People ask this a lot, so I figured I'd answer. The question usually goes something like this "Tent is 150lbs, you are 180lbs, maybe someone else might sleep in there, maybe your dog, plus whatever else - that's over 500lbs and the SE says it's only rated at 400lbs. Explain?" Answer: The cover (and most roof rack systems) give their max rated load as a dynamic rating. This means that's the max recommended weight to put on top when a vehicle is in motion. Usually they can handle more than the stated rating, but let's keep to that or lower to be safe. The static load that a system can handle is much higher than the dynamic - typically 2x or more (don't quote me on this). So assuming a 2x dynamic rating, a system that is rated to hold 400lbs, would be good to go with 800lbs on top when the vehicle is not moving. Don't hold me to this, I won't be liable for you guys breaking anything. But I did alright in physics back in school...
@peterlance5098
@peterlance5098 6 жыл бұрын
Honestly, static I bet the truck bed would cave before that cover would. I have the HD but I would bet that with the SE too. With the TC stiffener neither will give.

Thank you for the work it took for the code. They unfortunately didn't allow stacking codes so I just went with the mil discount. I hope the code sent to my email can be accessed by some other person by the end of the promotion.

I chatted with Diamondback about this and they claim the weight limit is both static and dynamic, however I'm inclined to agree with you based upon physics. The load limit is dynamic and obviously is rated under the real failure load for safety. The manufacture if asked will push you to the HD if you want a RTT, but I suspect that's more to limit liability than anything.
@LastLineOfDefense
@LastLineOfDefense 6 жыл бұрын
Agreed - they state a rating to protect themselves (which I totally understand). Whether they state that that is dynamic AND static means that it is indeed the dynamic load, and you can decide for yourself whether the static load would be the same (which it obviously wouldn't). I believe rack manufacturers also publish a basic "load limit" and don't specify what the actual static load is either. Static load hasn't really been cared about before the era of rooftop tents though, because what people put up on their racks never really changed while they were static.

I have a SE Diamondback and it’s awesome. On my Tacoma though I have KBVoodoo bed rails and they have tonneau brackets so the weight of the rack and gear is on the bed sides and not the cover. Pretty slick product as it goes around the cover

You know, Mike, you taking the extra effort of time and energy to go this in depth plus attach every piece and detail in the subscription show a lot of effort on your part. I do plan on getting a similar setup for my f150 as you have because I respect your perspective. The only reason I got a f150 and not a Toyota is because 6’2” with a car seat and I don’t think I’ll ever overland at the angles that you do. The only thing I’m waiting on is you to work with my set up on a left handed holster (g19 gen 5 w/ aplc) lol I know you have enough going on as is. Sorry for the rambling on the post (as I’m sure you can relate). Anyways you da man and keep putting effort into your work as it will pay off. Make my holster. Prayers sent your way for success.

Great video... tons of ideas came out of this. Not sure if this has been asked already or not but is there a way to attach the rack system without the diamondback cover? I like the height of the rack but the mounting brackets don't look like they would attach to the bed rails like with some other racks.

You could add a rubber hose over the jack mount bolts to eliminate washer rattle when the jack is removed. The hose would be in between the top and bottom washers.

well thought out sir and very good video. Have you found any otherTonneo covers that are almost as strong & water sealed as Diamondback? Diamondback has always been my 1st choice but its so expensive and it does add 80lbs to the truck.

Hey Mike. I loved the detail and thoroughness of the video. One very small thing I thought I’d mention is regarding your fuel container. Get a bottle of stabil for about $8 and mix it in with the gas. Your fuel will last for about a year if not longer. It’s great for winterizing any seasonal vehicles or lawn equipment as well. Maybe you don’t have a use for it but I thought I’d throw that out there. I can’t wait for the detailed suspension video! I have my wheels picked out for my Taco but I haven’t decided on tires or lift. I hope the upcoming video gives me a good starting point.
@LastLineOfDefense
@LastLineOfDefense 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the tip! Yeah i use Stabil in some fuel cans I keep at home, it's just not too difficult to cycle this stuff out since I keep it in the truck and usually just dump it into the tank while I'm at a gas station, and just fill it right back up there.

I live an hour from the Diamondback factory. They don't even give a discount if you pick up your cover at the factory and save them the shipping cost that they normally pay. I never heard of any company not knocking off the cost of shipping if you "pick up" at the factory.

Sweet set up and awesome truck! Your videos are super detailed and informative. Nice work. I would however consider upgrading those low strength zinc plated carriage bolts that mount your rack to the bed cover to something stronger like 316 Stainless Steel or even Grade 8 Steel (they will need to be painted). The last thing you need out on the trail when things get rockin' and rollin' is a bolt(s) to shear off. I like to purchase unique hardware from McMaster Carr for custom applications. A little pricey but worth it for the peace of mind in my opinion.

I had an issue keeping my a watertight seal with my Diamondback Cover. A gap is created between the height of the bedrail cover and the cab side of the bed. There is a factory bed liner. But even then there is a slight gap. The Diamondback Cover does not have a seal is thick and compresses enough to provide a tight seal. I had to add some weatherstripping along the cab bed rail to close the gap.

Great video man! I love my diamondback. I have the ATV version with the ramps although I don't really use it for that often, but I throw my backpacking tent on top all the time when camping here in Alaska. I found you because I am looking to add a rooftop tent to my diamondback too so awesome content from my point of view. I might do a ladder rack designed to go over a bed topper so I can retain use the hinge openings and use an annex room from the rooftop tent as well. Let me know what your thoughts are on that kind of setup? Thanks and keep it bro, really digging the channel!!!

Terrific video and thanks for taking the time to put this out there. However, if I caught you correctly, you have the SE variant of the Diamondback with a 400 lb haul capacity. Between the tent, gear and a couple of decent sized adults, wouldn't this well exceed the spec? Or is that rating only when the vehicle is in motion and the stationary rating notably higher? Thanks again.
@LastLineOfDefense

HikeItDirty Backpacker if you aren’t on tacomaworld.com that’s a great resource. I have a 2018 DCSB premium and I have the SE Diamondback cover with KBvoodoo racks. They are made to specifically for Tacoma’s and have tonneau brackets that go around the cover and transfer the weight to the bed sides. My truck is my DD and I take off my RTT and rack when I’m not camping, and the cover stays on. I also built a bed drawer that slides out 5’ for camping gear. Tacoma’s are awesome

Thanks David. I have been on tacomaworld quite a bit. I ended up getting a Leitner Designs Active Cargo System rack with storage pods and a FSR RTT. They are actually being installed today. I am planning on a Decked drawer system in the near future.

I might have missed it but I’d figure out a way to mount a fishing pole/small amount of tackle in one of the slots under the bed cover

Apparently the Front Runner racks now come in a 10" high version in addition to the original 6" one which you have there that you added risers too. I can't tell, but those look like about 3" risers that you added? Whatever they are, great job!

Quick question man, why did you go with the SE model and not the HD? I was looking at the website and saw that the SE weight cap is 400 lbs and the HD is 1600 lbs. I’m looking to do something like your setup, and I was wondering if the SE model would do just fine.

Wow, this is such an awesome and informative video. Thanks for sharing. I love the diamondback shell for your truck bed is such a great ideal. Yes, you are right about the over landing community are on the stuck up side. I have tried to reach out to Clay from Expedition Overland, and Jason K. and both hasn't respond to my request. I am new at the off-road adventure and getting day to purchase my off-road vehicle, I have numerous questions in regards to the suspensions, shocks, lifts, communication, electronics, and etc. for off-road. Let me know if you are a able to lend me an assistance. Thanks

Hi great setup. how does the rooftop tent rack work with toneau cover? I have a hard roll-up toneau cover with its rail on the truck rail. I am looking for a rack which can work with tonneau cover. any suggestion? Thanks

KB Voodoo makes some that would probably work with your setup

Going with a different but similar set up. Unfortunately the diamond back cover is outside of my budget even with the military discount.

You should use high strength rivets instead of all those protruding nuts and bolts

I have been watching all your vids just prior to me picking up my Tacoma. Was wondering if you can shed some light on the rotopax and the rotopax mount with the diamondback cover. I currently have 3 rotopax standing tall length wide across the back of my bed. ( 1 gas, 1 water, 1 storage) I am close to pulling the trigger on the diamondback but not sure if there will be clearance or will I have to change the orientation of the rotopax mount. If this is the case I would only be able to fit a few on the back at that point. If you can please let me know your thoughts

I believe I have to mount my rotopax sideways for clearance. basically if it sticks above the top of your bed, it probably won't work with any tonneau.

Seriously solid and good looking as well. Just looking at your work and you said pulley system. Have you considered a couple changes along with quick release so that the whole rack and accessories could be lifted up as a unit. This would leave bedcover installed with a highly useable bed. Just a thought that popped up due to your solid design.

Yeah, i've kicked around the idea of something like that - but haven't spent the time engineering anything yet.

Great video dude. Question: how often do you take your rack system completely off? I have a different rack system that I typically leave off unless I plan on using it. Honestly mostly so I can safely run my truck through the car wash on occasion. Kind of interested in the time/effort it takes to install or remove.

I run my truck through my car wash with racks on, maxtrax and all - have even done it many times with my awning and rooftop tent on there. But i rarely take my racks off.

I know this is a bit of an older video, but I was wondering if the Diamondback can be unmounted somewhat readily? I commonly need to be able to haul taller stuff like a pallet of seed or fertilizer, but I'd like a more sturdy cover than my current roll-style one - ideally I'd want a way to convert the ole truck from my normal utility setup to some sort of overland-like setup without spending a weekend doing so..
