Oulton Park Crashes & Highlights, BRSCC & TCR UK, 8/6/24

Messy would be an understatement! I've not been to Oulton Park in a number of years due to the incredible downtime between races to fix the place and the loss of track time just generally being a bit frustrating to sit through. Not much has changed in that time. Apologies for the less than amazing camera work, I was doing my best Dave Jackson impression for the day and doing this one was all a bit last minute really. This was a particularly crash filled event, much like the last BRSCC event I saw. And then couple it with a tight schedule up against a tight curfew, new gravel traps costing more time and a whole host of series that seemed to struggle to get beyond 1 lap. Oulton really does look like it struggles with the size of cars these days and the mess that is made of the walls every time something so much as looks at it, is quite strange. You don't get this sort of downtime at a lot of other venues, yet if a smashfest like this were to happen at a certain other few venues (you know exactly the ones), you'd see that track vanish from the calendar for years. I suppose a positive side of looking at this video, is that there is a lot of material to learn from here, as is always the purpose of these things...

Usual crash fest Oulton meeting theres been loads of these over the years. But BRSCC has to sort this lot out at some point, like u said. Donington last year was shocking as well!🤦‍♂

Was gonna say how many massive crashes have there been here in recent years regarding a fence folding like paper. But Donington last year seemed like some sort of social experiment at times

The TT cup I was there, pathetic when it dried, but I was there for TCR UK, the TT cup this Saturday just gone was awful, the TT drivers managed to flip their car and someone elses

@@PescaraProductions Was thinking how come you didnt stand at the banking so you could look down to the extended hairpin and up to first corner but seems you made the right decision where you was.

@rugbymonster17 I've filmed looking at cascades from the other side for years and it all kicks off at turn 1, so decided to try something else. With its weird split spectator areas though it's one you can never get right. Wish it had a bridge or something

@@PescaraProductions Yeah it makes sense the idea of a bridge would work well. I know mallory is like that to an extent but visually it is appeasing. Same with brands

@@rugbymonster17 mallory just needs a proper bridge or tunnel for paddock access. I guess you kinda expect a bit much from the facilities when you go to Europe and see what they've invested in

TT pileup was outrageous. Also do these two PA commentators do Snett as well? Sure they’re the same ones who were absolutely dreadful last time I was there.

Spent most of the time staring at TSL I reckon lol. From Knickerbrook they'd chime in every now and then and mention some lap times then go quiet for ages. Didnt sound like they wanted to be there!

Spent a lot of time telling you that BTCC was here in 2 weeks time and that this was only a small amateur event😂😂!

What was the air ambulance for?

Medical emergency on the pit wall but beyond that I have no further info. Hopefully whoever it was is alright. They didn't run the other civic race though, but that might have been due to time. We lost 30 minutes due to the air ambulance but that could have been made up. The issue was the fact that we went into lunch already half an hour behind, and then had multiple lengthy recovery and repair times that pushed us back almost as far as an hour!

I was watching on the stream and was quite possibly in terms of driving standards the worst I’ve ever seen. Just big shunts every race! Reminded me of Oulton in 2021 for BTCC! Something about Oulton

Track needs to be wider I think. And the barriers need work

@@PescaraProductionsSurely drivers should drive according to the conditions? The tracks haven't suddenly shrunk and neither have the vehicles suddenly grown. As you mentioned though, stewardship needs to be more consistent.

@@samuelgarrod8327 The touring cars certainly have widened over the years. His tweet were interesting showing that Old Hall is about 5 cars width of tarmac on the bend but narrows into 3 wide on exit. Could do with being 5 wide the whole way round next time they surface it. Doesn't excuse the Fiesta Juniors wiping 5 cars out twice on an opening lap though😂

I'd say it must be a one off but the last one I did was no better 😅. I think they'll have to clamp down on it eventually. The track doesn't help. Turn 1 goes from being a 5 wide surface to just about 3 on the exit.

TT cup needs to join a support series, I’d rather Porsche cup back up TCR & BTCC even though BTCC isn’t any better, the BMW’s take each other out

Was also the same crashfest for these guys at Brands in April. Was something like 45 mins behind by 12:15 on the Sunday (especially impressive considering they started at 10). A shame, as TCR UK aside, there's some good grids here. TTCR has really exploded onto the scene over the last 18 months. Not sure exactly why it's so popular but good to see (though the number that have already been smashed up this year does make me wonder how long that will last)

Think they smashed a load up at Brands but thats typical for Brands. And same goes for here. Maybe try tracks that don't wreck cars lol. or maybe thats just something certain tracks get called eh?

TT Series I think is so big cos its probably not too expensive a build (in modern club racing terms at least) and its not another clone of another series. That being said the handling of them on an opening lap looks particularly nasty, and in the wet I dread to think that they're like. I reckon you'll see that refined in the off season. Because they started the year with about 30 of them and are now down to 18 or something like that😂

TT cars are gridded too close together. They look to be three wide which on a narrow track and a short run to T1 won't work. There are a number of other options for grinding cars but this one doesn't work. A rolling start is another option for big grids.

I think some people would be unhappy with rolling starts as that's something we as a nation seem to suck at on a pretty impressive scale!

If they grid stuff far apart it just means they'll crash at turn 2 instead of turn 1 😂

Been going to Oulton park for 13 years and some of the worst driving ive seen in all that time. So many red flags was unreal. I gave up and went home as soon as the tt red flag came out. Glad i have a season pass so it wasn't a waste of money

@@PescaraProductionsit’s been a ghost town since British GT, because Mr Neary has given oulton park a bad reputation yet I’ve seen brands have worse, brands is a really badly built track that downhill has a really bad offcamber at paddock hill
