Colt has decided to turn his Jeep Cherokee XJ dubbed "Rats Nest" into an overlander since the smoke show S10 has taken over the rocklander duties for mild camping and hardcore wheeling. We install one of our favorite XJ roof racks and a roof top tent that can fit sasquatch!!

You might want to consider a inexpensive hitch step. That way you don't compromise your clearance and add weight with a larger bumper. Rats nest is one of my favorite Jeeps out there, so it's good see how you use it.

Not sure how I missed this one! Awesome video Colt with helpful info. Hopefully we will get to see you two exploring your new area as you get some camping time in. One thing I found helped us if we were staying multiple nights was the addition of our inflatable sleeping mats. They don’t take up that much space and your back is very grateful in the morning. Keep on smiling!🌺

I have a soft sided roof top tent on my XJ, because when I got it the hard top tents hadn't come out yet. The biggest advantages of the RTT over a ground tent are not having to look for level ground. With a RTT I just level my jeep. Sometimes you can't find a level place to pitch a ground tent. Rocks and twigs are no longer a consideration and those creepy crawly mice and bugs stay on the ground. Enjoy your rig Colt. Be safe.

As an alpinist I can say condensation is always a concern in a tent. Whether it's water or frost it will dampen your bag. I've never been 1 to increase air flow as I'd rather be warmer. I have actually strapped my bag outside my pack for wind/air flow to dry it out the next day. No one wants or needs a damp bag to sleep in the next day.

Something for the rear step you can quickly weld up a flat plate of 3/16 on a 2x2 square tubing to pin in receiver hitch then a step and a shelf for working on off bumper a handy multi function piece.... a Jet-Boil will set on one great to make coffee, hot beverage or quick lunch. I do recommend a few gussets for strength too. Then solid surface for replacement u-joints too. I had made one for my XJ years ago. 👍 I got a few rechargeable fans to use in R.T.T. they help in warm weather too. There is this matting available to put under the mattress that good for condensation to be able to vent out of mattress too it's used in boats and some R.V. by some of us. Now that you have got a test run of the setup you can see what areas you want to change or find a fix or modification.

Your wife is such a trooper to accompany you on this trial run. Kudos to her! Finally, you have accomplished so much in your small two car garage. I would hope you could start a patreon group or get sponsors to raise funds to build yourself a larger shop with more room and a lift. No telling what you could accomplish then. Having said that, you are doing great work and it's always fun to watch your adventures. I really enjoy your rock crawling in the Samurai. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Hey, noting all the issues could have been done in the backyard. That awning, is basically to cover for straight down rain for entering and exiting that rear access. Being on the side, you should look to put an awning on that side and secure the rear one to minimize flap noise. You may want to move those shoe sacks as well, near the entrance/exit opening. Also realize your shoes/boots will be morning rise temps and your warm socked feet will get a strong shock as you put them on hanging your feet off the ladder. And with non-insulated canvas walls, anticipate dew, lots of dew. Oh, you saw that already. Another thought from watching, since you basically don't have a rear seat (assumption), you could look at putting in an interior curtain to contain the heat when you start up and let it warm up while you have that large rear hatch open for breakfast, packing up, cleaning up, etc.

When I used to go winter camping back when we would camp around the dinosoars... My trusty expedition tent had cotton "frost liners" they went on with snaps and tapes... you would take them out In the morning if it was cold enough; you wait for the sweat to freeze, and you could just snap it off... I like seeing this rig... I have a similar one though my one ton axles are on a pallet... Maybe I'll hold on to it...

I don’t know if it’s been mentioned or if you’ve already thought of it. But a couple leveling blocks (like RVs use) are a good idea. There is nothing worse than feeling like you’re going to roll out of the tent because the Jeep isn’t on level ground. You can make them out of wood or buy the stepped ones almost anywhere they sell camping stuff.

More venting will help & seems like everyone is going to diesel heaters. After sorting the tent it’ll be time to move onto awning/tent for hanging out and the whole kitchen thing. AB Camping from New Zealand does loads of car/overland style camping. Good source of info.

Would love to see you build a 4x4 Ford Econoline from a cab and chassis (instead of a full body). Leaf springs and Dana 60s from a F350. I think it'd be cool to find a longer wheel base and chop the rear end so the rear axle is closer to the back. Maybe an old RV with the "house" messed up to get a decent GVWR and cheap set up. Plus the flat ladder frame are great for a small box on the rear out of foam board to keep it light. 7.3 diesel came in them as well 😎 Happy camping!

I have the same RTT and love it! One trick I did was electrical tape on the zipper pulls so there is no clinking all night when it is windy. Also mounted a solar charging led strip lighting, panel mounts to the top shell and the cables will fit through the tiny gap at the top corners of the tent. Stiffer springs were also a must for me, helped a lot for the body roll.

I also have a OVS rtt its the Nomad 4 on my XJ. Its large enough to support a queen size foam mattress. I have been thinking about a diesel heater for winter camping and to eliminate the condensation as well. With the bidy roll I've been looking at aftermarket front and rear sway bars. Yes, the XJ does lean in the turns. Then the extra weight up high really rocks it around out on the trails. Its always something to upgrade/replace or engineer on these things. Great video and cool looking rig! Thanks for sharing.

nice start to an overland build lots of guys buy a really cheap tent to start then end up having to upgrade . you started out right lots of overland builds will have a diesel heater and that would help with condensation and you wont have to over bundle . always enjoy your videos .if you do a camp kitchen you might want to think about a slide to mount the kitchen stuff on for pull out convenience and maybe a 360 degree awning . I guess I should just wait and see what you do, I tend to get over excited about overland builds . there are so many options.

I have the same type of RTT on my Nissan Pathfinder. I use the sunroof to reach underneath bolt. My first setup was like you then I move it back 6" so I can put the ladder behind. I use side opening to load/unload material. Then I close the trunk and move the ladder behind. It's easier to get in and out for 2 persons with the ladder behind, and it is under the awning for rain protection. I remove the hook from the ladder so I can put it anywwhere without scratching the paint. Have fun and merry christmas!

Great video as always! A small battery operated fan blowing air out at the top will help with condensation. Condensation in tents will always be the biggest pain, short of quitting breathing, you cannot stop it. As a winter camper I'm curious how it would be if you went snowshoeing and returned hot and sweaty prior to bedding down. When my son and I cold camp that is one benefit to a good nights sleep. Having your body temp up when you climb into the old fart sack truly takes advantage of a sleeping bags insulation. Thank You again for the setup and review. One tip I would have for winter camping is take your boots in. Or if they have a liner, take the liner in. Even in the cold of winter, your feet sweat. When the temperature drops overnight, you might wake up to find your boots are a block of ice.

to greatly improve not loosing heat in your RTT.... is make a skirt that hangs down from bottom of RTT to the R-Nest's roof. aka.. something that prevents much air from flowing under the RTT. That moving air below RTT is what whisks away any warmth that penetrated into floor of RTT.

Cole most people that use rooftop tents in the winter use a 12v electric blanket to heat up the inside of the tent. If you’ve got a robust battery bank system, you can use a small electric heater the ceramic brick styles seem to work the best. More adventurous winter campers will use a diesel heater, piping warm air up to the tent through a flex hose.

Don't know if anyone has mentioned Trail Recon yet, but Brad it a guru at overlanding. Have you met him yet? Might be able to help with the rig set-up and tent moisture.

thats a pretty sweet setup and im kinda happy youre not gonna be bangin that nice XJ off the rocks. im running Fox 2.0s on my 96 2 dr with 4.5" lift and they are firm but not harsh. are you running a sway bar? so, i paused the video on my TV and finally got a close up of your stock flares, what did you use to trim them to match the body lines? im only doing the fronts on mine to clear 33s but i want it to look good like yours👍

That’s a nice looking rack do they make it for the WJ And I’ve been looking at rooftop tents One thing everyone talks about is condensation They say some have a special roof liner that wicks the moisture out and also doubles the insulation value And some have cool built in led lights and charging ports tons of do dads

#1 fix, is the rear diff and axle. Nobody accounts for the weight added on to overlanding. Causing the axle to bounce and twist the axle when minor 4x4. 😊

Bleepincolt your cool dude. You should do a video on how to obtain “budget/low cost” one ton axles. How to find best price, what the best axles are, where to look ect… thanks

Hey once you figure out the new rear bumper I'm interested in the current one you have. That's about all I'm missing on mine, the new engine killed my budget😂
