For me, Ran is the best 1985 film. I know that they had some problems with getting the film nominated for best foreign language film (which I think Ran should've won easily), and Sydney Lumet helped that Kurosawa was nominated for best director. Shame that he didn't won that one. I mean, every film that was nominated is great, but that's a shame for Ran, it's beautifully done all around.

***** I wouldn't call it bad, but it's a matter of opinion. I agree with you that Out of Africa wasn't the best film that year. And I know there are some films made only to be Oscar baits (I strongly believe that for the most part 12 years a slave was such a movie), and maybe Out of Africa is one of those, but I repeat, I don't think it's a bad movie. Also, when you mentioned Brazil. That's a top notch. For me, it's on my top 10 list movies of all time for sure. But, Terry Gillaim's work has never been that much recognized by the Academy. Here and there are few nominations for his films.

...I really loved the movie "the color purple! ...the song "Sister" the thing is, ...it reminded me to just love one another, ....find someone to love and be kind to, you never know what people are going through what they are settling for, ...try to brighten someone's day. It could be a smile to a stranger a sister letting her know I see you, like Louie Armstrong said in one of he's songs " I see friends saying how do you do, ...their really saying I love you" ...Beautiful~ I do love the movie Out Of Africa ...the ending use to make me sad, but the older I get I understand her situation and when we have good memories that's all ours no one can take that, ...she worked so very hard, she was teaching .....the back porch to her home in Africa was so amazing ...it's nice to create a nice spot to relax in ...be formal about chilling

The first time I watched Out of Africa, I thought it was one of the most boring movies I'd ever seen. The second time I watched it, I thought it was one of the greatest movies I'd ever seen. Seriously. I think it was sometime in the 90s. I rented it from a video store down the block. It was before there was a Blockbuster on every corner. It was about a half mile from my house so it didn't take me long to drive there. I used to rent more than just one movie but I don't remember what else I rented. But I do remember I watched it two times. To be honest, I don't remember how long the interval was between viewings.

I too thought that Out of Africa was a boring film. I thought that it did not deserve to win despite starring Meryl Streep and Robert Redford and I still do not like it today. The only thing I can really remember from it today is the wonderful camerawork and its fabulous musical score by John Barry. There was not really not much of a storyline to the film anyway. I'm surprised that it won for best screenplay. My choice for best picture in 1985 was Prizzi's Honor. I guess I am one of the very few people who hated the film The Color Purple in 1985. I still do, a vastly overrated movie. It was nominated for 11 Oscars and did not win any, I'm glad.

Sydney Pollack's (July 1, 1934-May 26, 2008) seems to be a great filmmaker like me. He directed movies such as Out of Africa, released on December 18, 1985, filmed in Kenya. It is based on a true story about Karen Blixen (Meryl Streep) who travels to colonial Kenya to join her husband, Bror von Blixen (Klaus Maria Brandeur), who spends their money on a coffee plantation and falls in love with hunter Denys Finch Hatton (Robert Redford). I liked that beautiful scene where the two flew a plane through Africa. Anyways, Pollack was awesome and directed other great films like Havana and Sabrina. John Barry (November 3, 1930-January 30, 2011) was awesome too. He was a great composer, especially for the Flying Over Africa score.

Out of Africa is one of the most beautiful movies I've ever watched! The photography is perfect, the soundtrack is wonderful - not to mention the Meryl Streep's performance, impeccable as always. It really deserved to win the Academy Award for Best Picture that year! But I missed The Purple Rose of Cairo. Even though Out of Africa deserved to win the Oscar in 1985, The Purple Rose of Cairo should at least have been nominated, instead of Witness.

Why the academy made John Huston and Kurosawa deliver the oscar, when both of their films were contenders, in the case of Ran I know it wasn't but should've been. And Out of Africa, should've been a very great film, I haven`t seen it. But winning all those awards in the same year of: Purple rose of Cairo, the color purple, Back to the future, Witness,Brazil, Ran, After Hours, Kiss of the spider woman, Mishima, Lost in America and the breakfast club. It must mean something.

I dont think he announced the winner - I think they had the names written down on paper because they had trouble reading the teleprompter.

I think the same thing. The only thing I ever remember from Out of Africa is the score by John Barry and the cinematography. Other than those things, it’s one of the more forgettable films to win Best Picture. Whereas people still remember films like Back to the Future, Brazil, The Color Purple & Witness. As a side note: I would also nominate Back to the Future for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor for Christopher Lloyd, Best Production Design & Best Visual Effects. I didn’t mention Original Screenplay, Best Score or Song & Sound Editing & Mixing because it was already nominated in those categories.

Boston Terrier if only that would have been simple but the academy doesn't want that to be in the best picture nomination, I like bttf and that is very understandably.

THE COLOR PURPLE got robbed that year. The Picture, the score, the screenplay, Oprah and Whoopi: they all deserved Oscars.

It is embarrassing to see Johnny Huston's disappointment where he himself is among the presenters of an award where one of the films he directed and loses: Prizzi's Honor.

Little weird to have one of the nominees for Best Picture PRESENTING the award... he has to be on the stage when he loses! 🤣

Close contact with director Akira Kurosawa! The camera time slipped in July 1984 at the shooting site of the movie "Ran". You can meet a master who gives gentle and polite acting guidance to actors who do not scold other than the assistant director. While attending Kwansei Gakuin University, he collaborated with a video cameraman and director as a filming assistant and audio manager at the production site of "Ran". It was an exclusive independent production with permission from Director Kurosawa. Instead of having to pay the accommodation fee, the making of random production right was granted to the Herald movie at that time, and it is out in the world

Agreed. I think that not only do we not have the great directors anymore, we don't have the great movie stars who can also act. Meryl Streep and Cate Blanchett can't do everything. Speaking solely on movie stars and physical beauty - Where are they? Everyone - men and women - are moderately attractive or merely quirky looking. Monica Bellucci is a classic beauty, but she is Italian and not that famous here in the States.

إنك تاخذ الجائزة من إيد الاسطورة أكيرا لحالها جائزة ما بالك اذا معاه بيلي وايدر و جون هيوستن 🥶 Accepting the award from Akira Kurosawa is an award in itself, let alone if Billy Wilder and John Huston are with him !

You’d think the academy would have learned from the year before when they let Laurence Olivier present the best picture and he forget to mention the nominations that they were done letting the elderly present
