I had to set the top of my shoe 1/8” under the boat to eliminate cavitation and slipping on take off. It sprays a bit but doesn’t seem to limit my top speed. 25 merc 4 stroke 1448 lowe and it runs 25mph wide open 22mph 3/4 throttle with a load. I tried it level with the bottom and still sucked air. Can’t figure out why

Hi Dennis, your channel has been awesome resource, much appreciated. I am looking to setup a drift/jet boat for fly fishing and I managed to stumble upon a used deal for 1854 SeaArk. Just wanted your thoughts on motor hp size and wether you think this would be a nice platform? Was looking for a 1660 with pods, but this seems like it would plane with less HP and still draft shallow with the extra 2ft displacement in a 18ft hull.

Man I wish I had a definite answer for you. You couldn't go wrong with the 80 mercury jet. A 40 jet would push it if the boat was bare minimum. I really don't have lot of experience with a lot of set ups. I love my set up and it works well for my needs.

I'm not sure on the actual names, but almost any dealer in Missouri will have those parts. Black River, Current River Marine to name a few.

I have to install a jack plate. That's going to take me 4"off the transom plus the estimated 2"already off the transom. So 1 1/2" above the bottom of the boat? My boat is a War Eagle 1652 if that makes a difference and my motor is a 20hp mercury. I'd prefer bigger, but I work with what I have.I'm also installing a jet doctor whale tail

Cool video, so tell me about these jet motor, the motor still needs petrol or gas as you yanks call it to run right? I've been checking out the best electric motor but maybe I should be investing in a jet motor if there clean running?? Any feedback w about them and where to buy would be awesome cheers guys?
@DennisBohannan
@DennisBohannan 3 жыл бұрын
Well we call it gas down here in Texas, and we also call anyone north of the Texas border a Yankee. Haha. These are 4 stroke and are as clean as they sell in a combustible engine. Any mercury dealer should be able to get them, but most still go thru Missouri to purchase. Best prices.
@BrickField88
@BrickField88 4 жыл бұрын
What if you have a semi mod v? Do you think that would negatively effect jet performance? I have a tracker grizzly 1448 and a 25hp Mercury jet and I think the dealer installed the jet too low. I cant get the motor to plane unless I jack the motor up but then I just shoot 50 percent of the jet stream straight into the air.
@DennisBohannan
@DennisBohannan 4 жыл бұрын
Should not effect the boat. Plenty of folks run the mod v. Even with the mod v your motor should still sit close to where mine is in the video.

I’m leaning towards a 1656 Havoc DB. Is deleting the center rib at the back absolutely necessary? The river rat is a completely flat bottom and read that you don’t want that. What’s your thoughts ?
@DennisBohannan
@DennisBohannan 3 жыл бұрын
I'd get the river rat over the DB. I have been in many of them. Not my first choice but really good boats and jets do good on them. Also the center rib is not a must unless it is a really big rib like I have seen on sea arks

awesome video man. Do you think you lose performance when you have a hydraulic jack plate on? In other words do you lose power when the foot is further away from the hull? i use mine to fine tune the hight and raise when i don't want it in the water at all..
@DennisBohannan
@DennisBohannan 3 жыл бұрын
I'm really just not sure. Never have ran one. I know some guys that do and they don't complain. I think in a straight line there is probably very little ill effect. When it come to ripping left and right having the intake further back would have an impact.

I really miss the stick. The reason for the change are. 1 the stick was awesome once you new it had time on it, but otherwise not anyone could just hop in a drive. 2 on the new boat I didn't want to do any fab work getting stick and hot foot mounted. 3 just more floor space with tiller.

Outboard jet vs outboard prop?
@cragon25
@cragon25 Жыл бұрын
Depends on where you’re boating. I know where these boats are built, most people take them on Current River and Black River. You have to have a jet outboard because of all of the shoals. Those rivers will eat up a prop. If you’re in deep rivers or a lake, prop motors are the way to go.
