@ 6:30 important to note that trucks will typically only fall out of freight car trucks. In contrast newer passenger equipment and late era steam locomotive tenders are typically pinned such that the trucks will not fall out when the car is lifted. A plaque on the side of many passenger cars will say "Remove Center Pin before lifting car and removing trucks" @ 24:20 newer steam locomotives had a preference for running in the forwards direction on account of their valve gear. What specifically comes to mind is the Laird type multiple bearing cross head guides, because the way the cross head bearing was positioned, you could damage the bearing over time by running it in reverse. Donald Church's book on the Cab Forwards has a great explanation when he talks about the Cab Forward design and why only the AC9 class had Laird type multiple bearing cross heads. @ 26:15 The centerline of the driving wheels tends to be a few inches below the centerline of the driving cylinders. So for many steam locomotives the maximum power output is when rods are at bottom center, where the effective length of the throw arm is a few inches longer.

@ 26:40 From what I've seen, I believe that the incline on the Porter's cylinders is to reduce the distance between the driving cylinders and the valve box. The eccentrics being located between the frame forces the valve motion to be transferred to the outside of the frame at the front upper portion, right behind the cylinder saddle. Having the cylinders angled means that the steam doesn't need to be moved as far, and the valve motion is more direct.

Another note about drop-bottom hoppers, depending on location there are mechanical systems that open the hoppers as they're rolling and close them back, so nobody has to open the cars manually or even stop the train. 1 - The Commonwealth Railways used standard gauge gondolas/open wagons for Leigh Creek coal traffic in South Australia were unloaded using a rotary dumper at the Port Augusta power station. This included the rotary couplers. This arrangement lasted until the late 1990’s when bottom drop hoppers were introduced. 2 - Terowie (also in South Australia) was a break of gauge location between the narrow and broad gauge networks and a tippler was used to transship coal between the two networks. 3 - Bogie exchange workshops were common for a long time with whole trains being bogie exchanged so they can continue their journey. Occasionally broad or standard gauge wagons would occasionally end up on narrow gauge with occasionally interesting results! Individual locomotives have also worked on broad, standard and narrow gauges during their service lives.

Inclined cylinders are done either to fit them more compactly within the locomotive, or to maximise clearances in the loading gauge. It's not much of an issue with american platforms since they're so low, but in other places it's been necessary to raise the cylinders in order to clear obstacles like that. The BR standard class 9 is a good example.

With regards to angled cylinders, the Virginian Railway had a massive 2-10-10-2 Mallet, the Class AE, that had the front cylinders angled. In that case it was because the front Low Pressure Cylinders were so massive they had to angle them for the right clearance. Not sure how often clearance issues was the reason for them, but it was one of the reasons to go for them.

I've actually only ever seen LGB produce starter sets with an 0-4-0T, and even then it's their iconic but headache-inducing maintenance nightmare model of the Styrian State Railways Stainz #2. Just talking about G-scale (since those starter sets tend to be the most minimalist), PIKO generally includes 0-6-0STs although they do have options that include 2-axle industrial diesel switchers, but on the flip side they also make "premium" starter sets that come with a mini mogul (in fact, it's the very same locomotive as the Cooke Mogul in Railroads Online). Bachmann always puts an 1890s 4-4-0 American or 2-6-0 Mogul in their starter sets. Meanwhile, USA Trains invariably includes an SW1500 Diesel Switcher in their starter sets. Moving down to O-scale, I've never seen Lionel put anything smaller than an Alco RS3 in their starter sets, they usually include some sort of iconic main-line locomotive like a Hudson or an F7A in their starter sets. No one else makes starter sets in this scale. In anything smaller than O-scale, you usually get an iconic main-line locomotive and surprisingly large amount of rolling stock. Smallest ones I've seen at the smaller scales are the Bachnman starter sets that come with an F7A, two freight cars and a caboose, and the KATO starter sets that come with an F40PH or Amtrak Genesis and three full-length passenger cars or a 4-car DMU or EMU. Of course, when you start to get up to the bigger "miniature" gauges, that's when you start seeing extremely minimalist starter sets. Most companies that manufacturer 7.5" gauge don't even make starter sets, but the ones that do typically give you either a battery or gas powered industrial 2-axle and an engineer's car. (In miniature railroading, an engineer's car is used when a locomotive is too small or not designed with on-board seating or controls.)

I would’ve never thought that it was gravity alone that kept cars to trucks, but it does make sense. I should’ve expected though, cause on the Newfoundland Railway, there was a car ferry from North Sydney, Nova Scotia to Port-Aux-Basque. But there the NFLD was 3’6”, so the trucks had to be swapped out before head up the line. I’d never thought about how they swapped them out before.

One thing to note about inclined cylinders was that if you’re railway had more restrictive gauging, you could have larger, more powerful cylinders by mounting them on an incline rather than in the linear. The lms crabs are a good example, as the midland region had quite a tight gauge due to their small engine policy which was predominantly populated by inside cylinder locomotives

Iron ore Docks here in the Great Lakes Region uses mostly gravity. They use the drop bottom hopper cars into a mesh. Then below the docks Iron Ore Freighters undo hatches. Once they are open, they lower chutes. Then they open panels in the side of the Iron ore collection, and gravity has the Iron Ore slide down the chutes into the cargo hold of the ship. That way, they can carry multiple train load across the lakes to harbor factories

The whole process of dumping loads from narrow to standard, is why side tipping wagons were invented. First wooden ones with the body lifted higher off the chassis and long rods, usually with a door on one side that would open as you tip. Then later one V skips were made, same sort of principle except its all made from metal, and the carrying bit is in a v shape length-ways. The two hinge points are on either end of the wagon, and literally rest on bars at each end, so you tip either way and the skip part won't fall off, but is loose.

So I found this little railroad museum quite close to where I live (can’t believe I never knew about it). It’s an old 900mm gauge peat railway (“feldbahn”) that was used to transport peat from the field to the processing plant. They almost exclusively used the tiniest of tiny 0-4-0 diesel engines to run quite long trains. Today they still use some of these engines, mostly from the ‘30s-‘50s, to run trains of old peat cars that they converted to passenger cars! You won’t believe the curves that they use on those feldbahn railways sometimes, it’s actually ridiculous and it probably only works because of the extremely short wheelbases of the locomotives and cars.

I'm pretty sure they angled cylinders for tight clearances: If it's angled, your cylinder will end up being mounted much higher on the frame than if it's horizontal. I suspect that with Betsy's munchkin drivers, horizontal cylinders would be kicking a lot of debris and ballast. In Britain, where all platforms were high and very close to the rails, practically all locomotives with medium-sized or bigger outside cylinders with driving wheels smaller than 6 feet had angled cylinders. The LMS Hughes "Crab" 2-6-0s are a pretty hilarious example, but even the last mainline locomotives, the BR 9f 2-10-0s had noticeably angled cylinders. Separately, some early locomotives like Stephenson's Rocket had extremely sharp-angled cylinders, because they were trying to square the conventional wisdom of the time that said that vertical cylinders allowed even wear on the piston and would therefore reduce maintenance on the engine, with the fact that vertical cylinders just absolutely wrecked the rails, especially in the early days of cast or wrought iron.

In Europe when they change from iberian gauge to standard gauge, they will bring the car onto a track with 4 rails and on the side of the track are 4 big electric jacks witch will lift up the body of the car so they can remove the bogies and bring bogies of the other gauge. Today different company have different methods to do this while the train is moving. Today this process has mostly changed to the new process of doing it while the train is moving but there is still one night train in Moldova that is getting lifted of its bogies. But today it’s often many times faster to just change trains

Ello Hyce! now when you showed the photo of the "thing" you mention, I got a little bit of knowledge on it, due to me playing Gmod (Garry's mod) and operating the thing during OPS on a trainbuild server. So, the thing you mention is actually called a Rotary Dump. What it does is that you load the car onto it right? once it is omn there, you or another person go to a special control room thjat has buttons and/or switches to operate it. once everything is set, the operator activates it with a button or switch and the rotary Spins to the upside down position (max is 180 degrees) and the ore dumps out of it whilet eh car is upside down. Once the car is fully empty, the operator uses the switch/button again to spin the car back onto it's bogies. after the car is back on all bogies, there is a special button/switch that will automatically push the car off the rotary. now once it is pushed out, the track has to have a bit of a incline at the end of it and the switch for it will change automatically. now the track for the rotary dump has two variants, one for flat ground, one for incluines. now for inclines, since there is no engine powering the car up, the operator has yet another button/switch that activates a specal device that acts like a escolator/conveyor that latches and pushes on the rear most bogey. after it is latched on automatically, it will then immediately push that bogey makin g the car move up the grade. after it hits the peak of the graded track, it will then automatically release and retract and then move down ready for the next car. now how they stop the moving car? well, they have special stoppers at the end of the double railed mini yard track that will stop the car. once all cars are unloaded from the rotary dump and are at a standstill, they bring in the locmotive to couuple all the cars back together. once all cars of the train are coupled again, the train go es back to the mine or wherever for the next load. also, the stoppers go down when bringing the locomotive in, forgot to say that. I have seen it in Gmod before, since I used to go into trainbuild servers and do OPS and some of my loads, well, have gone to the rotary. so yeah that is my knowledge on it. sorry for this LONG comment Hyce. either way, keep up your guys railroad and uhh also keep having fun! can';t wait to do an OPS session on that with you AND kAN!

I am thinking of running the eastern mountain gap between the factory and the iron mine to really cut the distance. Also you can just grab drag and let go to place the iron ore chute at the right angle, no reason to go up and down like that. I also use Y turn arounds on my railroad as they are so much simpler, and I can turn around a full consist with them. Only use turntables when I have no choice for space.

probably wrong, but one possible interpretation of angled cylinders: depending where the cylinder cocks are, it may help gather condensed water to help clear the cylinder

When you were talking about the tank steering at 40mins British (UK) narrow gauge had locomotives with two fronts.

keep in mind not everything scales properly, sometime a little thing that doesn't make a difference on a big engine in this case, make a huge difference in a very small one. for instance coil over drop shackle on crawlers, in a life size it can be a very bad idea, bit in a rc, can help drastically and doesn't cause problems driving it, with a torquey crawler, you put in a motor for speed and its another story.

Loved the little train! Daft idea for Montezooma: maybe get a few more caboose to make a small passenger train for it? Not sure about US stock but here in the UK we started out with 4 wheel coaching stock, so may look nice with a few of the caboose you have already with the larger view port caboose on the back?

So I was very much inspired by the iron route you guy took but I went a little crazy with it... its a 9% grade at first and I run a C-70 and the Heistler to pull 4 hoppers, 4 lumber, 4 beams and the bobber up. Its good fun.

A thing I'd recommend, use Montezuma for lighter traffic over the road, even use her for light switching moves wherever needed.
