You can see the exact moment he realizes something is off shortly after Wheeler mentions Eidolon of the Great Revels. It's a little after that, that he asks if it's good into eggs.

Serge's comment about 1 MV vs 2 MV makes sense when you consider that with 3 mana you can cast three 1 MV spells, but only one 2 MV spell

"This is a 4 mana 5/5 with trample, why does it have extra abilities! What power creep" minutes later "I'm pretty medium on this 4 mana 6/5 with trample, I don't know if the extra abilities really make it worthwhile, but it's not embarrassing" Really showing how much a situational bonus ability will taint the evaluation of a card, even by seasoned players.

Making 2 food and having huge card selection on attack is so much more impactful than a bonus power. Yes the 6/5 for 4 with upsides is pushed and will win games just on the nature of being big, but in comparison to the efficiency of other threats and removal in the format just being big isn’t as powerful.

The classic examples I think of are the Invokers, fairly costed creatures by themselves with absurdly expensive activated abilities. People see abilities that might not come up and think the whole card is bad.

@@ZephyrKelsey Their point is that Serge and Ben were talking as if the stats alone for the Farmer would be enough, that the 2 foods and card selection wouldn't need to be there to make it great.

Yes but you do get the food with no hoops to jump through apposed to having to have a specific land type in play so it gains flash, bit of a difference on power levels of abilities as well tbh

35:34 Having the new deserts is technically a wincon if you get the fastbond + crucible + courser combo, but if you’re at that point I’m not sure how much that matters

Something I wish they’d mentioned is that the storm wizard can cut your storm requirement in half if your tendrils is your next spell

Oh yeah! To Tendrils them from 20, Crackling Spellslinger is basically four spells in a trenchcoat. To Grapeshot, it's a nine-in-one! Neat.

Magda giving you a treasure off of criming means that stuff like Gitaxian Probe is technically ramp. If it’s not in blue moon I will be surprised.

The reason that 2 mana feel like 2.5 is that you spend 2 on turn 2 *and* can't cast it on turn 1, so sometimes it also wastes a 3rd mana

I get the feeling Serge thought Magebane Lizard pinged your opponent when you cast spells and then realised half-way through that it isn't for the spellslinger deck (comparison to Thing in the Ice) and pivoted to realising it's for playing against the spellslinging deck.

For me Colossal rattlewurm is the exact opposite of how they talked about it: I don't care about the body, I just think about looping life from the loam and still being able to cast a rampant growth I dredged into the yard

Railway Brawler into Stingerback Terror makes it a 14/14 Railway Brawler into Questing Beast makes it an 8/8 Railway Brawler is insane.

Personally, I think Railway brawler works better with cards like the Hydra, Krasus or Walking Ballista. The X/X's that come in with tokens? If you plot it you can combined the Brawler with an X/X and Effectivly double your tokens, On a Haste minion, that feels like a finisher.

Man… rattlewurm makes me want to sell my collection and y’all are just like “yeh. It’s aight” ☹️… 😂 All these cards are pretty crazy compared to idk 10 years ago or whatever, but that Tyrant comparison to Thragtusk had me like “huh 🤔 that really is just hyper-tusk” (and also “jeezus 👀”)

Tyrant also costs 2 more than Thragtusk. Thragtusk always felt more like the upper end of midrange while 6+ mana is when you get into "ramp target" level cards, so I wouldn't really compare them 1 to 1.

Would love to see at the end of these episodes a wrap at the end of the episode that acts like a kind of award. Each host having their own choices. Selections like 'Best card' is easy, but i'd much prefer to see 'card that has the most impact on an existing / emerging archetype' 'card i'm most excited to play' 'most likely to over/under perform', that sort of thing. I really miss those old discussion episodes, and while we get plenty of it baked into these, i'd love to see a bit more of it. Might also allow for time allocation for those cards our beloved hosts want to wax lyrical on from each set.

The moment of hesitation around Magebane Lizard's name reminded me of back when Megantic Sliver was the launch promo for M14 and I referred to it as Magnetic Sliver (because of course it is, why would any sliver not want the +3/+3 buff?). This one guy was not having it and kept correcting me.

No it’s not. Varmints are small, beasts *should* be large. Mountain Lions are beasts not varmints, squirrels are varmints not beasts. Arboreal Grazer should be a varmint.

It's not like Beast has been a relevant type in years. Creature types also exist for flavor in addition to sometimes being for mechanical synergy.

Question for Crackling Spellslinger: What happens if a card has multiple instances of storm?

They both trigger separately. In effect, it will put on the stack N copies, then N other copies, N being the number of previous spells. The copies do not add to storm. The N first resolve before the second batch is put on the stack.
