What started as a simple desire for a better arc lighter got carried away and I ended up making the scariest device I've ever built.
In this video I tested a plasma lighter and attempted some modifications to it. I tried hooking it up to a voltage multiplier as well as raising the input voltage, but my results weren't that impressive. So, I turned to the sketchiest schematic I've ever come across, the "HFVTTC".
The HFVTTC is a circuit that operates sort of like a Tesla coil, but considerably more scary and with a flame like output. There is very little on this circuit in English, so it felt like a wild goose chase trying to figure out how they work and how to build one. Thankfully, the KZfaqrs Zilipoper and Teslista555 had well documented videos detailing their builds of the circuit, and I relied heavily on those clips to figure out how to bring my circuit to an operating state. I would like to give a big thank you to them. Be sure to check out their channels as they have a BUNCH of cool high voltage vids!!
Zilipoper: / zilipoper
Teslista555: / teslista555
Furthermore, I'd like to thank Vidduley for providing key information on this type of circuit. I was ripping my hair out trying to find English literature on this circuit, but it turns out most of the documentation is in the Russian language. A big thank you to him for this as well as the other info I've used from him in past videos!
Vidduley: / @vidduley
I built my torch circuit using the soviet GU-5B triode vacuum tube that I scored on eBay, and I used a bunch of soviet surplus doorknob capacitors in the build as well. The PSU transformer was a used pull from an old flashlamp pumped laser, and I built the PSU voltage doubler using chains of 10A10 diodes potted in wax.
The output electrodes turned out to be both tricky and interesting in this project. As the device melted through copper, steel and many other materials, it was hard finding something that wouldn't turn to a puddle on the output, but luckily graphite held up well enough for fairly long term use. I then added salts like cesium and lithium chlorides to the electrodes, as well as metals like magnesium and zinc.
It was a very fun project, but also quite involved. The RF emissions had to be shielded so I built a large copper Faraday cage for the project. This took a bunch of time, but it's worth not being hunted down by local hams in the area.

I’m guessing that when the magnesium burnt it made it super easy for the other stuff in the air besides oxygen (like nitrogen and argon as well as the stuff in the dust in the air) to start to ionize, creating those colors. The red could be caused by Oxygen, nitrogen causes green and yellow, argon causes blue and green. Just based on the mix of the air in the exact area of the coil it would cause those color changes. With the magnesium making it easier to ionize the air it would be more pronounced.

I love this device but I would have made ONE major design change and that is to configure the coil as a Hartley oscillator, that is put the current from the tube thru the cathode circuit rather than plate, that way the coil would be at a DC potential of ground and while one would still get a serious RF burn if they touched the plasma, it wouldn't conduct 3000 volts at some huge current through the body causing instant death.

But you see, that's much less fun
@VintageTechFan
@VintageTechFan 5 ай бұрын
I know what you mean, but the circuit used still is a Hartley. Just a common-cathode one instead of the more common, "classical" common-plate one. One way to make it safeR* (but requiring a better insulated heating transformer), would be to ground the plate and use a negative high voltage on the cathode. Like microwave ovens do for the magnetron. *Relative terms, is still f**king dangerous and should not be done.

People who do this kind of home science get called insane so many times in their lives, but the opposite could not be more true. The motivation to continue to work on more and more advanced projects, and the desire to not die or be hurt, leads to extremely level headed and calculating thought habits. It just looks like insane risk taking to the casual observer because they don't know all the background that went into the stunning display.

This is actually a huge oversight. The most likely explanation of why the tungsten didn't last is the thin tungsten with its high surface to volume ratio caused it to burn. This is why light bulbs burn out when they stop working and often times when you shake a burnt out bulb you can see the tungsten flapping around. Some part of the wire burnt off and became detached. This principle is demonstrated in the video itself when the steel wool burns but the steel rod melts. I guess because tungsten is known for its high melting point people forget that just like iron it burns too.

Just your average styropyro video: 1. Buys toy on eBay. "This is pathetic! It doesn't even have the potential to kill you instantly!" "Time for some upgrades." 2. Jank builds a mad science contraption out of ebay parts and sketchy homebuilt electronics components that could vaporize you if you look, smell, or breath in its general direction. "Ah, much better"
