A DiamondBack Truck Cover - bit.ly/2IrQUHA - is the foundational element of this build. I've been a fan of them for years and pretty early on adopted a rack system to mount my rooftop tent. Having done a fair amount of trips with my CVT Rooftop Tent, I've learned a few things, and made a few tweaks. More recently I decided to turn it into basically the ultimate overlanding platform. The DiamondBack Cover, with its full aluminum construction is pretty lightweight, but still beefy enough to use as a base for bolting all kinds of aftermarket goodies. One of the key benefits for me though, is you still get your secure storage inside your bed both on the trail, and the rest of the week when you're just using it as your daily driver.
Stay tuned for a more in depth dive into how I have everything setup soon.

I picked up the heavy duty Diamondback cover last year back for my ‘17 Tacoma to secure work tools and I could not be happier. It is easy to use and durable. I also haul a lot of lumber on it and all the lashing points are perfect for tying things down. Price wise it was worth every penny.

How funny, I'm selling my wrangler and looking to get the Tacoma due to the fact that i can't secure stuff in the jeep. When I'm out and about. Love this set up and i will be copying it. Secure and practical. When the time comes watching the how to video will be really important. Way to help out the other people in this community.

Almost bought a diamond back cover but I load the bed of my truck so often with large items I would literally have to take the cover off once a week, this is why I’m loving my roll up cover :) love that setup though.

Very comprehensive review! Had to let go of my White Toyota Tacoma and bought a new Black Silverado. Won't get the Diamondback Smooth Cover until mid June. Security is my main reason for the purchase. I'm really interested on how other functionality can be incorporated in this unique cover. Later, I plan on getting some secure Yakima Kayak holders - probably roof mounted. Access to the bed is important during camping trips. I will continue to monitor your videos for creative ways to utilize the Diamondback Truck Covers. Thanks for all the hard work you put into your videos.

I commented on another video not too long ago about not liking truck bed covers that open near the front and back. But as i'm looking at them more from pictures and doing research on whats out there i think these diamondback covers are growing on me more and more, just how versatile they are, i mean, i can't open the gate on my truck with my current cover while its closed and i always the cover i have from the beginning, the passenger side of the hinge in the back doesn't close and its way tilted from the left, almost like it's being blocked while its completely empty. I definitely have to purchase a diamondback as soon as possible

Hey Mike, keep a close eye on those vertical bolts that go through the box tubing for your rack. They have a tendency to loosen up because the box tubing flexes when tightening the nuts and when a load is put on the bolts. Proper procedure (and it wouldn't be too hard in your particular setup) is to have a sleeve that the bolt goes through inside the box. This would prevent the box tubing from squishing when you tighten the nuts. Hope that makes sense... I'm happy to clarify if it doesn't.
@LastLineOfDefense
@LastLineOfDefense 6 жыл бұрын
Ah thanks for the recommendation, I'll keep an eye on them and see if I can find some sleeves somewhere. Local hardware store might have?
@LogicBob
@LogicBob 6 жыл бұрын
Last Line Of Defense Yeah, you should be able to get some round tubing at the hardware store that will fit over the bolt; anything that's not SUPER thin will be fine, steel or aluminum, and cut it to fit inside the box tubing and you're GTG. Of course, some kinda locking nut would be a good addition too.
@LastLineOfDefense
@LastLineOfDefense 6 жыл бұрын
Yeah I have nylon locking nuts and washers underneath - checked and none of them were loose (yet), but had previously noticed a very slight bow in the aluminum tubing. I noticed this though when I originally mounted it because of how much I tightened the bolts.

Hey Mike, I'm really digging your channel. Just wondering if you could share why you upgraded to the HD cover? I read a few comments here where you mention the SE would work for this setup. Does the placement of the rails add additional load rating? I weigh about 250 and wonder about being in the tent with my gf, who is only about 100lbs. Are their other benefits you could share between the two models? Sorry so many questions. Thanks!
@LastLineOfDefense
@LastLineOfDefense 4 жыл бұрын
Yeah I think the SE would hold up fine - Diamondback might recommend the HD to match up with their posted specs, but the SE is a very solid cover and a little lighter as well. I have the HD at the moment, just because they wanted me to test a few changes they made, so I was using it.

This video is of the HD. You can tell by the number of cross bars on it around the 15:22 mark. If you look at this Diamondback Review Vdeo that is the SE model you can tell by the cross bars around the 7:58 mark. That along with the blacked out hinges and hardware on the cover in the new video suggest that he got a new HD cover in the past month or so(when they upgrade to all black hardware) Which would make sense as the weight he was attaching to the top of the SE model was probably not recommended!

Yeah, definitely a handy setup. I don't really like the look of them, or how tall that whole setup ends up getting... I'm guessing you're missing a bit. I do have sliders now - but there are a dozen or more uses of a hi-lift outside of lifting the truck with the sliders (which honestly, with a rig with a lot of suspension travel often times sucks) - this is my favorite device though to use with a hi-lift - amzn.to/2liXea5

Last Line Of Defense I’m familiar with the uses of a hilift bud but thanks for making that clear.

Jake Ballard hahahahaha Im definitely sure that was the reason. The uses the he eluded to also requires other equipment that he doesn’t have. Overlander poser lmao

Why did you go with the cover and not a canopy?
@LastLineOfDefense
@LastLineOfDefense 6 жыл бұрын
Hate the look, heavy, tent would be way up high, etc. If I had a full length bed, then I'd consider a topper, since I'd be able to sleep in there if I needed/wanted. On a short bed, I think it makes less sense and I prefer this setup.

Last Line Of Defense Good deal. I have a '17 Tacoma Sport DCLB and just put a canopy on it. Slept in it over the last couple days at the PNW Overland Rally here in Washington State. It worked great! I will need to work on some condensation control as the windows were fogged every morning, even with the windows open about half way. However, I have a RTT coming that will go on the Prinsu rack on the cab, so I won't really need to worry about it!

1500-2000 dollars for bed cover. Yeah that is expensive or out of price range.

Thought the same. Saved my pennies and braced myself when I hit the confirm order button. I don't regret it one bit. It's like carrying a flashlight, you never knew how much you'd use it until you had it.

For some, it's definitely a big investment for sure. It'll outlast your truck though, plus made in the USA with a lifetime warranty - great company as well. I couldn't imagine having a truck without one, now.

It is expensive but well worth the price. I have one on my F-150 and it is the bomb. Buy once, cry once.

So why is a high lift jack necessary? When might you use that? I expect you might have mentioned it in the next, more in-depth video, but at the beginning of that video you said that a lot would be rehash of this video, so I chose to not watch it. Thanks.

Manual or automatic transmission?
@LastLineOfDefense
@LastLineOfDefense 6 жыл бұрын
Auto. I don't like manuals unless it's a sportscar or dedicated wheeler. Too old to be daily driving in a manual... haha

Last Line Of Defense haha I'm torn between buying a stick or auto trd off road. I like the idea of manual transmissions but I know some days I don't want to shift haha.
@LastLineOfDefense
@LastLineOfDefense 6 жыл бұрын
Yeah, tough call. I know people say that the manual feels a little quicker - the transmission on these isn't awesome, and it does shift gears more than I'd prefer, so a manual would obviously solve that little nit.
