Otis Redding

6 жыл бұрын

When "(Sittin' On) The Dock of the Bay" was released in January of 1968, it heralded a change in direction for the King of Soul (TM), Otis Redding. Sadly, it was released posthumously, as Otis perished in a plane crash on December 10, 1967. 50 years on, we celebrate all that Otis achieved with this unforgettable tune. This new video hints at the references made throughout the song as Otis considered where he came from and where he was going - and what he wanted to do with his life as he wrote it. Sit back, relax, and enjoy.

Lyrics:
Sittin' in the mornin' sun
I'll be sittin' when the evenin' comes
Watchin' the ships roll in
Then I watch 'em roll away again
I'm sittin' on the dock of the bay
Watchin' the tide, roll away
I'm sittin' on the dock of the bay
Wastin' time
I left my home in Georgia
And I headed for the Frisco Bay
'Cause I've got nothin' to live for
Looks like nothin's gonna come my way, so
I'm just come sittin' on the dock of the bay
Watchin' the tide roll away
I'm sittin' on the dock of the bay, wastin' time
Looks like nothin's gonna change
Everything seems to stay the same
I can't do what ten people tell me to do
So I guess I'll remain the same
I'm sittin' here restin' my bones
And this loneliness won't leave me alone
This two thousand miles I roamed
Just to make this dock my home
Now I'm just sittin' on the dock of the bay
Watchin' the tide roll away
Sittin' on the dock of the bay
I'm wastin' time
Songwriters: Otis Redding / Steve Cropper

Welcome to the official KZfaq channel of the King of Soul - Otis Redding. As one of the most influential and powerful singers of the 1960’s, his songs “Sittin on the Dock of the Bay,” “Try a Little Tenderness," “Hard to Handle,” and albums ‘Pain in My Heart,’ ‘Otis Blue’ and ‘Tell the Truth’ are beloved across generations and remain classics to this day.
Born in Georgia, Redding began his career at a young age in school choirs and bands and developed his raw and expressive voice. Redding signed with Volt Records in 1962 after they heard his rendition of “These Arms of Mine” during a recording session with Johnny Jenkins. Over the next few years, Redding released a string of hits, became a tireless live performer, and honed his songwriting abilities before his 1967 death in an unexpected plane crash. Redding became even more famous after his death with the release of his most popular track to date, “(Sittin’ On) The Dock of the Bay” and his legacy as the King of Soul lives on.

@Seven Inches of Throbbing Pink Jesus A long time ago I decided to get to understand why although I'm not intelligent. But the subjects I'd like to know as much as possible do have my interest completely. But I think this is a normal human thing at a certain human degree. And the fact that some individuals never have been to a university doesn't mean automatically that they can't understand something. Maybe it can take a longer ×-time than a student who had a lot of A's at high school before entering a university, but in my opinion it's not that normal as it seems to be. But in my case I like to learn. And often until late at night due to the interesting or less interesting facts conserning a subject. Maybe this is my way to deal with my kind of happyness which I can only find in studying. And maybe this is the reason why I've never been in love with a woman. To complicated in relation to a woman and my love for studying.

Otis was a relatively unheralded genius ! He was already worthy of the hall of fame, when this song was released posthumously.

@@myron8005 It makes me sad to hear that Jack. I hope the future holds only luck and joy for you. Maybe you should interpret the lyrics different. You can't do what 10 people tell you to do because you are what you are and you should accept that, just as society should. Keep the same Jack. Love.

JackTheH as a similarly minded person, don’t worry about where or when you’re born, focus on who you are now and make the best of the moments in the present over dwelling on moments in the past. Always keep your eyes towards the future and only worry about the things that you can control.

I lost my Dad in '91, my Mom in '09 and my only child in '13. If it wasn't for music, I'd be running around the street at night wearing nothing but black. I'm so very sorry for your loss but I'm truly happy you have music to help you keeping a grasp. You may not always know it, but there are people that need you to still be with them. I never actually thought that myself, until I stepped back for a bit and the world of what loved ones I had left started to become ugly. So, despite your pain, be there for the ones who even remotely need you, we rarely realize how important we can be. I know I didn't. It cost me a career, but it didn't cost me my friends.

This is such a Legendary Song !! It's amazing that Otis was right there with his fantastic contributions to the Mid 60's Soul Era !! Thanks to Steve Cropper for writing and producing this song. He had a feel like no other artist. This song still sounds great at my live gigs. (pre Covid) .. and it works well on the Cruise Ship gigs as well. My Students love to learn and play this song. If you need it transposed into a different key to make it easier to sing, i can help you with that as well. Gotta Love the Classics. ;-)

Otis Redding broke the color barrier just as Chuck Berry did and the real Godfather of soul, Wilson Pickett. The only performer who is black besides these three that were accepted, were Cab Calloway and Louis Armstrong.
