Very well explained. You have dispelled a few myths for me. Thanks

FYI - nmea2000 is a “proprietary” protocol that cost money but it allows all members to share data on a standard network. It’s the new version of nmea0183 that allows for more devices, and much more. No need for multiplexing anymore and independent device power sources. N2k is a protocol, wiring and power standard that provides a complet marine network standard to allow vendors to work together. I have Raymarine, verper marine and Garmin n2k devices all working to getter with no issue on a single simple network. Signalk was initially created to convert NMEA 0183, and later took on nmea2000 and other protocols over IP using readable easy http like format. So true n2k is not publicly open to “non-members”, but it’s not intended to restrict, quite the opposite. Many hardware companies are part of it and it improved things greatly for boater.

They try to charge people for a protocol! Thats definitely a restriction. Garmin has their own protocol, they just make their devices compatible with the standard.

Hi Nick, big thanks for making this video. I have a new to me 30 year old sailboat with mostly 30 year or so nav gear. I have been planning a rip out and rebuild of the nav station next winter, starting with a chart plotter . But the cost is scary. I've been aware of the raspberry pi since it first launched, band this looks an ideal project to get involved. I love the idea of creating a network of sensors on the boat which can be accessed from just about any handheld device, and/or remotely. Like Patrick and Rebecca , I would also want to be able to transmit my ais data. I saw an article in PBO recently on a home grew transmitter. Going to re-read that to see how easy it might be to integrate

I'm glad you found it helpful. I'm glad that you mentioned that it does not transmit. That's a very important distinction.

@@nicksails7655 Did some research on homebrew AIS transmission. The article in Practical Boat Owner (PBO) used the ONWA KS200A which the author bought from US eBay for about USD275 plus shipping. (ONWA seems to have a good reputation and makes the device in several variants at different prices.) In theory this is available in the UK from a couple of suppliers, but neither seems to have it in their active catalogue, and it does not seem to be available from ONWA at the moment. I also found the Matsutec HA102. Again there's several variants but only one is currently available in the US and Australia - not the UK. The available version is USD250. This device is also mentioned in the PBO article. The author notes that it has an unusual connector (something like a 10-pin DIN) which you will need to suss out to provide power to the device. He also says that documentation is unavailable and the supplier unresponsive. The adaptor doesn't appear to have a type name, and it's not anything I recognise. I suspect that the demand for bare-bones / hobbyist AIS transmitters is very low and the need to get type approval (as this is a radio transmitter) will both push the price up and the availability down

IMO I wouldn't imagine a home built AIS transmitter is feasible considering the fact that "transmitting" radio signals is regulated by various government agencies around the globe (FCC & USDG for example). The information being transmitted by AIS is "suppose" to be in a database with all kinds of regulatory ID numbers and such attached to the vessel registration info, blah blah blah.... I don't see it happening. (but I was wrong ONE other time before) so who knows) :)

Yes that would be my conclusion as well. Does a trandsponder need to be attatched to a chartplotter? I don't think so but i dont know

Actual video starts at 7 minutes. Really long monologue about something, explains what a Raspberry pi is for the next 5 minutes. Let me save you 12 minutes Raspberry pi uses 0.5 amps. Trim you stuff down. You have some good info but a ton of extra info.
