Our South American ‘race’ to the farthest drivable point south in an Ariel Nomad

It’s a long episode, but it was a long trip! We shipped Nomad from England to Colombia to drive the full length of South America from north to south. From the Caribbean Sea at Cartagena, down the Pacific coast to the Beagle Channel near Ushuaia, and back up to the Atlantic Ocean for return shipping from Buenos Aires. Twelve thousand miles of jungles, mountains, beaches and deserts, stray dogs & friendly people, from bustling capital cities to remote villages and wilderness. It’s an epic adventure.

My dream for the last 10 years has been to not only buy my dream car (Ariel Nomad) but also take it to all 50 US States. Still saving my pennies but maybe one day

My dream car 😍😍😍 but unfortunately the price is too expensive if it comes to my country Indonesia 😭😭😭 so finally I made my own Nomad...a little more than 25℅ left to finish it 😇😇😇

Epic folks! Dream car and dream destination. What was the emergency drunken repair? And why doesnt the vin match? Surely it should no?

The rear mud guard brackets are a weak point and don’t last very long on anything other than smooth tarmac. Unfortunately without them stones are thrown up in all directions, including into the cabin (which is how the windscreen was damaged on the inside)!

Oh, and the vin plate has one digit that doesn’t match the registration document, just an error that must have happened when first registered. The discrepancy was picked up by Colombian customs in Cartagena, but nobody else on the trip noticed, thankfully. It did make ALL border crossings a bit twitchy though! 😬😂

What an amazing adventure 😊! How did you get the suspension fixed after the dampers broke?

Hey, thanks for your message 😊 The suspension in particular was a real saga! Ariel were very good at shipping parts to us from the UK when things broke, but unfortunately we couldn’t find anyone to rebuild the dampers. We had to persevere for the majority of the trip on the failed Öhlins. Gravel tracks at speed were spine-crunching! 😂

@@racetosomeplace7210 wow ok. That must have been very uncomfortable. I've just bought a nomad with the ohlins myself so I hope they don't fail as quickly as yours. Did they tell you why they failed so quickly and how you could have avoid it? Cheers. Max

I was told by the service manager at Ariel that the Öhlins damper is a competition unit designed to be rebuilt after each race. He didn’t tell me this until after we’d shipped the car and encountered problems, unfortunately! Ours failed after about 300 miles of gravel. If I were to do the same kind of extended, non-metalled road trip again, I’d be giving the Fox shocks a try. Or learning how to rebuild dampers myself! 😂
