A walk along the London Overground Railway Gospel Oak to Barking Line (GOBLIN) from Leytonstone to Barking.
The walk starts by the railway bridge on Grove Green Road, Leytonstone outside the Heathcote and Star. From here we go past Leytonstone High Road Station then pass through the Wanstead Slip and visit the Wanstead Tap located in one of the railway arches.
We cross Woodgrange Road, famous for its association with Jimi Hendrix at the Upper Cut Club, and head in Sebert Road. We cross a rainy Romford Road - once a Roman Road, and make our way through Manor Park and over the North Circular Road to Barking where the railway line terminates at Barking Station.
An account of a walk along the length of the Gospel Oak to Barking Line can be found in The Last London by Iain Sinclair.

The Goblin line was part of a route from St. Pancras to Tilbury built by the Midland railway (hence Leyton Midland station). Up until the 1960's you could get on Boat trains at St Pancras non stop to Tilbury Riverside.

Overend, Gurney and Company were the Banker's Bank" and they went spectacularly bust in the 1860s. They were the nineteenth century equivalent of Lehman Brothers and caused a similar amount of damage to the global economy. Gurney's Bank in Norwich was the one that went on to become part of Barclay's. Samuel Gurney was involved in both but they were separate entities. Whilst contemporary Quakers are still quite keen on the various chocolatier dynasties we tend to be slightly embarrassed by the bankers but not as embarrassed as we are about the whalers. However, we still love Betsy Fry, who was Samuel Gurney's sister. Although she's buried opposite the Gurdwara (formerly Barking Friends' Meeting House) in Barking, her tombstone can be found in the grounds of the wonderfully 1960's Wanstead Meeting House. If you visit them on the first Wednesday of a non-Covid month you can see it and then go on to walk their portable labyrinth.

thanks for that note Tim. I came across the 'Banker's Banker' reference when reading up on the Buxtons a few years ago. Had no idea about Elizabeth Fry's tombstone at the Wanstead Meeting House - walked past this evening in fact but have never actually explored the grounds, only the building. The Barking Friends Meeting House (site of) can be seen in a previous video.

About 40 years ago I lived briefly in Leytonstone. Happy days. I worked in Rainham and very often caught the first train from Leytonstone High Road. The station was locked up overnight and very often still closed as the train approached! Resulting in me having to climb the barriers! Leytonstone football ground was a magnificent bowl bit like the old Charlton Valley. Can only imagine what it was like in the 30s & 40s with those huge crowds . Thanks for sharing John. Enjoy your pint.

Hi John When I was a boy I remember going on the Barking Line in the early 1960's to Southend, it was steam then pulled by Jinty's 0-6-0 or 2-6-2 tank Loco's. The building near Tom Hood school was The Rookwood pub. It used have a Jazz club. Jimi Hendrix Experience played at Billy Walkers Upper Cut Club on Boxing Day 1967 . The advert announced ' Family Christmas Fun for all the family'. Cream played the week after. Barking has always been a run down area, I wonder if the locals are going to benefit from all the development?, I doubt it. Gary

I remember , sort of, those steam locomotives pulling the trains, My nan lived in Lambourne Road which is parallel to the railway line close to Upney Station, and the trains used to race past showing through the gaps between the houses opposite where she lived. My Pop worked as a shunter at Barking.

Hi John I’m a Rainham lad currently residing in Frinton Essex. My old mum was a Barking girl, lived on the old Gascoin estate down Oban road! Now a high rise estate, then? Two up two down steep staircase in the middle of the house ;0: . met my dad on Barking station after writing to him when he was with the army on anti aircraft guns in Gibraltar! Mum was in the Land army in WW2. Mum and Dad were bombed out in a neighbours house in Oban road when dad was home on leave! Another story, but she said the glass made the air shudder in the blast, and all their clothes got wrapped around the window frames. Mum used to write to dad from the air raid shelter at the bottom of the garden. Still have Mum and dads first letter from the early 40’s when they corresponding! I could write a book lol! One day I might, thanks for bringing back memories John~ Happy walking!

On the Gurney's, it's worth noting that Elizabeth Fry was born into that family and for some time lived at Ham House, the grounds of which later became West Ham Park. John Gurney was instrumental in the transfer of the grounds to the City of London Corporation so that it could be used as a public park. The Obelisk on Stratford Broadway is dedicated to Samuel Gurney.

Thank you for another wonderful video. You capture that delight in the urban that I find in John Betjeman too. In my youth I worked as a railwayman on this line, and as a child it was our gateway to Southend. Trekking from our home in Ashville Road, over the footbridge via Dyers Hall Road to Leytonstone station. Carrier bags laden with flasks and sandwiches. As an aside, may I tentatively suggest that you might at sometime consider a short film exploring the Victorian London of Charles Pooter. That wonderful comic creation of the brothers George and Weedon Grossmith, in their classic, "Diary of a Nobody." Pooter's fictional home was in Holloway and also backed onto a railway line.

These walks are powerfully bringing back memories. In the 60s we would embark at Leyton Midland Road and travelling via Barking, arrive at Southend for a day out. I think they were Diesel Multiple Units on the Leyton/Leytonstone line then and overhead electric to the coast. Wanstead House...Went to a schoolfriend's 11th birthday party in '68 - we were all only just recovering from chicken pox! The whole class. Happy days. Enjoy that beer.

Absolutely love your videos. Amazing that you mentioned the old Uppercut Club near Forest Gate Station which as I'm sure you know was a converted Ice Rink owned by the Walker brothers(not the band) boxing and business family. In 1967 I saw the Otis Redding/Stax/Volt roadshow there and Hendrix who apparently wrote Purple Haze while at the Uppercut. I lived for nine years in Wanstead and five years in Leyton and Whipps Cross in the 70's and 80's, so I'm very familiar with the area especially the pubs - The George in Wantead, The North Star and Crown in Leytonstone and The Hitchcock opposite Whipps Cross Lake and many more too numerous to mention. I eventually left London for the West Country in the late 80's, and although I love were I live now, I miss those areas you so eloquently describe and wonderfully film(and I know as a retired photographer and gallery organiser) terribly. Anyway Mr Rogers thank you for the enormous pleasure and bitter sweet memories you have given me through your walks/talks and films.

I'm sure you are aware of the excellent Victoria County History works on the British History Online website. I've been dipping in and out of _A History of the County of Essex: Volume 6_ for some time now. On the first page, there's a map of the Becontree Hundred, with Wanstead's odd-looking protrusion between Leyton and West Ham, which I assume is the Wanstead Slip. Even odder is the small patch of land that appears to be a part of Wanstead but is annexed from it (lying within West Ham on the Middlesex border). Have you any idea what that might relate to? (In a similar vein, the Walthamstow/Leyton border looks very strange too).

Awesome video John. The signs on the railway as you head into Forest Gate intrigue. Me I could've sworn a few years ago there were two, on two different bridges: Forest, and Gate. Now, I only see Forest, on the Bridge on Cann Hall Road. I really liked it before, it felt like it was easing that transition between the forest itself and Forest Gate, which as you say is more associated with Newham.

You mentioned Watson Road (Avenue or whatever it was) perhaps being in honour of Holmes/Watson, I think that given all the poet names it might be more likely Thomas Watson, Elizabethan poet.

In case anyone hasn't mentioned it, the building on the corner of Woodhouse and Cannhall Roads used to be a Charrington's owned pub called The Oak. It has been converted to multiple flats for so long that I can't find out from Googling any more of its history than the name - perhaps you can? I would love to see a picture of it from when it was in use.

I remember hearing that the pub was owned by four brothers who all died in the war ( not sure which one) and it fell into disrepair.

Another great video. That Eagle and child pub reminded me of the pub with the same name in Oxford which was one of J.R.R.Tolkein’s favourite ale houses. I wonder where the name originated?

I do wish I could walk again. Sigh... Walking along with you, I was reminded of my earlier 20s when I lived and worked in Atlanta, GA, USA. I still love that city, however, I don't think I would drive let alone walk my route anymore. Firstly, I think part of it is gone and then there is an undesirable change that was beginning in the late 60s early 70s. Ah, youth... Thanks for those memories, John. If you bring back such for others you will know your work is not in vain. PS: I chuckled when you spotted that pigeon going behind that fence. (Grin) Keep walking, stay safe.

That's so interesting. Thanks. When I read Billy Bragg's book,I think it's called The Progressive Patriot,I think,it made me briefly want to visit Barking,he made it sound so interesting! Sign of a good book/writer but then a lot of "ordinary" places are interesting too. Nice to see Barking in your film.

Nice, legit London neighbourhood...I stayed in a cheap and comfortable AirBnB place with a Kiwi family in Forest Glen, 2018 - 19:04 I believe. Interesting neighbourhood. Walked a good deal of it. Thanks for showing maps btw --- I always pause the video and orient myself using them. BTW - absolutely loving Rachel Lichtenstein's Estuary book, John. Thanks for that steer...

good work John, another great video. I remember seeing the empty nuclear waste containers as they passed through Dalston station on their way to Windscale in the late 70s. You've opened my eyes to the hidden london gems i never even knew were there,i especially love your walking "escape" routes out of london to the countryside, I know the feeling well! keep on with the good work, they bring back the nostalgia for when i lived in Hornsey long ago, perhaps you could do a walk round the beautiful Alexandra palace, which was at the end of my road, and recall the curse.looking forward to your next offering.

Streets I've walked - & many I haven't! All very entertaining & informative - Thank you (Funny enough, the walk starts at the Heathcote Arms - the other end of Pretoria Rd. is where I went to school in the early 70's - Norlington Rd. for boys)
