Fall is unarguably the best time of the year to make lawn improvements. Cooler soil temperatures coupled with cooler day and night air temps, typically plenty of moisture, and you're setting the stage for perfect growing conditions. Soil preparation is critical. If you haven't watched the 3 point dethatcher video, then I'd encourage you to do so. It both aids with removing too much thatch material that can starve the soil and roots from nutrients and water and also scuffs of the hard pack to provide an ideal surface for seed to soil contact.
I'm using a John Deere 1025r tractor and an Ag Spray 3 point electric spreader with variable speed control. In this video, I'm applying 250 lbs (more than most will need) of Perennial Ryegrass and Kentucky Bluegrass, 120 lbs of 18-24-12 starter fertilizer, and 200 lbs of Anderson's Humichar soil ammendment.

If you do this work all the time I'm sure that this rig is a time saver. I have found over the years however, that broadcast spreaders are difficult to get the adjustments right on an occasional use basis. Trying to get tractor ground speed matched with hopper opening and with broadcaster speed will be really tough for the occasional user.

If you are maintaining your own lawn, or food plots, or even driveway in the winter, then there's ample opportunity to figure out the settings. There's quite a bit of forgiveness in rates. Criss cross patterns and starting on lower gate settings will help avoid over or under application. Dimensionally sketching your property will give you an idea of how much material needs to be used overall as well as each area.

Cortney I am curious have you ever thought about making one of these fully self-contained using say a Milwaukee or Dewalt battery to power it. There is kits on 15-30 bucks on eBay and Amazon to make it so you can power all sorts of stuff with battery packs we already have on the shelf. Ie. I recently wired up my 50 and 150 gal portable diesel tanks to run off my Milwaukee batteries. It has been working great. I was thinking that same approach might work great on something like this, to make it fully self contained. Slap it on a 3pt and cab or open station and go. Was also thinking it might be possible to setup a wireless remote to turn it on and off for ease of use with small cab tractors. I would want a remote way to shut it off from the cab so not to over fertilize the headlands.

What’s preventing it from going in the flowerbeds to Cedar the fertilizer anything that you’re spreading today is there something for the sides so it doesn’t go that way?

After watching a lot of farming videos, I have to ask... wouldn't leaving the mower deck on along with the fluid filled tires create more soil compaction thus affecting grass growth or does it not matter when it comes to over seeding yards? Great videos, keep them coming.
@GoodWorksTractors
@GoodWorksTractors 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, heavier the machine, the more compaction. I aerate most years (not this year though). Driving over your lawn in the same spots repeatedly, mowing the same lines, those types of behaviors are what create ruts. Mix up your mowing patterns, tire travel locations, etc and it will go a long ways to preventing ruts and over-compaction in general.

@PaulChristenson
@PaulChristenson 3 жыл бұрын
There are two causes of compaction. The first type you have no control over - that’s natural compaction. These soils have poor structure. Normally, these types of soils would be put back into pasture because they don’t function well. Human-induced compaction is the second type. It is caused by excessive or untimely tillage, wheel traffic, and axle load. I know people who’ve been no-till for 30 years, and they still have an existing hardpan. This is not something that disappears quickly. Over time, it heals itself. The top 6 to 8 inches are shallow compaction. That’s caused by pressure on the soil from wheel traffic. Make sure you run tire pressure for field conditions and not road conditions. Tire pressure for roads will be a lot higher than the pressure you want in your field. A misconception she’s heard is that tracks are better than tires for compaction. There’s no real difference if your duals are properly inflated. Deep compaction, below 8 inches and as much as 3 to 4 feet deep, is related to your axle load. 80% of compaction happens in the first pass. You need to think about when you are moving across the field and under what conditions. When the soil is dry, it’s not going to be affected. Ditto for wet soils. When your soil is fully saturated and you’re running on it, you’re not really compacting the soil heavily. You’re messing with structure because you’re sliming the soil all over and creating ruts. Deeper down, if there’s a lot of water, the water is protecting and holding those pores in place. THE ISSUE is when soils are moist or near field capacity. This is when your aggregates are lubricated. The biggest pores are filled with air because they’ve been allowed to drain. Those pores will collapse when driven over. Often, fieldwork occurs in this moist situation. Mother Nature will fix it with the freeze-thaw cycle, right? Wrong. The freeze-thaw cycle, the idea that it breaks up and fixes compaction, only really works at the surface. Prevention is the first step. Running equipment full might be a problem if you are in moist conditions. Stay off the field when conditions are poor. Check your tire pressure and reduce your axle load when you can by emptying the combine earlier and running the grain carts half full. You also need to minimize trips across the field, AND remain in the same tracks when possible...i.e. make use of your GPS systems, and reduce tillage. A entire compact tractor weighs less that ONE LOADED AG tire...:) i.ytimg.com/vi/5LjwxMflWBo/maxresdefault.jpg

i would be careful turning on and off the spreader while using a nitrogen product. because it puts high amounts of the fertilizer in one spot where you turned it on and it will burn the turf

A real tractor man would have used his tractor with the forks you can order from Good Works to move those bags of seed...and then raised the bags with your FEL to a spot above the spreader to load it with the least amount of labor...:)....Finally, he'd back his tractor up the the spreader and pick the spreader up with his quick hitch that he can also order from Good Works tractor...:)

Not once in this “demo” did you demo the inconvenience of having to reach behind ( an especially challenging maneuver while underway and the spreader is hitched on the quick hitch) and manually shut off the drop gate. All well and good when spreading seed but a disaster if you’re spreading high nitrogen fertilizer. The electric spreader wheel is a nice feature and almost infinitely adjustable but any pause movement allows fertilizer to continue dropping on the fins and hence, when starting up again, your in danger of burning the lawn…You need to talk about this in a demo…this company has to rig something that is much easier to control from the seat….Trying to reach around and shut this off and on is a real pain and is not safe to boot. Concept needs more work !!
