The fact that car camping is common yet these new off-road SUVs aren't designed to accommodate a bed is an indication that the manufacturers are unaware of how they're being used. I camp in a 2011 Ford Expedition every night.

My local mattress company made me one the exact size I needed for my FJ . We use it a lot and put in the tent when we tent camp.

Thats an awesome idea! May have to look into that for a more permanent solution. Thanks for the idea!

Did they accommodate the bump in there or did you level it somehow yourself?

I was considering planning out a drawer system in the back with some rails that would allow a piece to slide forward with some fold down supports on the very front, completing a relatively flat platform. Plus, the drawer system would give a place to store all that gear!

Yes probably a better idea! I just wanted to do cheap before I went on my thru hike. I want to do something more like that when I’m done

Put a platform. Put drawers under the platform. Put a hinged board section that will move up when you move the seats up. Can store totes on platform and more in the drawers. Can sleep nice and still put passengers in the back.

Absolutely! I made a second video of how I built an easy platform to just level it out. Once I get home from thru hiking the AT I’m going to get a bit more fancy with it for sure

No way I could do that in my 2 door! LOL Glad you gave it a go to see how feasible it is to sleep in your 4 door Bronco.

definitely build out a platform. I built one in the back of my tahoe. You can split it (width-wise) with a hinge so you can lift up the rear section & have a post to keep it up while you get into the compartments underneath or any 2-3" items that can store under the platform. "Thumbs Up"

Yeah I like the hinge idea for sure! I spent another night in it last night unexpectedly, and I think the platform is a definite must!

Great video, that hump has always been my concern in considering purchasing the Bronco. It seems to be a headache, thanks for showing and sharing 👍🏼

Hey thanks for watching and sharing! I think it is a simple fix for this type of application though. There have been several comments on here talking about a similar situation on a different vehicle or a possible solution for the bronco. I think some kind of platform for the very back that you’d be able to lift up for storage would be the way I’d go.

I think with a platform it would be an awesome cost effective way to camp. Thanks for the vid!

My 2006 crv is perfect for 2 people to camp in when taking out back seats. Almost completely flat besides feet section of back benches. I’ve been looking for a newer SUV that’s easy flat and off-road lift kit possible - this seems solid - except I’m 6’3” …sitting up is A NEED in that set up for ideal 😊

I’ve done three car camping trips in my new Bronco and it’s been great. I’m 6’ 3” and fit east peasy as long as the front seat is completely forward including flipped forward. I need to move it to the passenger side, though, so the driver’s seat can stay put in case I need to move out quickly. For now I’m using 6” bed risers under my plywood at the rear to be level, but am going to build a frame next spring. Great video. Thx

I’m impressed that you can fit in there! It’s a tight fit for me at 5’9”!

So... Someone asked me how tall I am and apparently the KZfaq flagged the comment and deleted it. So to answer that question: I'm 5'9". I think with the front seats all the way forward someone up to about 6' could comfortably lay down in the back (straight). Anyone bigger than that could fit but would need to scrunch up. Hope that helps

Ford offers a storage system that slides out like a tailgate that is supposed to make that level, you might check it out in their build configurator, so I know you can buy it directly from them

Oh awesome! I actually got to go home snd hang out with my dad the other weekend. We ended up making a platform out of some scrap wood. I have a short video on it that I’m going to post this week as I head out in the Appalachian Trail.

If you build a platform (or order their trunk storage bin) that has slide out drawers for a stove, cutting board, and accessories, then put a fridge with drawers for food on one side, you can probably get a level sleeping area that also has basic cooking needs for shorter, week long camping trips. I'm hoping to get a bronco and do this some day. Too bad I live in the flat and crappy midwest, where I have to travel 5+ hours to get to decent camping spots though...

Yeah I built a platform for it, but it was a simple design. When I get back from the AT I’d like to do something a bit more like what you are describing though

I bought that raised lid thing so it totally blocks out the trunk for me! Then again I am small enough (just shy of 5ft2) that I could probably just flip down the bench seats and put some blankets. I also have a soft top so I don't think the top tent thing would be feasible. So many decisions... maybe I just need another Bronco with a different setup!
@theaveragery
@theaveragery Жыл бұрын
Yes, two broncos would always be better! One for sleeping in and one for driving! Ha ha ha. You might be able to make a platform that goes over the raised lid thing and your seats to get a level fit. I don’t like the idea of roof tents… seems like more work than a regular tent, but at 1,000% markup. I guess I don’t know what the raised lid thing is so I can’t help you out beyond that.

Hey bud, I’ve seen various trunk drawers that might fit what you need by the looks of it some will make the drawer flush with the rear seats.

I test drove a new bronco recently and was super bummed to see how uneven and extremely uncomfortable-looking the floor was with seats folded down. I was considering trading my Honda Element (completely flat and roomy) since overland/car camping is my jam.
@theaveragery
@theaveragery Жыл бұрын
Yeah even with the platform I built in the back to level it out, the seats folded down still are completely level. But it’s not noticeable to me when laying back there, but I think that’s because I use a pillow and a backpacking air mattress that kind of help. I mean I have seen some good set ups with the Honda Element though, that’s for sure. Not a bad rig

6'6 person fit good?
@theaveragery
@theaveragery 2 жыл бұрын
Eh… I don’t think so. I struggled at 5’9”, but I think if you really wanted to make it work, you could remove the front passenger side seat and make a platform to help even things out. Or if you don’t mind sleeping like a pretzel then yeah, the way I did it might work. I think anyone over 6ft tall will struggle with sleeping in the back if they want to lay down straight.
