Alvin, great info. I have an outboard I picked up at auction I might see if that place in Cali makes one for. I'm not really trying to get up on plane. Heck, I not even trying to go fast. I'm building a tiny pontoon overnighter out of cardboard, 2 part boat foam and fiberglass. Just something lightweight I can load in the back of the pickup and assemble near the ramp and launch. I don't really want much on it in terms of structure. I've found an inflatable tent that I want to use for camping on the water. I do want to make a shade awning and have some chair mounts that can click in/out of place for different configurations, a place to cook and a dometic cooler style refrigerator or just take a cooler....I dunno still thinking about that one but it'll have a solar panel on the awning for fridge, cook plate, tunes, fish finder and phone. I just don't need anything over 5-10 hp. I'm seeing some 6.5 HP outboard jets out of South America but the shipping is just as much as the motor. Do you know of any place that sells just the down shaft and lower unit so I can just go buy a lawn mower engine from harbor freight? That would be awesome. I called Texas Parks and Wildlife to ask them what would be the procedure for titles for a combination boat/trailer, as in the boat and trailer are one. I just originally wanted to make a boat with retractable wheels. After being shuffled around to different offices they have no clue how to make that happen. They don't seem to understand why someone would want to do that. I guess convenient isn't in their vocabulary. Neither is cost effectiveness. Minus the motor I could've built that boat for the price of the trailer alone....but noooo.....guvment....ugh. Any thoughts? P.S. this is a guy, I'm using my wife's account. Mine was deleted for loving the constitution too much. Cheers, Brian

Own a 25hp Mercury Jet attached to a 1648 Lowe Aura. Total weight is 580 lbs with full tank of gas. Light enough to dry launch off a 6 foot embankment and light enough to wench back up. No ramp needed. Runs 20 mph with just me (175 lbs) and gear down to a few inches of water. Can fish 3 comfortably in water 12 inches or more. Being able to dry launch and drag the boat to the water opens up areas most can never fish. In Ohio you are not trespassing if you are on navigable water. Has also seen it's share of ducks.

Alvin... I like your style! Sorry to bug you with a question that only I can probably answer, but here it is. I live in North Idaho. It's a land of deep mountain lakes and rivers, which run shallow in the summer. With my daughter just now turning 13, I have a sense of urgency to get on the water with her (first time boat owner here.) I'm soon to purchase a high quality inflatable (16') which is large enough to accommodate me, my wife, our daughter, and a dog. Plus, it fits my budget and is super versatile. I'm faced with a decision between a 30hp Mercury outboard prop and a 60/40 Mercury JET, both of which are rated for the vessel and provided as options by the manufacturer, who is based in Canada. With the help of people like you, I understand the primary differences, and am leaning towards the prop. In the back of my mind though, I see myself getting perhaps bored on a lake and wanting to explore up river (way up river.) I also feel more drawn towards the fast moving water of a river and like the idea of getting away from any congestion you might be more likely to find on a lake. Fishing is a thing, but not a primary interest. I'm just really wanting to be able to explore, observe and photograph wildlife, do some overnight camping, and without limits whether it be on a big lake, or a river. I'm sure a prop driven outboard will meet my needs 90% of the time. I'm just worried that I might have buyer's remorse if I don't get a JET for those other circumstances (i.e. shallows.) Cost is a factor too though. Any thoughts? Thanks in advance....

Great video. Low to mid speed control is another con. Once you back off the gas, you are at the mercy of momentum. Jets are not great for anything that requires idling or mid speed. For example, jets can be hard and inefficient to troll with. That’s why a lot of people in PNW will have a second small prop motor (“kicker”). Similarly, they aren’t the best for drifting/fishing and shifting in and out of gear. They have 2 modes -“ON” (wide open) or “OFF” idling to to prepare for going wide open.
@AlvinDedeauxFlyFishing3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Joe, so true about the "WFO" or nothing aspect of jets.

Also, I store my boat outside with a cover on it. I could store it inside if I wanted to but it would be a real pain. Greetings and thanks for the video information. I just thought of a crucial decision-making question. But first let me give you some entail of the weight set-up/distribution in the boat: It has a heavy (130 lb give or take) 25 Horsepower Mercury Jet drive 2-Stroke Outboard, AGM Gel Optimum Bluetop cranking battery, and (185 lb) me in the back of the jon boat The front has a 55 lb thrust Motorguide (about 30+ lbs) trolling motor, two heavy Duracell deep cycle batteries, a 5.5 gallon fuel tank, a couple of anchors (37 lbs total ), etc. (And eventually I may add front and rear decking) I thought to put Nauticus trim tabs on my 14 foot jon boat to help it come on plane even better. But if I install the trim tabs, will the stern/transom be raised too high out of water and cause too much air to get sucked in the intake of the jet drive?? The white caps/big chop I endured last night coming across the main lake doing 19 mph made me think about this!!😆😅

What brand of grease do you recommend for greasing the impeller?
@AlvinDedeauxFlyFishing3 жыл бұрын
Got this from the outboard jets website - Can you use any other grease besides Lubriplate 630 AA and why do you recommend against using a lever type grease gun? Any grease of the same consistency (NLGI 2) which is water resistant should do the job. The main thing is to keep grease in the bearing cavity and water out. We prefer a hand held jiffy lube since it does not create high pressure. If a cartridge type lever gun is used, it should be pumped gently! Excessive pressure will invert the rubber seal lips and seals will no longer keep water out.

It is pretty easy to take the foot off and get it out that way. I have just left them in there, no problems so far, but that's probably not the best thing to do.

@@AlvinDedeauxFlyFishing good to know and thanks for the heads up. I figured it would be okay as rocks and what not get in there naturally but this was a larger then usual.

I have run my jet with a rock wedged between the exhaust and jet nozzle without any problems. You lose efficiency though which could mean the difference between getting on plane in a tight spot or vaccuming the bottom and getting stuck.

Can you swap lower units between prop and jet drives easily/quickly?
@AlvinDedeauxFlyFishing3 жыл бұрын
It's not that big of a deal to swap the lower units. The hard part is that you need to raise the engine around 5" to get the jet pump at the right height. The jet drive is very finicky when it comes to where it sits in relation the bottom of the hull. 1/4 of an inch can make a big difference in performance.

If you plan ahead when buying a boat/motor combo it’s easy. If you buy a motor with a shorter shaft and a jet pump, you can use a spacer called a bay kit to drop the prop lower unit down to the proper depth. If you already have a prop lower unit with the appropriate length shaft and want to swap to a pump you have to find a way to raise the motor up about 5” like a jack plate or other means.

Alvin, what's your rough MPH when you're running a 60/40 jet? I'm barely getting over 20 MPH in my 16' Mod-V riveted Jon boat. Do I need to be concerned?

Very good your video. I was in doubt about buying a 25 hp jet or not. The issue that still inclines me to buy would be safety for bathers, as I'm going to use the boat on beaches. Do you find this question relevant? Hugs

Yes, that is an addition safety factor that people like about jet engines.
