I used to wheel and deal travel cards. Family of six and we all love to travel. So much we took the next step: my wife went to work for as a flight attendant. The freebies and discounts are definitely worth it as long as I’m pulling the real money in. After 10-15 years, travel privileges become lifelong. One extreme travel hack I’ve seen is a married couple both resign their teaching positions when their pensions kicked in and spend a couple of years working part time jobs simultaneously at a hotel chain, car rental agency, and the airlines. Take all three down and it’s time to travel super cheap. I don’t need miles for my day trip to Montana this weekend or my two day ski trip in Colorado next week. I did buy an IKON season pass last week using the Fidelity Visa and put the 2% cash back straight into an index fund.

Okayyyyyyy.. I do a lot of Travel Hacking and I have like 22 credit cards with a credit score more than 800. Few things which you need to remember, 1. When you are applying for credit, banks will check history of EXACTLY 90 days. If you need multiple credit cards, you open 3 different browsers and apply in all 3 of them simultaneously (I have done that). If you need more apply exactly at 91th day, you will get more cards. PLEASE use your credit cards as debit card, that means you have to pay on time always. If your credit score is bad, then you wont get anything. I did this to collect points around 1.5 - 2 years back. (Dave Ramsey will kill me for this advice :P ) 2. On your credit history, 2 things are very important. Are paying on time and how much credit Utilization there is. What I do is I pay 98% of all the bills on my credit card BEFORE due date. When bill is generated, utilization is always 2 or lower percentage. For example, very first CC I applied I got credit of 10k , I bought tickets to travel to my home town, bill for that month was around 3-4k, I had money in my savings and I thought I will pay after bill is generated. However, it is a red flag for computers, for them you are utilizing 30% of your credit, doesnt matter if you have money in your savings/checkings account. I saw a dip of 35 points on my credit score. Keep your utilization low by paying before due date. 3. I use 1 CC for daily use. Which CC to pick is important. Some gives you points, some gives you cash. I used capital one card for a long time, it was giving 2% points but when you redeem them, it is only at 1%. I moved to BOA travels card, due to preferred status I get bonus cash backs from them. These cash backs are collected separately, I will use them when I go for travel next. Online shopping cash back is 3%, which we are doing a lot these days. I haven't searched for a card in more than a year, there might be good deals. Your everyday shopping card does helps a lot for travel expenses. I have around 1500$ worth of points in Capital one and around 700$ in BOA. This is just from every day use of CC over months. They do add up. 4. You credit scores will take hit when you apply for cards. Open a free account with creditkarma and monitor your credit history. In 1 year if you are traveling twice then you can apply for 1 and ask your gf/bf/spouse/partner/friend to apply for 2nd. If you are going to buy a home, do not apply for credits card at all for 1 year before you purchase. Use credit card wisely, I am good with budgeting/accounting/numbers. I remember each and every transactions on all of my credit cards. I missed 1 payment on my wife's credit card in last 6 years and that is coz she didn't forward me the statement when it was generated :). She is not a detailed person as me, so I put all her credit cards on auto pay. I login to both of our checking accounts regularly and keep an eye if there isnt any fraudulent transactions. Finally Christina & Amon, thanks a lot for your investing videos. I am learning a lot from you both. I will take your course as well in next few weeks.

Are there a lot of restrictions, generally speaking, with how you can apply the bonus points earned for travel- does the CC company dictate what airline, what dates, etc or does it allow for a lot of flexibility? This is seriously awesome and I appreciate you sharing it!
@OurRichJourney
@OurRichJourney 5 жыл бұрын
Vesna Nunez - It depends upon the cards that you sign up for. We've used cards that are really flexible and that have allowed us to travel all around the world. If you know where you want to travel ahead of time, it helps when you identify what cards to get. Happy travels - thanks for watching! :)

When you use a credit card you spend 12%-18% more. Most travel hackers advocate having multiple cards. It's so easy for those credit card balances to get away from you. I stopped using my credit card and I noticed I was spending a lot less than I used to. It was subtle things, instead of being Sprite I'd buy the store brand I stopped buying desserts when I went out to eat. Most miles have blackout dates and are hard to redeem.

Can the CC be utilized for paying rent, utility bills & car note durring these offers to qualify for travel mile points or Accomodations/ lodging? Will it still qualify as an equal spending/ Purchasing requirement? say $3k in 3 months as per the CC offer rules? BTW your videos are very helpful and Chuck full of much needed info. I was wondering how bad it will hurt your credit by opening another card. We did the chase sapphire card and amassed 2300.00 and just booked our flight to Zurich Switzerland for this coming summer and haven't had the card a year yet. So would you suggest starting another card for the bonus points to have that same amount for next year with a different card? I want to do this but I don't want to ruin my credit score...it is 780ish right now. Love your channel btw.
@OurRichJourney
@OurRichJourney 5 жыл бұрын
From our experience each additional card we received dropped our score by 5 points for about a month. Then the score recovered. Cancelling the card was also a small hit but again it recovered. What was most interesting was our scores actually went up significantly more since we started travel/credit card hacking. And this is because of our utilization rate. The additional cards increased our available credit but since we pay of the cards each month in full, we show 0% utilization. And utilization accounts for 30% of your score. At such a low utilization, our scores have gone from the high 700s to low 800s. You mention you've amassed 2300.00. We hope you are paying that off in full before the statement closing date. If you don't pay the cards in full you end up paying interest and having a high utilization rate which costs money and hurts your score. That would defeat the value of travel hacking. Regarding, another card, I can tell you we have a plan for how many cards we need to sign up for to meet our travel goals. What are your goals? Since we travel a lot and we usually have one new card always going until we meet the minimum spend to get the bonus. Then we move on to the next card. Hope that helps. For more information on credit utilization check out our video on increasing your credit score: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ncdnhdZ00MCdaGg.html

I love you guys so much already! Lol I did this for a trip to Vegas by opening a chase credit card and it paid for most of my expenses. I tried getting another travel card the other day and my boyfriend (with good intentions) told me to not open another card since I had just opened an amazon one. How do you know when you have opened up too many credit cards for this hacking purpose?
@OurRichJourney
@OurRichJourney 5 жыл бұрын
Great question! We've very disciplined with opening cards. Only opening them when we have a specific trip to hack. We also pay them in full every month. And once we use the points we usually close the card to limit the amount of cards we have open. We have a core set of cards we've kept for a long time to insure we maintain a long credit history. We've found that opening the cards dings your credit by a 5 points or so. But after the increase available credit boost our scores even more. So opening a lot of cards doesn't harm us if you pay them in full and before the statement closing date. Check out this video to see why we say this: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ncdnhdZ00MCdaGiM.htmlou can open too many cards though if you don't have the spending in your budget to meet the minimum spend to get the sign-up bonus. Remember the hack is all about getting the initial sign-up bonus. That is where you get the biggest bang. You can also open too many cards if you find you have more points then you can use and your point expire. This is the case with some bonus points. You must use them in 12 to 18 months. Hope that helps :-)P.S. Check out our travel videos to see how we've obtained and strategically used our points. Here is our trip to Singapore over the summer: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/aNSKmrubur6olac.html

Ok I understand the concept but I have a question. Where do you transfer the rewards such as airline miles or hotel points as you are churning credit cards? Example... I open delta Amex, I get the 70k miles in the spending time.... I receive the reward. I’m closing the credit card and reapplying for another delta Amex to receive the 70k. How do I combine the miles? TIA. Great video. Side question, I was always under the impression that opening and closing credit cards is discouraged as it hurts your credit. Was that a myth? TIA

If the card doesn't offer any other benefit outside of the sign up bonus then you should stop using it. You can shut it down closer to when the annual fee is due (if applicable), that way you still have the benefit of the increased available credit.

@@shaknbake1212 You can transfer them to an airline or hotel partner before closing the card obviously. The cool thing is that wherever you transfer your points to, you can keep transferring them from airline to airline. For example, you can transfer your Chase UR points to JetBlue, then to Alaska Airlines if Chase doesn't partner with Alaska.

Depends on what other benefit the card offers once you've used the sign up bonus. Also depends on whether it has an annual fee. For example I have the Chase Freedom Unlimited ($200 sign-up bonus and 1.5 per dollar spent). My household spends $5k/month outside of mortgage. If I just charged all our expenses on that one card the whole year that's about 90k Chase ultimate reward points (worth about a little over a grand in travel) by doing absolutely nothing!

It really depends on the cards. But most we do close so that we can get the same bonus 24 months later. We keep the cards that we've had forever in order to maintain our credit history but if a card has an annual fee and no good benefits beyond the bonus then we will close.

The next question is: What happens when you hit 'the end'? Like, say CreditCardX gives you the 70,000 miles. Well, you got the card, you got the miles...then, the card is 'useless' to you now right? How many times can you do this until you get stuck?

Great. Video! Just one question. When I finish paying off the card in 3 months and then rinse and repeat would there be other new cards available besides the ones I've choose already? What if the same ones are still there would I be able to reapply for the same ones?
@OurRichJourney
@OurRichJourney 5 жыл бұрын
Great question! Most cards allow you to re-apply and get the same bonus after 24 months. All the Chase cards allow this. Some allow you to apply after a year or less. And other the bonus is once in a lifetime. Check with the card company. Our plan has cards on cycle. There are a lot of cards with bonuses so you'll have plenty of options.

Hi There! Thanks for these great videos! When you say "rinse and repeat" for credit card churn, do you mean that we should close out a travel rewards card before going to get another? Also, do inactive credit cards negatively impact your credit score?
@AskChevelle
@AskChevelle 4 жыл бұрын
They wrote this to another comment a year ago. Hope that it answers your question.
