Toyota Technician here, I’ve done a 22 and now am waiting on the parts for a 23. I hope and pray that Toyota sends in a long block for affected trucks. These engines are very complex with vast amounts of cooling passages and oil passages. Taking one apart is like peeling a huge onion. I used to dislike rebuilding the 5.7s but this one is in its own league…

A long block replacement would be the best for both the customer and the dealer. The solution is not really that hard to figure out. An oil analysis on all affected engines that have not fail up to this point would be a good place to start. This would give Toyota a reasonable view into how many engine they will need to address.

There not going to fix it. They are going to test the fluid if they see nothing they will say your fine. They may want you to sign something too say they ok'd it. I hope I'm wrong but that's what it's looking like. Toyota is worth over 200 billion. To replace all engines to be absolutely safe, 8 billion? Alot of money but it will salvage toyota's reputation. How toyota responds to this will change the company forever.

My guess is the fix for the Toyota Tundra engine will be an oil analysis to determine the amount of bearing wear metal in the oil. If excessive by Toyota's standards an engine will be replaced. This would be the cheapest and most efficient way to deal with the problem engines. The rest of the Tundra's that pass the oil analysis test will probably be given an extended warranty. This is just IMHO.

Toyota is in a serious pickle with this one. If they don't replace engines proactively, I'm guessing a class action will follow. If they don't expand the recall to hybrids/2024s, a class action will follow. Meanwhile, it's tough to believe it's debris but...that's all they've given us so far. Like you mentioned, they are probably going to just warranty these engines to give folks piece of mind. Personally, I wouldn't touch a new Tundra for at least a year or two...it's amazing to me how many people are still buying them new while aware of the recall. I guess their risk tolerance is higher than mine. I think Toyota had one of their best Tundra sales months in May of this year, even though a lot of folks knew about the recall. Pretty weird.
@TRDJon
@TRDJon 18 күн бұрын
I personally feel that many are going to them currently due to very good incentives and also many regions offering a 0% or a tad higher interest rate. Those buying may not care to have the truck for a while or like you said, may just want to roll the dice. Regardless, this stinks and I really hope it isn’t all 3rd gens. But if it is then it is. It will be a major learning experience for sure for the brand. Hopefully we get some better clarity soon.

No sense in proactively replacing an engine that hasn't had issues. Just because 100k engines were recalled doesn't mean 100k engines are going to fail. Heck, even if the failure rate hit 10% that would be catastrophic. People need to stop panicking about this and use some common sense and logic. EDIT: 830 out of the 102,000 have actually failed. 0.8%. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/l5-Jhcqa0dCchps.htmlsi=aYnBop7DANoMn3A3

I guess they are going on toyota's word that this is only affecting 22-23 MY. Its too soon to say how many later model years will actually be affected by this though. So far we still have less than 100 of these vehicles that actually experienced these failures? Many more vehicles out there have passed the threshold at which a majority of the failures have occurred at. We don't have enough data to be saying definitively how many engines will fail. This issue, while severe in nature, hasnt affected enough vehicles i think to be considered systematic
@TheCarGuyOnline
@TheCarGuyOnline 18 күн бұрын
@@YerBoyTroy No it's not less than 100. If you read the recall notice from Toyota they have, so far, almost 1,000 warranty claims on engines. This likely does not include all of them and probably doesn't include the lemon law buybacks in this number. Time will tell if it's really a debris issue or not, it probably is, but 2024s are affected as well. Again, I don't think you can say (yet) that it's 100% a debris issue, or an engineering issue, time will tell the truth....eventually.

Chances are...it's not included in the vehicles with the issues...but to be sure...I decided to lease it! No difference between buying and leasing? Lets break it down for you. 1. I dont keep trucks for over 2 - 2 1/2 years. Never have. Why buy a truck that I don't plan to keep past the bumper-to-bumper warranty?? 2. The payments are less expensive than a retail payment on 72 mos. for a MUCH nice truck. 3. It's a closed end lease. If the value of this Tundra TANKS due to market issues...I have a guaranteed value at the end. If its value is $15,000 - $20,000 less at the end than its stated residual...I DON'T TAKE THE HIT! If I retailed it...I may be hung in it for a long time with a higher payment. Upside down I would be for sure if the unit tanks in value due to bad press.. With the lease, I get to enjoy the Tundra without ANY worries. If this all blows over...and the values that Tundra normally enjoys..maintains it's exceptional status..then I might very well be in an equity position. Doubt it at this juncture...but it's possible. If not...I walk away with a new Tundra...or whatever I want at that time. 4. I get a rental car at no cost due to the Toyoguard for three years. You think that Toyota is going to tell their owners to walk or rent a car at their own expense? Really??? Also CHAD...I have been in the automotive business for 42 years. GSM, Finance, Fleet positions. I highly doubt that ANYONE I've worked with or given advice to would call me clueless. If you plan on keeping a vehicle longer than the term of your finance contract...5-6-7 years...then BUY IT! I've never kept a truck or vehicle longer than 2-3 years at most. I always want the newest and the bestest I can afford. If you want to be car payment free..then buy it and deal with it, All I have to do is get oil changes and tire rotations...which are free! By the way..there are better ways of responding to a post than with vitriol. You need to learn to communicate a bit better than you have shown. It's kind of sad. Be kind..be concerned..and ask a question..before you respond to someone that has 1000% more knowledge than you will EVER hope to have. Hopefully I have informed you as to why I made my decision!

@@philroberts6274 Nice little speech but I have been in the auto business longer than you Goober. Look it up. If you are so informed about leasing and buying for the past 42 years you would know the ONLY real advantage of a lease was not tying up capital by putting 20% down by buying as a lease didn't require a down payment---you just paid for tags and drove off the lot. Now a lease they want a couple grand down which is bullshit....there is no such thing as a down payment on a lease as it defeats the point.....or at least that is the way it is supposed to work. Now they get suckers put money down, might as well buy the thing. Leasing and buying costs are the same if you trade every 3 years, only advantage now in lease is for tax purposes if you have a business. The fact you got lucky by not having to sell that lemon Tundra is an exception and you know it....not like you had that figured out before you got it. Is that vitriol enough for you??

My 2022 SR5 premium has been recalled. I try not to drive it. Not because it is having issues, but because i dont want any. I have 17k miles on it currently. It has been an awesome truck so far. I got my first oil change at 5k miles. I hope to hear something soon. I am fortunately working from home so I can get by using my hylander for going places. I am also part of the Toyota intersection. I do every survey they send me. Im curious how opinions will change overall with regard to reliability as this was my reason for buying Toyota to begin with. I am not as upset as others are about this. To me, recalls happen with new generations. To be fair, this recall hasent impacted me directly. It is, however, unfortunate that is is the engine and not a smaller issue. Edit: Thanks as always for the informative video.

One of the reasons Toyota is outsourcing labor to America and Mexico is to cut costs. However, even in Japan, Toyota have cut back on inspections and other labor. today you only see one color dot on parts from an inspector, before you would see 2 different color marking, meaning the same part was inspected by 2 different inspectors. just in case you ever wondered what those color marking were.

If it blows you will have an accident on your carfax report and you have to eat that on resale value. It’s not a good feeling to have this situation over your head when you spent that amount of money. It’s happening to 2024 tundras that are just daily drivers not even hauling things. The most common way they’re blowing is simply downshifting to lower gears. Over 250,000 gen 3s! There’s no flex in having these gen 3s

As of June 19, 2024, there have been several notable automotive recalls announced by major manufacturers. Here are some of the most recent ones: Stellantis Recall: Stellantis has recalled over 1 million vehicles due to rearview camera software issues. The recall affects vehicles in the United States and Canada, including the 2021-2023 Chrysler Pacifica, with 235,423 units affected. The issue may cause the rearview camera image not to display, increasing the risk of a crash. The recall is expected to be fixed through a radio software update in Q3 2024. Ford Recall: Ford has recalled the most vehicles this year, with almost 500 recalls filed with U.S. regulators. The recall affects various models, including the 2020-2024 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 and 3500 pickup trucks and some GMC Sierra 2500 and 3500 pickups. Kia Recall: Kia has recalled 462,869 Telluride SUVs due to a stuck power seat slide knob that can cause the front seat’s motor to overheat, potentially causing a fire. The recall affects the 2020-2024 Telluride and has been the subject of several recalls in 2024. Tesla Recall: Tesla’s January 30 recall of almost 2.2 million vehicles is the largest of 2024. The recall affects essentially every Tesla on the road since 2012, including the Model S, Model 3, Model X, Model Y, and the Cybertruck. The issue is minor, but it’s worth noting that the recall is one of the largest in automotive history.

Hey TRD Jon. Thanks for all you report. Question as you just bought a new LC. One of the reasons I’ve had Toyota Trucks my whole driving life is the resale value. How can a 65k Tacoma hold its value like an older originally 40ish k Tacoma can? Do you agree that Toyota went over the top on pricing? I think the first edition LC is in the same boat 76k? It just can’t when a 1958 is 58k. The 1958 is going to be the bench mark of LC deprecation and they will hold their value as usual for Toyota. But the first edition is going to be in that same ballpark in 3 years but cost almost 20k more. I think the same will be for the Tacoma off road (benchmark for depreciation)and the 65k TRD Pro. I think Toyota went way high. Saw the stupid markups dealers were getting and jumped in. Thoughts? As always appreciate what you do.
