We don’t homeschool but we are kindred spirits when it comes to books and I love to watch homeschool curriculum/channels because they have the best book lists and ideas for kids! There are so many on this list that I don’t have that are going into my wishlist now.

We are doing a combo of Torchlight and BYL next year and we’re so excited! Thanks for doing this walkthrough - it reminded me that I still have some printing to do. 🙄🙂

@@OurWildWay Which parts of BYL do you like and which parts of Torchlight do you like best? I've been torn between the two and I'm really not sure what to do. I ended up getting B&R level 2 for science for a coherent nature/science study and MathUSee for math. But I'm really struggling to settle on what to choose for History/Literature as a new-ish homeschooler.

Thank you so much for this video, I had not heard of Torchlight prior to this and almost didn't watch when I saw Level 1, however, I am so glad that I did. Although my son will be 11 next year this looks like something he would love. We are finishing US History this year and when we have tried Ancients in the past he was bored and it was a struggle. I feel very drawn to literature based curriculums but also wanted a more secular view and more interaction...this seems to fit what I am looking for! Hopefully it won't be too basic for him! Thanks for sharing!

Im doing it with my daughter who is 10. We will be doing her level math and language arts. We will also be adding in a bunch of fun extras! It can easy be worked up.

How did you end up liking this? I am considering getting level 2 next year. Either torchlight, build your library again, or just curiosity chronicles and using all of the extra resources they recommend. What are you doing this year?

Krystal Ortega that is definitely how n my to do list. Lately we have been so it of wack. I’m working really hard to get back in a good rhythm. Right now we are just doing what we can when we can.

We we have taken a bit of a break. We always loose steam around Halloween and pick up again after the new year. I feel like I mostly use this curriculum as a booklist, as the subjects are a bit disjointed. Science I have left off all together and we BSFU instead and mystery science. I do love the booklist, but as a full curriculum it feels a little rough.

Hey, I am considering using this for my second grader and pre k. Can you tell me what the recommendations they give for Math and Reading & Writing programs? Did you use them or did you use different ones? If, so which ones? I love your videos!

Jackie PlantMorris in the curriculum she recommends Logic Of English for language arts/ reading and Right Start Math. Neither of those programs worked out for us. They are super in depth. We use All About Reading, Bravewriter, and Math U See. It’s taken a lot of trial and error, but that’s what seems to work well for us.

So, as the parent, am I supposed to be reading all these books with my son? He can’t read chapter books just yet. There seems like so much to read. Is that mainly what I’m doing all day? 😓 I’m so overwhelmed

My child will essentially be starting on level 1 (1st grade), I don't want to start on level K but I'm sad because he'll miss the "around the world" aspect of it. :(

Now that you are a few months in with this curriculum what do you think? We are using byl and I'm intrigued by this curriculum, but happy with byl too...

Katherine Trumbauer after taking a bit of a break we are back in it full swing. I really do like the curriculum. The book list is wonderful. We don’t necessarily follow along with the literature books, and we don’t do the writing project or the vocabulary sheets. We use Bravewriter for all of that. Build you library and torchlight are both excellent curriculums. I own both and pull from each. They are similar but at the same time style wise they are very different. Overall it’s a well laid out schedule that flows very well with beautiful books that align with our values.

We're still working through level 1, took me longer than expected to slowly gather the books (+ I can't read as much as scheduled with two littles around). Are you planning on using level 2?

its taken me a while too. We are slowly working through it. Hopefully we finish by fall and can move on to level 2, but really we are just using it for history.

I just wanted to say thank you for showing grade 1 and k for Torchlight. I have found them really insightful comparing it to BYL. I was just curious have you ever used BYL?

I really wish there was something like Torchlight without evolution. Some of us appreciate and need the inclusion and study of the culture, history and arts of the whole world but believe in Creation.

Esmeralda Ramírez it would be super easy to leave out the science portion and add your own if that was what you wanted. There are not many books that go Into evolution in the curriculum. It is a fully secular curriculum though, so it may not be a great fit.

Really? Like... I see Oak Meadow 6 grade goes over Sumerians as the first ancient civilization. I was soooo excited to see that and Incas and Mayas. Also, TRISMS is amazing! But that is almost highschool. I know Sonlight says it's more inclusive. But going over their list I see that they had to come up with an "Eastern Hemisphere" for a reason. I kind of would prefer a neutral faith History based because of political reasons. I need truth! LOL!

Oak meadow is a secular curriculum. I dont know anything about creation based curriculum other than you have a lot of options.
