Celebrating the 30th anniversary of one of the best and most influential games around and it's legacy. Happy Birthday Outrun!

Also, Howard Casto's been busy making further improvements to the PC version of Coast 2 Coast. He's created a course editor, allowing you to make either branched or continuous courses made up of any combination of the original 15 Outrun 2 or SP stages in either their normal or reversed mode. This also includes the the dusk and sunset Palm Beach and Sunny Beach stages that are normally only available in the game's time attack mode. Absolutely loved Turbo Out Run in the arcades... If you've never experienced being thrown about in any of SEGA's hydraulic arcade cabinets, you've not experienced SEGA......great times, dearly missed..... (1985-1992)

Outrun 3 would be awesome, even without the Ferrari license. Trouble is though, I don't know if modern Sega can be trusted not to balls it up like they did with the new arcade Daytona USA game.

MrThunderwing I haven't played Daytona 3 yet. But they did a fantastic job on Outrun 2. I remember being really amazed bu it when I got it on the original Xbox. Back then I didn't think Sega could recapture the magic of the original 86 Outrun, but they somehow managed to with a great new take on the game.

i have two ones I'd think would go pretty well as a. prequel outrun 3:world tour or outrun circuit which would be a sort of gran prix version of normal outrun but on race tracks and with ferraris race and road cars playable even the F1. cars and of course you could drift on both games.

Have you done SEGA's Space Harrier, which turned 30 last year? It's mainly thanks to that game alone, hydraulic arcade version, that got me into SEGA games.... SEGA will always be Arcade Masters... excellent trip down memory lane. Sunbed!!!

I was never really into Space Harrier in quite the same way I was with Outrun and Afterburner. I did have it on the Sega Master System and got a lot of fun out it though. But yeah, it's a very significant game in Sega history and you could argue that without Space Harrier, there very well could have been no Outrun or Afterburner.

My favorite OutRun games has got to be OutRun 2 for Xbox and OutRun 2006 Coast 2 Coast for PC. It's kind of hard driving with a 2-speed MT in a 2D road, like the first game. For the PC version of Coast 2 Coast, I just put in in my Steam library, and I play it with a Steam controller!

Great video! I am a massive fan of the OutRun franchise, so I really enjoyed this video. :-) When it comes to OutRun 2 SP, the best looking port is by far OutRun Online Arcade. For some reason the Xbox 360 version looks slightly better than the PS3 version as the colours look a lot more vibrant (you can very easily notice this in National Park) and the upscalling looks sharper. I keep meaning to make a comparison video to show this. Also just like the Japanese PS2 port, OutRun Online Arcade has a lot of the animations added back in, such as the rocket taking off at the end of Milky Way (like you mentioned), which was a shame to see removed from OutRun 2006. One thing you did forget to mention about OutRun 2006 was that the scoring system in OutRun mode is slightly different. In the arcade version (OutRun 2 SP), the European PSP version of OutRun 2006 and OutRun Online Arcade, when passing a normal car, you normally get 1500 points. This is then doubled if you slipstreamed it or halfed if you touched it. Where as in every other version OutRun 2006 and the Japanese PS2 version of OutRun 2 SP, that score is halfed to 750, which yet again is either doubled or halfed depending on how you pass it. Of course the best port for the original OutRun has got to be the Japanese version for the Sega Saturn. Turbo OutRun and OutRunners are best to be played on MAME or on the actual arcade machine as I am not a big fan of the ports for those games. Though I do like the way the Mega Drive/Genesis makes the soundtracks turn out. As for the modern versions of OutRun 2, it's either got to be the original Xbox version of OutRun 2 or OutRun Online Arcade (PS3/X360). Though I do prefer the PS3 version to the Xbox 360 version as the Microsoft Force Feedback wheel (the official one Microsoft came out with about a decade ago) feels more like a toy compared to the much higher end Logitech wheels you can get for the PS3. I have still yet to experiment with Howard Casto's mod and Cannonball, and will have fun doing so! :-)

You've learnt me some stuff there. I didn't know about the different scoring system between the different versions of 2006 and SP. I did find out about the missing course animations getting added back in to Outrun Online Arcade a little while after I made this video - It's weird that I'd owned Outrun Online Arcade for all that time and only noticed that fairly recently. I didn't know that the 360 version had slightly better visuals than the PS3 though. I do own a 360 but I got it (secondhand) years after Outrun Online Arcade had been de-listed, so I guess I'll never be able to try it for myself. You should defo do a PS3 Vs 360 head-to-head video, I'd certainly be interested in watching it.

You're the same age as my Brother! He used to take me to play the Arcades. He was really good at Outrun whilst i just kept crashing and never made it past Stage 3!!! Outrun and Double Dragon took most of our pocket money back in the late 80's.

Great vid dude; just came up in my recommendations to watch. Just as an FYI the 60fps cheat is in the PAL OutRun, the only big difference is the missing remixed soundtrack presumably due to disc space. To get it, you go to the options screen and where it says something like ‘version’ (the option that lets you swap between old and new versions of the game) - just hold A and C down and then cycle across and instead of just old and new versions there should be smooth mode for both versions too. Weird how it was a cheat. Did you know there’s also a cheat to make it say ‘insert coin’ and that enables the arcade attract sequence.

Great video, but you really missed one particular mark by not using the Ryo Hazuki DLC character in Sonic & All Star Racing Transformed, as he's riding on an OutRun Arcade cabinet as his vehicle.

Cheers. My favourites in the series are Outrun 2 and Coast 2 Coast. Coast 2 Coast has more content overall, but Outrun 2 has those awesome Scud Race and Daytona USA 2 bonus stages. The original Outrun would be a very close contender as well - it's still just as playable and fun as when I first played it in an arcade 30 years ago. Outrunners is pretty cool too, particularly in multi-player.

Funnily enough, I just re-watched this myself yesterday for the first time in years. This was actually one of the first YT game docco type things I ever did and looking at it now with my critically appraising eye there's definitely a few things I would like to go back and improve a bit. You can. Each version of MAME opens up as a two player cabinet, so I've previously linked up two PCs with one version of MAME on each to equal a four player set-up.

I'm using a Logitech DFGT. It doesn't break the bank, feels good and sturdy and also has pretty decent force feedback. I've also got a Thrustmaster Ferrari GT Experience Racing Wheel 3-in-1 which is even more budget friendly, but doesn't have any FFB (although it does rumble when you crash into stuff). Both work on both my PC and PS3.

It's pretty easy to find a version for PC via 'other means' now. I've got two legit downloadable copies on 2 of my PCs, but I needed a third for my barcade so I could incorporate it into my network. I've heard the Xbox 360 version has become quite expensive. Lucky I bought a second copy for system link when I did!
