i do wonder in a few decades, when us gen z's (and gen alphas) grow old, how many of us will look back at our lives and regret how much of our life we spent on screens.

We will, I’m 21 and had matured within less than a year ago with disciplined social media detox it had opened my eyes fully yet I don’t have social friends and nor a job even I’ve strived for one many times same results and so it gets lonely and draining as if I’m wasting time not having those needs for some while😢

This is an eye opener. I’ve been on summer vacation for only 4 days and I’ve literally just been switching from my phone, to my computer, to my tv. Today I tried going outside but I got bored after 2 seconds and I went inside and got back on my phone. After I got bored of scrolling a few hours, I decided to try sewing as I used to be really into it. I got bored of that after like 5 minutes and went on my computer 😭 there’s something seriously wrong with me. I’ll be starting this dopamine detox tomorrow!

Best of luck! And start slow, maybe one day with no computer, next few days no tv, or maybe for certain periods of the day, that worked best for me, that and getting busy

Im turning 23 soon and I ended up quitting my job a couple months ago due to a robbery that happened there😅 I am now looking for a job I’ll at least not be miserable at but most of the time I’m just being lazy and super addicted to screens, eating junk, and feeling bad about myself. I need out of this rut so bad💔

good stuff man. i've been aware of this / doing this since mid 2021. its genuinely a gamechanger when you put the responsibility on yourself and recognize that nobody is coming to help you. for people in the comments, this isnt a few day change, this isn't something that comes and goes, this is a lifestyle. choosing to pursue your interests, give your actions intentions and meaning, and living in your best interests can and should be something you do forever.

Why do people struggle to see that technology and social media, though neutral, are powerful tools that can either help or harm us? In this 21st century, we see an epidemic of information overload, memory loss, constant distraction, and growing dependency. These issues come not from the technology itself but from our unrestrained and unconscious use of it. We must choose wisely: to use these tools to enlighten and empower us, or to let them lead us into a maze of losing our deepfocus and attention we sometimes forget what matter to us in the moment. The choice is ours, to use technology with intention and purpose, or to be consumed by its vastness.

I have some follow up questions. Ive seen your older videos and I did commit to a dopamine detox and "monk mode" for the first 4 months or so of the year but it just all starts falling apart eventually. Lose 20 minutes of sleep there, sleep in once, check your instagram messages, look at ur friends phone while hes scrolling tiktok, and bam, youre right back to where you started. Its so hard to be so strict on yourself consistently. How do you overcome this? I also have a follow up question, you say by doing a dopamine detox i can spend time on stuff that really matters. Well what if to me, video games and such do matter? Dont get me wrong, at my current stage, im totally just gaming as a way to abuse my dopamine levels, but there are video games ive played, movies ive seen, books ive read that I do not regret consuming and that have actually had a positive impact on me. Ive always been passionate about storytelling and such, so how come youre fine with books, but games, movies and perhaps music is off limits, when they all can portrait the same message/story? Or maybe im just using this as an excuse to keep gaming. I also find online games with friends to be benefitial to our bonds and friendship, though I guess theres a limit to all of this. My final problem ive been having trouble with, is the fact im 16 years of age. When i look up to you, its so hard not to make the excuse of "im only 16, i can allow myself to game for another 2 years, Abraham is successful, and he was no better then me at my age." I get that by commiting now im helping my future self by a ton and putting myself at a huge advantage, but its so hard to even just subconsciously not use my young age to justify cheap pleasures. How do i overcome this?

going on a detox - no games day to day life - don't play every day Just my personal opinion. If I am being completely honest with you, what asked is something that addicts say. Try experiencing life without video games for a few months, then see if you still want to play for one hour a day. If you do, fine. But it's likely you won't. I've been on all sides of the spectrum btw.
