There's another poor translation here I feel like. When Pyxis is giving the speech from atop the wall he doesn't tell them they can go home and be with their families without punishment. What he says is something along the lines of "I'll pardon anyone who deserts now. Once you succumb to the titans fear you can never fight them again. Those who have learned that fear should leave. And anyone who wishes their parents, siblings and loved ones to feel that fear should leave too!" So that little clip of dude thinking of his daughter isn't him thinking of his family and his motivation as such, it's Pyxis saying your loved ones will feel the fear you now feel, and dude thinks of his daughter feeling that crippling fear and being eaten, and then he realises he needs to stay. Linguistically it's similar enough but I think the meaning feels different.
