Overcoming Depression and Anxiety | Being a Buddhist Monk | The Psychologist Monk Idan | Mindfulness
Hey Guys! Welcome and in today’s video Monk Idan is going to share how he overcome depression and anxiety being a Buddhist monk, who committed his entire life to overcoming despair, anxiety, and loneliness, which he has suffered from early childhood.

Monk Idan's goal is to pass down the knowledge, skills, and practices that have helped him deal with melancholy, anxiety, and other bad emotions.
Many people nowadays feel lost, even broken, as if life has no meaning for them. Worry, despair, and sadness sap vitality and destroy relationships all around the world. The Buddha's teachings, on the other hand, give ancient wisdom and practical compassion that, when actively applied to our lives, can completely transform our world, providing hope, purpose, light, and meaning to places where only pain and darkness previously existed.
Studying, practicing, and integrating the different approaches found in Buddhist teachings, such as meditation, can help people overcome anxiety and other mental health difficulties. Positive benefits are dependent on a variety of circumstances such as the level of anxiety, the amount and consistency of practice, and so on.
Anxiety affects everyone from time to time. It's just a fact of life. When faced with a major decision or challenges at home or at work, we may feel apprehensive. While we have little control over the future, we may improve our positive attitudes and reaction to our emotions to reduce worry and make us more robust in the face of adversity.
Meditation creates a solid link between our internal and exterior worlds. It stimulates the body and benefits all parts of the mind's conscious and subconscious layers.
Being a Monk in Buddhism is a lifestyle that involves the mind in almost all forms of practice. Buddhism is usually known as a spiritual tradition, but monkhood in Buddhism is also a lifestyle that encompasses the mind in almost all forms of daily activities. Buddhism is often referred to as the "science of the mind."
Buddhism encourages people to explore with their own minds to see what works best for them. The concept is that a person can obtain inner calm through this process known as mental training.Happiness, according to Buddhist doctrine, is the result of looking inside ourselves seeing the reality as it is without the labeling of our minds.

i over came my depression after diviorced. when i realised the nature of the world.. aka impermanence of all things , mental and physical. nothing last very long in life, even relationship. it took me 15 years to realise it. i read helpself books and all other religions but only when i encounter Buddhism impermanence and nature of life.. and noself or emptiness.

I’ve also suffered depression most of my life. I’m in my 50s now. I started meditation in the forest tradition about 10 years ago. I go on silent retreats. When Im on retreat I’m very happy but when I go home after a couple of weeks the gloominess returns. I’m better than I used to be but it hasn’t gone away completely. On anti depressants I feel fine but without them it’s hard to cope. I’d like to go on longer retreats perhaps but it’s expensive. Becoming a monk is an extreme measure. I’m not sure I could do that or that I want to. I don’t think I could cope with not being able to eat what I want when I want. Monks have to eat whatever is given and often it’s not healthy food.

Thank monk Idan, I am a lay person just at the beginning of learning. Thank you for sharing your mental health journey. I am struggling with depression and have been meditating for about 6 months a few times a day and visiting local temples. I was medicated for many years but over time I have been able to drop the pills. I am having a little tough time but with the help of the meditation I have been doing I feel like I am getting some space between me and the negative feelings. Thank you for inspiring me I will keep up my daily practice and I subbed to keep you close. 🙂

Thank you for uploading this, I need to find a way to endure life and live with myself. I don't try to numb myself with people, radical experience, mind altering substances or the like, and there is an intensifying emptiness in all things, which is the most horrible state of all existance to experience. I have tried to get away from this deeply depressive state, but I realize now that I am only making it persistent by resisting it. Meaninglessness is a state of life as is meaning, the more I try not to be depressed or use whatever in order to find meaning, it will slip away from me and feel even more depressed and meaningless. It's like a quicksand. I am finally trying to resolve this in not using anything exterior to avoid this emotion of complete futility and hopelessness. It is a void, but I must embrace it to be responsible.

Mannsy, there's a game called puzzle and survival. I played it for 2 years when I was extremely lonely and depressed, met some great people on there and they even traveled to London to meet up with me and others. We had fun on there as we all had loads in common. If going out meeting people is too much, then get talking on a game like that, it really helped me out. Hang in there mate things get better.

My stage 4 cancer treatment is not responding and they are giving me 2-3 months to live. I’ve been looking up other philosophies other than Christianity because it just doesn’t resonate with me. I really need to accept my fate by I am massively depressed and anxious. I’m so afraid of dying. I’m only 26 years old, why me? I’m sorry if I’m coming off as whining, I just really need comfort. How to ordain? I have spent six months in vipassana retreat (style of Goenka, Thailand and Mahasi Sayadaw) and am desiring more meditation and in a position to leave everything behind (family approves and no children). I found sustainable happiness of my heart can only be found in this practice, it is unsatisfactory for me to live in normal society where by objective standards I am successful (house, wife, career). I want to help myself so I can truly help others. I would like to become a novice and then ordain somewhere where there's a focus on meditation and explanations from theory are encouraged but not the main focus. I can of course also help around monastery. Currently work in IT. How does it work with visa? I am from Europe. What would be the best country and what monastery? Hopefully I will receive some guidance in a reply on this comment. ❤🙏

You can find plenty of Buddhist monastery in Europe. Look on Google maps and check for the ones with good reviews, you can always move to another if you don’t like the one you move to for some reasons. Of course you can check before going if you like the place and their style of teaching and living in the monastery. No need to overthink it, Good luck.

I have identified and would like to address a very pertinent issue that I have faced when dealing with so-called holy people in this country. I don't care how much any person sits, I don't care how much people feed the poor, I don't care how much people chant, I don't care who has psychic abilities, I don't care who can foretell the future, I don't care who is a shaman, I don't care who claims to be a mystic, I don't care what vegan diet people have, I don't care what New Age crap you have been spoonfed, and I don't care about any superficial happiness that people defend before anything at all costs. When it comes to advocating for and defending the civil rights of the mentally ill, the most sane, educated, civilized and compassionate among us become inhumane monsters. It's as simple as this. If anyone so much as opposes an established spiritual doctrine that is upheld by a community that claims to be worldly and wise, they are fed to the dogs if they have been cursed with a psychiatric diagnosis. Monks often think along the lines of: 'If you question my rule, it's jail, torture, criminalization, forced drugging, rape, beatings, mutilation, mockery, humiliation, ostracization, permanent brain damage, obesity, captivity, research subject status, forced labor and death in certain countries, and certain death at age 45 for you, you stupid nigger. So let me be free of a subhuman to enlighten the world now that a slave trade has made use of you.' The advocacy and defense of civil rights is the highest motive for any bodhisattva. So to an extent, I have much more respect for police officers who go around murdering innocent people on the basis of their race. At least those corrupted men have the backbone to not hide from what they are.
