Once again I think you handled this situation very well. It’s all about gaining experience and accepting the financial hits when they come. Also there are so many beginners at sailing, just like us, so we always have to be aware of the lack of experience of others. A great preparation video for me sailing to The Algarve from Ireland in June. ⛵️

Anchor markers can be a pain, real pain. OK to use in rocky sea bed where you want a trip line in case anchor gets stuck. Bit just to mark your anchor not great. I’ve enjoyed idiots tie to them as a mooring buoy! Boats run them over in the dark or swing over them, get them caught in rudder or propeller (even if not running) and then pull your anchor out and you drag. We have one we hardly ever use. In Lakka bay we saw a boat that picked up their own anchor marker line to the buoy in their rudder as the swung around at night, this tripped their own anchor. Great to also tie to chain if you have to drop your anchor and chain as you did…..if yo have time

Hindsight, that exact science. Yes, attaching the buoy when you dumped the anchor would have been great but I can imagine how stressful it was and split second decisions. Bummer about the anchor but hopefully you find it and the guy who dragged into you. Sounds like he wasn’t much help. Stay safe guys. Andy UK

These things happen and all add to the bag of experience. Anchor ball yes but even when you cast it off you could have tied some fenders to it. I had the same thing in Big Vathi except it was me dragging. Did not hit anything but after re setting a few times gave up and did the motor thing. You two looked a million times fresher than I felt. 🙂

Our first big boat. The number of times I said we’re sellin this fn boat in what we perceived as dire situations at sea, but we survived and learnt and graduated to an even bigger boat, on which we didn’t have an I’m sellin this boat occurrence once in eleven years. Keep on keepin on sailing brummies

In a nutshell you explained sailing quite completely...Hours of boredom and moments of shear panic. Well done I'd say, culminating in a bowl of pasta. I think it's fair to say you two are true sailors

An anchor marking buoy causes as many problems as they solve. They get wrapped round the chain and other boats catch them, especially at night. You did great, maybe consider a grapnel hook to recover your chain and anchor?

When the other boat lifted their anchor they probably pulled your tackle as well and took it. 🤔👍🇪🇸

I've recently bought a boat and I am starting my sailing journey. I think you did great to minimise damage and protect life. The 95% of sailing you talk about sounds great. You never know how you will react when the 5% happens even if you make plans for everything.

Very interesting as usual, glad you're ok! I have these newbie questions... 1. Was the fact that the other guy was dragging and not you related to the weight of the anchor relative to the boat? 2. In terms of preventive stuff, apart from having the anchor ball to help others see and yourself find the anchor, is it a possibility or common practice to drop your two anchors to reduce dragging? 3. How much will it cost to repair your solar panel and - if you don't find it - replace your main anchor?
@ChasingCurrents
@ChasingCurrents Жыл бұрын
Hey thank you for commenting 😁. 1 so were not sure about the other guy dragging but we assume he might not have set his anchor properly or not had enough chain out, or maybe both. 2. As far as preventing this happening there isn't really much that can be done, if he was going to drag on to us then nothing we could do (other than have moved before he got to us) would have stopped it. But if we would have attached a float to our anchor chain before letting it go then we might have been able to find it. 3. So the panel and mount cost £200 ish together to replace. The anchor was around £350 and the chain £400. Hopefully you find this useful 😊

Well done guys, you did really well in the circumstances. What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger 💪 I’ve been in similar fixes and the most important thing is to do something- you made a decision and it worked - you didn’t end up on the rocks, you’re fine, the boat’s fine, so all good. The sailing earlier that day was perfect too - sails were set perfectly

Aw thank you, means a lot to hear that😁 It's easy to think of what we should've done, but you're right the most important thing is that we made a decision and we're safe! Cheers for that, maybe we're finally learning how to sail 😂

You guys did the right thing. The rocks are not your friend. the best of us have had to make those decisions quickly, especially if there is tangled anchor situation. Better the anchor and chain goes, and you and the boat live to sail another day. Nothing you can do about other boats that don’t set right, or have a poor performing anchor, other than just trying to to stay away from them in the first place. It has happened to me in hurricane conditions and the results were catastrophic. Glad you both and Talisman are still above the water.
@ChasingCurrents
@ChasingCurrents Жыл бұрын
Thank you 😁 Yeah that's exactly it, always the worry that even if you're set well that a neighbour could come along and drag into you! Sorry to hear that you had to go through a hurricane, that sounds absolutely terrifying. At least you're safe, hope you never have to experience that again! Cheers, all our best ⛵️

Bummer guys, what a git the other boat just doing a runner. Definitely if you have his details insurance job. He should pay for damage, new chain and anchor, and any marina costs etc. If you have to ditch chain and anchor tie a line longer than depth with a fender or bout to chain before you drop it. That way you can get it back later easily. Obviously if you have time and can do so, but if conditions don’t allow that no much you can do. Best of luck, hope you get his details and get sorted

I had to drop an anchor in Greece in a similar situation. Luckily the current Mrs. Phagi had the wit to tie a fender and a long line onto the end of the chain just before I cut the bitter end. Picked up the fender the next day.

Could have been worse. I spy a Lofrans windlass? Yeah, lesson learnt, you should always have a float bouy and rope on the bitter end of the chain, your anchor is your main insurance, does not pay to lose it. Carry on.

Absolutely NO on the anchor ball. It makes more trouble than it solves. It is just a great way to foul anchors and catch in dinghy props. Just look around and you will see no one using it. There's a reason.

You guys did great in a dire situation. You also were able to identify what you could do better. That other boater sounds like a jack ass. He really was content waiting til morning, ie on the rocks and taking you with him. He is the epitome of the old sailor that doesn't do anything with others well. Also the type that probably doesn't have insurance and you wish to never run into soneone like him. I'd bet he picked up his anchor with yours still attached. Then Fled the area after doing damage to your boat. You probably could've had the coast guard track him down with the boat description. Great video btw.

It's always better to dump an anchor rather than risk the boat. It's a shame when it happens but that's sailing unfortunately. I confess, we don't use an anchor boeuy but maybe we will from now on. We really love watching your adventures from the crew of konsort_aqiarius.
