This is a beautiful idyllic love song written by Polly & David.....capturing their love together. The lyrics evoke that very British tradition of walking along the river, having a picnic, talking together and escaping the world. I can see you two doing the same thing..... Thanks for playing this track.

Hi you guys , love watching your channel 👍 I love Dave Gilmore and Pat Metheny like you do . I live Five minutes from the river Thames in Molesey , Surrey England . Much of this Album was recorded on Daves Restored Victorian houseboat which is moored a few minutes walk further along on the opposite bank . Many Pink Floyd Albums were recorded on the boat , including “Dark Side Of the moon “ In the lovely English summer it only gets dark slowly around 10 pm and we often walk past it along the riverside on those still warm nights - sometimes there is a light on board 🌝

This is really good. It sets a nice mellow mood. Not a die hard Floyd fan but definitely appreciate their music. I listened to some of Gilmours earlier solo stuff I believe his first album came out a year or so before The Wall? But wow is it great and you can totally see how he was just warming up for The Wall. Wonderful track from an excellent album. His 1st solo album "About Face" is brilliant with tracks like "Until We Sleep" & "Murder" and his 2nd solo outing simply titled "David Gilmore" has Pink Floyd stamped most of the way through it. "I Can't Breathe Anymore" which is the last track really shows that. Surprised you haven't heard early Pink Floyd, so it needs to be asked "Echoes" ? from the album Meddle - Have you ? Haven't you ? The track is so iconic, I'm guessing you have.....surely ? Lol Thankyou for another great reaction.

I am a long, long time Floyd fan, but when I first heard this album, it immediately became my favorite of any Floyd related music. You can get a real of sense of the true joy and contentment that David was experiencing when he made this album. With some of his best friends playing along with him, he actually recorded this masterpiece on an island, there with most of his family, including his wife Polly who wrote the lyrics! What a beautiful place, both physically and emotionally, to craft this spellbinding album. Please, please, please treat yourselves and listen to this album in it's entirety...you'll be so glad you did. Oh, just one point of contention Nick. David Gilmour is absolutely a blues guitarist, of the highest order indeed. Most of DSOTM, WUWH, and Animals is straight up blues, just unlike most you've heard before. And on the soundtrack to More, he lets it rip on the track More Blues. Also Seamus off of Meddle is about as bluesy as you get.

This album also features Richard Wright on keyboards. David Gilmore Live at the Royal Albert Hall is a must to see. He performs this album in entirety as well as Pink Floyd material with special guests. His latest LP, Rattle That Lock is just as tasty with songs for his mother and Rick Wright. And even does a jazz tune, The Girl in the Yellow Dress.

When Roger Waters started his 'Brick in the Wall' tour, he had said it took 2 vocalists and 3 guitarists (or maybe it was 3 vocalists and 2 guitarists?) to duplicate the sound of ONE David Gilmour. That is a major compliment from someone who did not get along with his BEST Pink Floyd asset. Listen to "Comfortably Numb" if you don't believe me.

I love this song, I think this is the first time I've seen a reaction to it so thank you. This is a great album. It's a little slower in tempo than his other solo work and imo, translates better in the live recordings. Most people will say to listen to the Live From Gdansk show but the Remember That Night DVD feels more quintessentially Gilmour. I find the music more soulful and introspective compared to the more aggressive Gdansk show. As much as I love this album, I would rank it behind his first solo album titled "David Gilmour" from 1978 and "Rattle That Lock" from 2015, but ahead of 1984's "About Face". Looking forward to more Gilmour solo reactions, so much amazing music to choose from there. The Roger Waters stuff as well but not nearly as much. I won't say why since you'll be going into Roger's solo stuff soon as well. I want to see if you both feel the way I do about his post-Floyd career. Stay safe!

In a way this is an amazing and sad album as it was David's last recorded album with legend Richard Wright RIP. I loved your reaction and comments . With Gilmours's playing its not so much the notes he plays but what he doesn't play that allows him to draw so much soul and emotion. On this track he plays a rare Gibson somehow making it sound like an acoustic guitar. His Wife Polly Samson wrote the lyrics for this masterpiece album. Love you to try On an Island live ,youll be moved.

Great reaction and song choice guys. When I was listening to this tune I thought to myself: "Man those notes are so tasty" Which of course you (Nik) used that very phrase to describe what you heard. For me this sound feels like it goes back to earlier Pink Floyd and some of the mellower song on Meddle and Obscured by Clouds. A very similar feel. On that topic I was very lucky to finally (Multiple COVID cancellations of his concert up here in Toronto) see Nick Mason and his amazing band. He played nothing past Meddle. So we got to here all of the amazing stuff I never heard live from Relics, Ummagumma, Obscured by Clouds, Atom Heart Mother and Meddle. Check the out if they come to CO. Great music! Thanks for reacting to this one! It's amazing how the music from the '70s is still alive and well and those like Gilmore are still making new music. I was an impressionable teenager in the '70s and got to hear things like 'Dark Side of the Moon' when it was hot off the shelves. My concert-going started in '76 when I got my driver's license. Before that I was riding my bike to the record store to get the latest R&R like Rush Fly By Night when it was new. It's been, oh, a week since you did Rush. Please share 'Red Barchetta'(Moving Pictures). Or, since you've barely scratched the surface of ELP, try 'The Endless Enigma' (Trilogy). And if either one of those doesn't float yer boat, react to 'And You and I' (Close to the Edge). You'll LOVE it!

Nice to see you soooooo loved up listening to this, but it's always a mystery to me that when people are discovering artists that are new to them, they start with the latest stuff first. The "On an Island" album is admittedly full of beautiful, effortless romanticism, with one or two notable exceptions to shake your complacency, but why not hit the first two albums before seeing how Mr G developed his sound/style. If you want to appreciate how varied he can be, try comparing "Cry from the Street", "Short and Sweet" and "So Far Away" from his eponymous first album before moving on to "Blue Light", "Out of the Blue" and the final pairing of "Let's get Metaphysical" and "Near the End" from the second solo album, "About Face". As a little extra treat, take a look at David performing "Breakthrough" with his friend Richard Wright, from the latter's own solo album "Broken China": kzfaq.info/get/bejne/huCEipyIydKVgGw.html If that doesn't get you, you have no souls.

Gilmour's playing and touch is the quintessence of emotional and soulful playing. From documentary 'Wider Horizons' when asked of his most memorable musical experience David responded that BB King said to him once after playing together, " Boy, are you sure you weren't born in Mississippi ? ". That memory displays his respect for the blues and it shows in his soulful and sublime musical legacy. He will be remembered as a Beethoven or Listz of our time. Btw, you MUST review his live performance of instrumental MAROONED from the DVD of The Strat Pack--Fender 50th anniversary celebration from 2002 I believe. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/gJqbmqWhzNW1kYk.html Many rock stars participated. That whole album ON AN ISLAND is extraordinary by Gilmour. As Rick Wright is on keyboards and vocals. and Guy Pratt on bass who did most of the later live Floyd concerts are on this you pretty much have a Pink Floyd album.David also has the ex lead guitarist from Roxy Music as second guitar Phil Manzanera. The whole GDAŃSK concert had them playing most of the back PINK FLOYD catalogue - I’d suggest the last time David and Rick Wright played ECHOES deeply moving and the depth of understanding between those two is beautiful. I was privileged to BOOK PINK FLOYD as a co promo with UNIVERSITY OF EAST ANGLIA / NORWICH CITY COLLEGE and has to announce them - they said they were ready but as I went on I heard a flurry of activity and assumed there was a problem and started filling in. Gilmour said: “uh we’re ready man … “ Cue announcement and my embarrassed exit! They previewed the entire MEDDLE album which if you have never heard you MUST - DARK SIDE OF THE MOON is prefigured. UMMA GUMMA is Floyd between the psychedelic whimsy of Syd Barrett stretching their musical abilities and improvising with CAREFUL WITH THAT AXE EUGENE and SET THE CONTROLS FOR THE HEART OF THE SUN. Both of those by the way revisited at Gdańsk. A stand out track is however GRANCHESTER MEADOWS for its pastoral beauty, early use of real sound effects used rhythmically, and it’s a real jewel! I suggest you get the GDAŃSK concert on DVD and react to ECHOES. If you want to explore more of ON AN ISLAND try the live DVD at Royal Albert Hall with special guests DAVID BOWIE and GRAHAM NASH and DAVID CROSBY who BTW sung backup on the title track. Also on KZfaq is Floyd back in the seventies playing in the amphitheatre with no audience - he more recently revisited Pompeii another cracking concert but sadly minus Rick who had died by then - much missed. Did you know Nick Mason has a project revisiting the early Floyd? Check out his KZfaqs. And you are missing out if you haven’t visited the earlier albums particularly OBSCURED BY CLOUDS one of my personal favourites was ATOM HEART MOTHER - which you’ll never hear again from David or Roger as they both hated that album! David still plays FAT OLD SUN from that and IF I WERE A SWAN. ZABRISKIE POINT was a project where ANTONIONI asked them to score the movie - he sadly didn’t use much of their suggestions but the seeds of GREAT GIG IN THE SKY were laid there. Worth hearing for the Floyd playing Country and Western style on CRUMBLING LAND. The most obscure Floyd nugget is one of my favourites which is sadly very rare is EMBRYO used in the film THE BODY if you can locate a Harvest label sampler called PICNIC - it’s on there. Actually here it is kzfaq.info/get/bejne/o9hpbJlerJnDlY0.html

As an old Roxy music fan I love Phil Manzanera’s guitar playing on tracks like Amazona. I was lucky enough to see him on stage at a Roger Waters concert (if my memory serves me well).

Loved your faces lighting up listening to this. Gilmour just has that sound. Cool band you may have heard of is Mostly Autumn. The guitar sound is a homage to Gilmour but because they have a folky prog sound it works so well. Mostly Autumn album Passengers is incredible!!!!

A very lovely nostalgic song that rounds off a really good album, full of great songs and playing. You might consider David Gilmour doing Pink Floyd material such the double Live in Gdansk album. The concert video is even better but the album is great also. Fabulous version of High Hopes and Echoes and much more. Roger Waters also does Pink Floyd material Live. It would be very interesting to compare.

Although DG is a brilliant guitarist, I never rated his solo albums much, there is some good music on some. The best solo album from any Floyd member in my opinion is Roger Waters's AMUSED TO DEATH, well worth a listen if you have not heard it yet. All the best.

And don't forget Richard Wright's solo. :-) Nick Mason didn't really have a solo album unless you treat "Nick Mason's Fictitious Sports" as such. :-)

Yes I agree this is good.I love Floyd but without Gilmore they wouldn't have come close to being the same band.. Gilmore knows how to make his guitars talk also knows how to make you feel what he wants in your body or soul however you wanna put it. Nobody come close to making you feel or hear what his guitar is saying in my opinion.

As for David's solo stuff, you should try Raise My Rent and No Way Out of Here from his first album and Murder and All Lovers Are Deranged from About Face. If you thought this more recent song was good, those will blow you away! 😎

Agree! I don't understand why reactors to Progressive music don't catch on to VdGG sooner. Just JP Has heard H to He, Pawn Hearts and some solo Peter Hammill but not Pilgrims yet. Just discovered NicknLex. They seem really cool. I hope they listen!

VdGG Please. Bruce Dickinson, David Bowie and even Johnny Rotten among others were influenced heavily by Peter Hammill. Your mission statement is to hear new bands. Please take a chance. Thanks for listing your headphones. It was nice not to have to ask. Take care!

You mentioned you are not familiar with Ummagumma, which is a 2-album set: a live album and a studio album. A great song from this album is Astronomy Domine (live). I have attended 2 Pink Floyd concerts and they played Astronomy Domine at both concerts.

As you like Gilmour you should check out Camel another 70s Prog band who are still going today and guitarist Andrew Latimer. He has a similar approach to his playing which is all about feel rather than thrashing about.
