What started as a simple desire for a little more power in my bug zapper got carried away and I ended up building a racket of death.

I used to buy four of these at once ($2 a peice at Harbor Freight at the time) and take them all apart to scavenge the capacitors, then solder all four in parallel and put them all on one bugzapper. It didn't change the voltage but the amount of current gets quadrupled, it makes any insect essentially detonate on contact lol. Takes longer to charge between hits but ohh well, feeling your face get blasted by spider shrapnel is worth the delay🤣.

I love your creations and love how you overdo everything. I would say that this may be a little *too* overdone in terms of being practical. The issue I find with most bug zappers whether stationary or portable is lack of current, not voltage. For my stationary ones, it’s frustrating to see the grid clog up. Finally ordered an oldschool one that uses a standard transformer instead of the underpowered high frequency circuits found in so many cheap bug zappers. I saw another guy diy a crappy bug zapper with a microwave transformer. Now that was a sight to be seen & think that would be the perfect way to make a practical supercharged bug zapper!

I also upgraded my bug zapper. But it still works at the stock voltage of max 1300V measured. I slapped in 4 series 47µF electrolytic capacitors as storage and replaced the 3V with a 3.7V 18650. Then I upgraded the transistor inside and added an overheat protection. I made sure insulation was good so accidents with humans are unlikely (you would have to deliberately stick your finger into it and then it would only be the tip of the finger that gets damaged). Mine is still 95% the old form factor and now instead of slowly killing wasps over 3 minutes it now kills them instantly with a loud bang.

It's things like this that make me think my electrical engineering degree wasn't a bad choice. Electricity is so much fun to screw around with (IF YOU KNOW WHAT YOU'RE DOING) because most people are kinda mystified by it. Think the safe stuff is dangerous and do the dangerous stuff without second thought. It does mean that building a Tesla coil makes people think you're a Newton level genius. Great build btw

You can eliminate the mosfet by just using a NC 12V relay. They react the same as points and condenser in a distributor. Except that when the circuit closes, it opens itself again then closes. It does this about 50-60hz. Basically simulating AC
