I run CNC's for a living, this feels weird! Reverse your cutting direction for wood and MDF (use conventional not climbing), you will get better results! Also looks like you are using and upcut cutter so its best to to cut face down so all the crappy bits are to the rear of you work. I would also recommend slowing down to around 1000mm/min, you will loose most if not all of those rough edges. (These are just my opinions, i'm sure people will disagree!) CNC's are so cool. Have fun!

+so many. I was amazed at how high their feed rate was, and while I don't know what their spindle speed was I don't think it was high enough for that feed. I've pulled parts off tables before that were butter. Oh, and I don't know if this is the "correct" way to do it, but I always set my Z zero maybe 2-3mm below the base of the part to ensure I get full penetration and don't have as much sanding to do. Eh, they'll get the hang of it, or they'll destroy the machine or seriously hurt somebody...

Linus, former CNC router operator here. Yes you really do need a ton of double sided tape on small pieces, or else you risk the worm piece becoming dislodged and shooting across the shop, potentially damaging equipment of injuring staff.
@henningholthusen831
@henningholthusen831 5 жыл бұрын
Quality double sided tape is VERY strong. Four bits of tape one inch long each would have been overkill already. I wouldn't recommend using hot glue though :)
@ignavuspersona1946
@ignavuspersona1946 5 жыл бұрын
@@henningholthusen831 Its not about the strength, but about pieces that get cut out completely, like the parts that are sticking on the tape when Linus thinks he has broken it. If you only glue parts down, but cut out a piece that didn't get any of the tape it might go flying

Add a separately zoned vacuum bed powered by a strong shopvac (ie. designed to run at mac load all day long without overheating). Don't mess with double sided tape working at these speeds and these insane amounts of torque/hp. Someone WILL get hurt eventually! Also, get a bristled dust-collecting shroud around the router bit, otherwise everything in (and adjacent to) your shop will be covered in a nice layer of the finest death-dust. Not a pleasant combination with your other cool toys! For the rest of it, have fun using this awesome piece of equipment!!

A few things you need to do: 1) Always turn off the power (to the bit) when putting your hands on the bit. That's bare bones basic shop safety. You fail high school shop class if you don't do that, even once. A guy in my school lost four fingers just in the three years I was there. 2) Also bare bones basic safety is everyone in the vicinity is required to wear safety glasses whenever the machine is used. Spare safety glasses should always be hanging on the wall near the door in case any staff enter. Anyone not wearing them needs to be told to get out before the machine is turned on. 3) Build a three sided acrylic box around the top of that cart (or a surface of your choosing) to protect the laptop from the dust. Even with the proper dust collector, you will be glad to have it. Dust will settle on everything in the entire room. 4) That bit is moving back and forth, and If the bit hits the end of the vacuum you're holding in this video, it might cause something bad to happen. Mostly it's just a bad practice. So don't do that. 5) I recommend having an open vent on the floor somewhere connected to a powerful vacuum. Then you can just sweep dust over to the vent and done.

Congrats on your new CNC machine! That's definitely something to be VERY proud of for having in-house. But...Please, guys, lockout-tagout when when performing work or maintenance inside the machine operational envelope. Tape out a perimeter on the floor to help visualize. Safety, safety, safety. Please also get a machine operation indicator light installed near the machine, and never place anything inside the machine operational envelope while it is operating (e.g. vacuum nozzles). Safety, safety, safety. Please be so careful, guys, and please heed this advice from someone that spent nearly a decade as a machinist and programmer for Thermwood Model 90's. I know this that these machines are so freakin' cool, and they are absolutely mesmerizing to watch. Just please be cautious, and know this machine can and will severely injure you if you are careless with its operation. Safety, safety, safety.

@xPreatorianx1
@xPreatorianx1 5 жыл бұрын
Agreed, I have only a few months experience in industrial machines. (Work at Dynax. which uses machines that are on average the size of a room.) and trust me, a good lockout-tagout system is mandatory. Or even if you are the operator and the machine doesn't require lockout-tag out for the parts you are changing on it, ALWAYS hit e-stop/power down the machine. Or in my case, open another area of the machine you aren't physically getting into. That way, the machine won't function anyways and it's in a different location so someone doesn't mistakenly close it while you are doing maintenance. (To add to this, open an area of the machine in full visibility to you or close enough to you that someone HAS to make visual contact with you when going to close the opened area. As I've had multiple operators assist me on a task on several occasions. So as precaution (considering sometimes they hang back while you fix the machine) I always open an area of the machine right near me, plus the actual area I'm working on. That way, I can tell someone walking by "Leave the door open. I'm not done yet!" Those above tips aren't directly comparable to this machine, but at the very least, mark up the surrounding area like you said, ONLY have one operator running the machine at a time. Always hit the e-stop and as you said NEVER put foreign objects near the machine during operation. As these machines (or their huge industrial counterparts in factories) are extremely dangerous, and will kill you if given the chance. They don't feel emotions, they won't care if your arm is being drilled, etc. They'll keep on chugging till the operation is done or someone hits the E-stop.

Linus look up what safety gear you need for a CNC. If someone is killed by it (praying that doesn't happen) your insurance will probably find you at fault for lack of safety equipment. You really need to install laxan screens to all sides to protect staff. Small offcuts can fly out at very high speed (200mph+) these are as deadly as any bullet and need to be taken seriously. You should also be wearing at least a filter mask if not a respirator, your lungs are important and breathing in plastic fibres doesn't do you any good. Sorry if this sounds like a long rant but I deeply care for all the LTT staff and want them all to be safe and happy at work. 😊 P.s. never put anything in a running CNC!!! Body parts are nothing to a CNC, if it touches you say goodbye to that body part. If you reach in with something else (say a hover) and the bit makes contact with it, you'll be lucky if you only end up with metal shards of hover in you. Please be careful and have a staff meeting explaining how deadly these extremely powerful machines can be. There an amazing tool and I'm glad but nervous you have one. Just please teach people this is a machine that needs to be respected, and is not a toy.

If you're cutting metal (aluminum or light steel) get some flexible hose attached to FOUR nozzles so you can spray or jet a stream of NON-FLAMMABLE cooling fluid (an oil which is recyclable) or plain water towards the area being CNC'ed. If you want to get REALLY FANCY when routing hard steels such as hard Plexiglas/Acrylic, Stainless Steel or Maraging Steel or 8000 Series aluminum, you can do FULL IMMERSION CNC where the part itself is immersed fully in a 12 inch deep tray of NON-FLAMMABLE and HEAT-RESISTANT cooling oil or plain water so the ENTIRE PART is cut/drilled/routed underwater. Do remember that that ONE LITRE of cooling fluid is about 2.5 lbs or one kilogram of weight, so make sure the routing table can actually withstand 1000 kilos of weight (2500 lbs) that will be caused by a fully filled water/coolant tray. Also, I would HIGHLY SUGGEST some extra electrical grounding-to-Earth and ground-fault-interrupt switches for your controller gear, water-sealed electrical cabling and for the motors which SHOULD also be upgraded to FULLY waterproof motors! With that UPGRADED machine, you can CNC full aluminum or stainless steel cases with 3D sculpted artwork such as skulls and cross bones for your pirate-themes computers, or you can make a single SUPER-DUPER-COMPUTER-CASE out of a solid block of Aluminum or transparent or tinted Acrylic with room for EIGHT fully 3D sculpted interior forms which have built-in cooling fins and standoffs that can fit x399 motherboards that are FULLY IMMERSED in LIQUID COOLANT !!! Now THAT would be a killer project to do for LTT! P.S. Remember to powder-coat the metal version of the 3D sculpted 8-Motherboard super-case using glow-in-the-dark yellow paint with blue pinstriping and a skull'n'bones pirate motif!

Dust safety is going to be a huge problem if you don't take adequate precautions. At a minimum you need P100 rated dust mask for anyone in the same room as that thing. A changing room to change out of the clothes you wore inside the room would be a good idea too as that stuff sticks to your clothing and contaminates every space you go into. Breathing too much of that dust will give you silicosis. Dust collectors will not protect you from fine dust particles, they catch the larger stuff but are only partially effective on the really fine stuff that causes health problems. Just take a look at the HEPA filter in your dust collector after a few uses, that's the stuff you breath in while being in the same room as that gear. Despite the health risks. Well worth it for what that machine will let you guys do. billpentz.com/woodworking/cyclone/index.cfm

I agree with @Eidetic Ex. You need dust filters or at least dust masks and good ventilation. The ultra fine dust using a cnc router creates can be a carcinogen, depending on material cut. Also wood dust can be a fire and explosion hazard. While this is unlikely for a small router, doing small jobs it is still better to be on the safe side. Source: Worked programming and setting up cnc routers and milling centers for 6 years. edit: P.S. Sorry for the safety nagging, CNC Routers are still awesome :D
