually regular copper jacketed bullets that are "tinned", a very different thing. It's a thin tin coating, more of a chemical wash than a plating. This was a fairly standard thing for a lot of pistol ammo around that time. If they've been handled much it's common to see it rubbed off"

Thanks man! I'm just a novice that has a love for WWI/WWII History and weaponry and trying to learn as I collect and share with people who dig the same kind of stuff! I appreciate the sub!

Very cool! I think I'd be tempted to pull a couple of those clips since the box has cracked open anyways, remove the ammunition to keep with the box, and run the clips with modern .45 Auto in your M1917. No more pluckin' them cartridges with fingernails! Haha!

he could just buy after market full clips thats what i did anyways

@@brysonandrus9061 True. I've never messed with a S&W 1917 as I have much more love for Russian firearms than anything and have geared my meager collection towards such, with the occasional dabbling into other countries. Oftentimes, you'll find that modern reproduction clips are nowhere near as smooth as original clips. I imagine it's not as much of a hassle when considering moon clips, but stripper clips especially. I have a love for trying to reuse original equipment on old firearm whenever it's possible. Such as slings, clips, muzzle covers, etc.

@@rodgersmith1573 maaaan I don't think I could! I've wanted an actual full box of WWI rounds in clips for so long! I already have an unopened box of 1918 dated rounds in the box that didn't come in clips. I'll definitely get new production ones at some point and try them out

@@bilgeratmilitaria Yeeeah, that's understandable. It's just the way I am. To me, it's like, "This isn't a pristine, sealed box of cartridges. I could utilize these original clips any time I intend to shoot this revolver, which will work the absolute best for my firearm, and I could return them at any time to the box with their original cartridges.". That's just my train of thought, and I totally get that not everybody is comfortable doing so. And, who knows? Maybe there is no difference to be had between original and reproduction moon clips? I'm just used to running stripper clips. For example, there is no comparison between an original stripper clip and modern reproductions for the Mosin-Nagant/SVT-38/SVT-40/AVT-40.

Completely understand! I just can't bring myself to take them off. If I ever track down some more maybe not in a box I'll feel better trying it. Or maybe event shooting some of the original ammo! Maybe 🤣. Not using them isn't the end of the world, but it would be nice to just drop them in and out. I just finished editing a little video about my relic PPSH-41... I'll drop it pretty soon... hopefully you don't roast me too bad about it 🤣
