During the winter maintaining the chicken coop is very important. We add wood chips to the deep litter bedding, straw to their run and update their tarp so they get more sunlight in their winter chicken run.

Love your video and how much you care about your birds. I do highly recommend switching tarps out for clear vinyl tarps in the next season They will last you alot longer then poly tarps ❤ my poly tarps never lasted because of the cat walking on the roof 😉 your chickens look happy 😊

A catch board under my roost have made my wood chips last for 10 months with no smell or obvious collection of droppiings. Board is scraped into a bucket every other day hosed off occasionally in the summer time.

Look into getting breeds that are exceptional winter layers. I had no clue when I first started that all chickens were not the same. Some excel in the heat, some in the in betweens, and other during cold weather. Heritage breeds in my opinion for homesteading are also the only way to go. Reason being is because they have much longer productivity for many more years then hybridized industrial breeds that mature quickly, give lots of eggs early, but then burn out in a year or two! Commerical farms cull every year so longevity isn't factored into the breeding equation. We do not practice that here so longevity and productivity for many years is a huge win for us. Now I only add heritage breeds and I focus on dual purpose birds and keep a flock of half winter layers, half summer layers, and then a few more dual season birds for the in betweens. I had no clue when I first started and I get so much more from my flock then I did now that I know more. Good luck!

Hi. Throw in food scraps and build the floor up. The deeper the floor covering, the warmer it is for them. With a pitchfork turn it it regularly and let the insects/worms come to the surface as food for the chooks.

Sounded like happy clucking to me. :) I went to coffee grounds for coop bedding. Don't have all that wintry weather around here and the birds aren't in there except to sleep and lay for the most part. So clean up in a couple of months or so works pretty well. No odor and a good amount poo in there by then before it goes to the soldier flies who throws a party when they get some yummy coffee flavored poo for breakfast! hahaha

I've been doing the same things for mine, glad to see I'm doing it right! Come spring, I'm going to have to open up their space in the coop. I made it almost too tight to fit through the little doorway to get eggs and add more shavings😆 Eta: chicken igloo 😝🐓🐥

When you use that compost do not till it into the soil or it will deplete nitrogen in your soil. You can plant your garden then use it to top dress your garden and you should be fine.

Plastic I don't see how it can possibly keep your chickens warm. When I was young, our family raised chickens. the only way we could keep them comfortable in Wisconsin winters was in a coop. Having a minimum of 60 chickens at a time, provided some heat in itself. However, when temps dropped, they got colder.

Did you get much condensation in the run. I was thinking doing the something similar in cold weather climate with metal chicken run but was sure if I should vent it or if it would be Ok without .

I am thinking to doing the same, is it necessary to cut vent holes in the top of the run? I am pretty new to chickens and heard different opinions on this so wasn't sure in this case.

If you add pvc pipes across the top at 1 foot intervals and cross them with additional pvc pipes held down to the run top by galvanized pipe hanger straps you can cover the whole thing with a large cleat tarp and keep them cozy. I live in New England and our chickens are cozy in their dog kennel run with a tarped top and sides. 😊
