Im one of those wierd people who has literally put years into hobbies most people havent heard of. From the big ones to the obscure. I got into fly fishing a few weeks ago and I gotta say as someone who is an older man who really hasnt fished AT ALL since I was a child...... This is one the most challenging things to get into starting from absolute zero gear of any kind and zero knowledge of any kind of fishing let alone fly. Ive never done anything in my life that I couldnt get down in a couple weeks but I feel like im no further along after 2500 dollars in gear and waders and months of research. Once I get to the river I just cant seem to get a fish. I wont give up and honestly im happy its not easy cause if it was it wouldnt be rewarding. But man if you arent a fisherman and you jump into fly fishing off the bat? Get ready for some of the hardest learning you will ever do. I think the issue is 99.9% of people assume you have fished so when i ask people for help they talk in riddles about things I dont know. Give me a year Ill have it.

I’ve been casting a fly rod since 1978 but sometimes I like to watch these videos just for fun. This is a pretty good one keep up the good work.

Very good casting lesson! I started on the banks of the Kennebunk river in the 80's, standing on the banked shale casting into the river for stripers. When I finally got a hit, I immediately lost it because I had already broken off the hook on the shale behind me back casting. The first striper I ever caught involved my fly line straight down from the rod tip in the river...no cast at all!! I was probably trying to sort out my fly line wrapped around my hand when the striper took my fly. Stripers are the single best starter species ever! Since then I have fished everywhere salt and fresh, Colorado, Montana, Bahamas, Caymans, Florida. My favorite rod is the Orvis Clearwater 6 wgt..great for small stripers, bonefish and trout. The single most exciting fish I have ever hooked up are baby tarpon on a 9 wgt..wish I had landed any of the three I hooked up! Have fun, tight lines!

I'm brand new to this - I've only tried it on the water once so far - but this is the best description I've been able to find.

To avoid hitting the ground on the back cast there are a couple of things you should focus on. The first is to make sure you starting with your rod tip close to if not on the water’s surface. Make a smooth acceleration to an abrupt stop in a “up and back position” on your back cast. I have seen and been guilty of lifting the rod at one speed then trying to make an overly aggressive “flick” which usually ends up in a “down and back position” resulting in the line hitting the ground on the back cast. The second thing I look for Is… I watch my back cast when I practice. Open your stance a little when you practice (if your right handed drop your right foot back) so you can see you rod tip stop and watch you line roll out just before you leader turns over begin your forward cast. While your fishing it’s not a bad to watch your back cast from time to time with the exception of casting at moving fish. I hope this helps, Pete

for me honestly this breakdown is awesome...most of my casting is intuitive and it is hard to break it down for beginners, but this vid actually helped me to anylize some of my casting faux oaus and to educate anglers that couldn't learn by me just sayin...hey yall watch this...good vid

Dear Pete, not only am I a very happy Orvis customer but am the Director of Instruction for our fly fishing club in SE NC. When I work with those new to fly fishing, new to saltwater fly fishing or those wishing to improve their casting, I always suggest they look at every video you have done. Not only do you do a good job explaining a particular aspect of fly fishing but your whole demeanor is that of a man at ease with his equipment. You make it look so easy, which is exactly what I try to encourage them to copy. My line is, “The hardest thing about fly casting is remembering how easy it is.” You are an excellent example of the key to fly fishing- letting the rod and line do 95% of the work. Brilliant, I have been fly fishing on and off for 50 years but have problems with the tiny pause with the back swing. You are brilliant sir. I will practice tomorrow. I have caught several trout but my casting has been ….. well ….problematic. Great video. Kind regards Ken. (Rutland , England).

Amazingly Great fish for first time. I was told to keep my cast between 10am and noon or 10am and 2pm. Helps keep the fly line from hitting the ground

I love fly fishing. But there are so many people I know who are interested but never and up getting involved because they don't want to deal with the frustrations of learning how to cast, and tie knots etc. etc. They don't know what they're missing!

I'm new at fly fishing too, but if you only have a spinning rod you might try bombarda floats. It's a way of using flies with a spinning rod and reel.

using a fluorescent fly line like in the video is good to see how the fly line moves when your learning casts

hi am going to try to target carp on a fly rod but being new to fly fishing i can only get about 10 yards out i have some trees usually at either side of the swims that i class suitable for fly fishing what do you suggest i have a 9/5ft, 8 weight rod with floating line and alloy spool

When fishing from a river bank on dry land. Casting straight out into the river and the fly has landed, the river takes your fly down river, say to the far left and now you want to lift and cast straight out in front again. Do you have to pull all your line back in or can you lift, change direction in air and cast out again back in front of you instead of the side from where you lifted.

so im having a problem where my leader and fly line meet up, it keeps getting snagged on the last hole of my rod, do I need to have a longer leader?

I am a beginner not novice. I have practiced for about 2hrs total. I just purchased Orvis Hydros iv on a TFO BVK 9' 8 wt rod with 8wt S.Anglers redfish warm line. I have a fairly nice loop and cast at about 55'. However, my leader (9') falls to the ground like a streamer of ribbon. Practicing with yarn...and it just flutters down. Is this normal? Should I be concerned with just the line rolling out nicely or both the line and leader even though I am not casting even (flyweight)? If this is wrong, how might I correct.?I guess I should say that I have fished with spin casting rigs for 40 years. 55yrs old. I do understand rod loading and some fly technique. So I am not new to all the dynamics. Suggestions by anyone please.

*i bought the 9'6" 5wt rod honestly this rod performs just as well costing under 1/2 the amount. it has a nice Fast action, and throws the line well even with larger fly's (wooly buggers, small poppers, etc.). if your looking for a lower price fly rod that works well thi is it.*
