Sony basically forced them to since they thought Crash was too aggressive looking for the Japanese market. The Crash 4 redesign was the same in all regions though.

I wish I could buy this for my PS1/PS2, but I don't think it would work because I have a PAL version, the Japanese game is probably NTSC.

It would not work unless you have a modded PAL or NTSC PS1/PS2. Japanese version is a NTSC-J format so you would need a console within that region code, I myself use a NTSC-J PS2 to play all of my japanese games :P

Atleast the same tune is heard in Crash 1 (during the SCE/UIS/ND logos / title scteen) whereas the in-game versions appeared from 1997-2000 (as The Wrath of Cortex used the original arrangement in the Japanese version though it used the Warp Room theme in the Western versions)
