True, but the rating is usually making the boat underpowered. I had a 14ft aluminum that was tagged max horse power of 15. i ended up putting a 50 on it and it was fine

Our 21’ boat we build is coast guard certified for a 150 hp max… I know plenty of guys 3ho run 200 and 300 hp etecs on the boat and it’s perfectly fine just a coast guard certificate rule

Overpowering a boat is allowed in some places typically because the water is shallower than most They allow a bit more hp so you can get up on plane faster and not tear up the grass flats

I love how yall talk about hp/weight ratio on the 300r being astronomical when the 300x (promax era) exists, 320hp at the prop at 467lbs with trim pump.

I've got a 10ft Jon boat that I strapped a 25 on for using on the Schuylkill river and I know it's not crazy over powered but it's definitely not the safest thing in the world 😂. I'm in the process of restoring my old 16 StarCraft and I'm looking at power. I really want to do twins.

I know you were saying a 600 is crazy for a 30’ but my dad has a 34’ 2007 Formula PC and we have two 375 V8s (750 total) I understand where you’re coming from but when you put a 34’ next to a 20’ you would say it needs the power. Great video!

My boat is rated for 115hp, but it's got a 130 on it (Yamaha V4 2 stroke).. essentially the same engine that probably weighs the same, 15hp difference coming from increased compression, probably different reeds and different carbies. Would I like to put an OX66 on it? Yes, would the boat cope with the added weight, probably not.

Too much horse power on a small boat is considered unsafe because it makes the boat react to fast for operator thats why tiller handle hp is always lower than remote steering is the ability to make fast inputs with tiller possible to lose control.

My dad had a Larson 186 SEI with a 225 V8 Johnson outboard in it even though the boat is only meant to have 150 hp and could cruise at 65 mph. Transom handled it like a champ with no flex. I have a few youtube videos of someone putting in a 200 hp outboard on a 14 ft Jon boat somebody, it's a cheap way to have a race boat. I want my boat to take off like a missile and at least have a 100 mph top speed and 85 mph cruising speed. Take a stern-driven Bowrider and place a Mercury Racing engine in it don't mind putting in a 90,000 dollar engine in that 15 to 25k used boat.

I was run over by a 1980 70hp evinrude on a 15ft whaler when I was in high school. 13 lacerations across my shoulders from elbow to elbow. I was super fortunate that none of the cuts were into major arteries or even bone. I had a 14th laceration on my left earlobe. It was a freak show afterwards but my buddies all did the right thing and got me to a hospital pretty quickly. The way it happened was I sat up on the edge of the bow, next to the bow light. There's a triangular pad there. I lost my balance and fell in over the front while we were underway but not fully planed off. I still see people riding way too far forward all the time. It's not worth it.

Great subject! I'm kind of in the same predicament as I'm trying to decide whether to update existing and going over the rated HP or sell and upgrade to a 27ft or 30ft. I've got a 1990 Mako 221 deep V with a brand new single 200 Yamaha on it with 57 hr. We are the original owners with the tank already upgraded back in the late 90ty's(enough to make runs to Bimini and back). But I live on the gulf side now and this single engine thing is making me uncomfortable when thinking of making these shelf runs. I was thinking of sealing the transom off completely (its had some closure done by BassPro but not the best work IMO) and getting a Armstrong bracket made for two 115's or maybe 150"S boats rated for 240 according to the plate. So do I risk it and upgrade it or sell and shoot for a 27 to 30 with twins already on them?

Great boat! But, honestly in my opinion, I had an 85' 21 Mako and I closed the transom and added the platform bracket and a 250 Evinrude Oceanpro. Boat ran great and was amazing, but it was right there at that line where it was starting to get porpoisy, if it was just me in the boat and not a lot of gear, it was right there on that line where with the right trim and a chop, it could porpoise. Also spent a lot of time on a 92 23' Mako with the same transom and bracket deal but with a 300 Verado, and that was porpoisy. Without that over power it would not have been that great. And you are running an inline 4 cylinder so already down on power because of that, Mako's are heavy. So I would probably go for selling it instead of doing the twins. It's going to be risky on being porpoisy and not riding right because of the added weight. :/ just my opinion. The Yamaha 115's weigh almost 400 lbs so you are talking 800 there plus the bracket, and the two mako's that I ran had a 250 and a 300 so they would get that 40's range, where you will be super low in the power department for that boat :(

I'm curious about this. I have a Sea Pro 270CC that is yacht certified. It is apparently only rated for 450hp. Well I have twin 200hp HPDIs. The thought of putting 4 cylinder 200hp on my boat I feel will lose the low end take off. They do not make counter rotating 225hp. So my only choice for a V6 power is 250hp. So I technically will only overpower it by 50hp. The weight difference will be about 200lbs extra because the HPDIs are very light. What would your thoughts be on this situation?

I have a 2007 14 ft aluminum boat with a 15 hp max rating while when I look up the coast gaurd tables it says a boat of the size should be able to handle 20 hp. I contacted the manufacturer and they emailed me a photo of the brochure... I basically am thinking of just upgrading the ECU to 20 hp which would be the same weight so no overloading on the transom and plan on adding motor well which is really going to be there for supporting the transom so it doesn't flex. How does it compare when talking about a smaller boat like this vs a larger boat? Might I end up with problems with the hull fatiguing over time?
@TheBoatersPodcast
@TheBoatersPodcast 8 ай бұрын
Honestly, in my own personal opinion, I don't think you'd have a problem, if a 5HP difference in the engine, based on the ECU change is going to compromise the welds and the structure of the boat, I would be concerned with the safety of the boat as is period! What happens if you hit ground at speed? The force of that grounding even when the engine flips up based on the trim by pass, if the transom is that flimsy, you've got a problem to begin with lol. If you add the brackets to make a well there though, that support on the transom should be perfect. Obviously it's your own stuff so you're taking all the liability and risk, but we are talking about a 14 ft boat with a difference of 5 HP. Structurally your brackets should make it work and that extra 5 HP should be able to get you a little more control of the boat when you've got it weighted down.

Are you guys running your own business now? Something happened a while ago and you stopped filming from the marina you used too in the Keys. I think you have the most knowledge of any boating service channel. You are clearly a master technician. Your partner on the other hand is a C level at best. He clearly is your apprentice.Glad you guys are doing this, best channel on YT!

Boats are underpowered because of insurance companies who have rich powerful lobbyists. They are in a risk-based business but they don't want risk. Underpowered boats are or can be more dangerous than an overpowered boat, depending on the type of boating you do. If you go offshore you need extra power in big seas. I have a 19CC with a 150 4s. With 2 people, it performs ok. With 4 and gear, it is more of a dog. My boat would handle a 250 easily. One last thing, any boat in the hands of an idiot is dangerous and in Florida there are piles of idiots on the water. Big wallets, big money boats and they do not know the first thing about proper operation.
