When we first met, I didn't trust anyone. I thought if I kept everybody out, I'd stop myself from being hurt or let down, which is what I was used to. Then we set the clinic up together, and I realized that most of the people who came to us for help really just needed connection. And maybe I wasn't so different. You have the rare ability to make people feel truly seen. And you did the same for me. It was this and your relentless optimism about human beings that gave me the courage to start opening myself up to other people. For the first time in my life, I didn't feel alone, which allowed me to imagine something bigger for myself. I want you to know that however much it fucking hurts that we can't be together, I won't ever close myself off again. Meeting you cracked my heart open, and now it's forever changed. And because of that, I will carry a part of you with me wherever I go. I think what I'm trying to say is thanks for everything.

@Meet.Raval21 well, the ending was also realistic by not saying anything about the future of their relationship. We don't know if they stopped talking at all, or if they stopped the no contact. Just like in real life, they could see each other again in the future, or they could not. We also don't know if she stayed in the us (she just said she could'nt guarantee she was going to come back). Both of them just found their path, and in the ending they decide to follow it.

I want to watch all 4 seasons again but I don't think I can take it atm, too soon and upset at the ending. Think in a couple of months time I'll watch it all back again because like the moment you're describing in season 1 were so goof.

yeah I think everybody will but at the moment it's still so fresh, I hate how sad the ending is and that it's all finished. I definitely will watch all of it again but as you said, in due time. I just find it annoying that they were gonna do a S5 because S4 wasn't intended to be the last but as they were writing they felt all the stories of the characters were coming to a sooner end. I just think we could of not got another season but a couple more episodes in S4.@@friendsabhi

It's funny that in this day and age the show can't go for a time skip so that Otis can surprise Maeve in the US. I would recommend everyone watching a bollywood film called Half Girlfriend, where one can see what a guy can do for his girl, Otis had the same potential but alas, the show just was hell to show him as an anxious and lost fellow who could not fight for his turf and rights. Is it not surprising that it is always Otis who has always been apologizing despite being hurt himself, perhaps others are too proud to say sorry.

@@irris-rayBelieve me I am trying as well. I was just as much shipping Otis and Maeve as any other MOTIS fan was but I was equally as disappointed. I too do not give an F about bollywood movies but this one in particular peaked my interest for the fight the guy showed for his girl and I saw the same potential in Otis as well when he argued with his mom but alas we are dealing with a reality show rather than an entertaining series which it was till S3. This season was just horrid with so many disconnects.

Even though they didn't end up together at the end, we have to agree that Otis and Maeve will undoubtedly go down as one of the most iconic romantic pairs. The amount of love and hype this pair shared throughout the 3-4 years of this show is insane and it's all testament to the creators and the actors, Asa and Emma. Hope they do work together again because they genuinely share great chemistry!

Disagree, I think a lot of people agree that Ruby and Otis were a more natural couple. Especially seeing how it took them so long to be together and it lasted a very short time. Maybe season one Maeve and Otis felt like it could be a thing but then it started to feel forced.

It became "forced" because all the character development and misunderstandings they had to endure just to get together and otis and ruby's relationship was toxic and lust love at the first place, when otis met ruby all they think about is sex and nothing more yes they had character journey later and some character growth but it does'nt compare what otis and maeve went through. Otis has been there for maeve since the moment he met her and they shared a friendship and trust with eachother in the clinic and real life way more than otis and ruby ever did. Its worth it to love with reciprocation then without.

It had to happen at some point but it's very sad that the show has come to an end, I absolutely loved it! I agree that they will go down as one of the most iconic romantic pairs ever. Asa and Emma obviously understand how lucky they are to portray these characters. The ending was sad but it's realistic to high school relationships. However, I'd like to think Maeve comes back to Moordale in the holidays as she'll want to visit Aimee and her little sister, meaning she'll see Otis again. I just wish we also got a good ending of them both being together. Think it would of given us as fans a lot of closure. I'd die if they came back with a spin-off or S5 later down the line but I also doubt it as they will want to leave it as it is.

Season 4 brought Jean and Maeve together in a scene which I have been eagerly waiting. Even though they shared limited scenes, it was lovely, empathetic and impactful.

@@danieljabonski4705 exactly what I thought. I personally wanted them to meet back in season 2 if not 3. I mean ffs Jean was working in moordale school and Maeve was running the clinic, they could have met at some point then. I think there are lots of things that shouldn’t have happened in previous seasons, and lots of other things that should have been timed better. However over all I am releived that when Otis and Maeve shared the screen. They usually were done justice. Key word usually.

Maeve and Otis scenes together in season 4 was like season 3...mostly sad and always getting ruined by something. Their sex scene near the end was their only happy time together and it was goodbye sex 😭😭 I hate the writers for not showing more scenes of them as a couple

Yeah. And I couldn't care less about that sex part. I mean what's the point if they're not gonna be together? The thing that made otis and maeve special was not the sexual stuff but their close bond. How otis was the only one maeve had in the beginning. Idk this whole thing feels so off. Even maeves character felt off to me. Like remember how in S2 and S3 she was chasing after otis but here she didn't care much about what's going on with him. He didn't even tell her about the new school and the debate with O or anything. They felt like strangers.

I thought after all the maturing both characters did in season 2 we’d get season 3 them being together, I thought that even more after season 3 heading into season 4. @@Josh-kt6jh Yes this is what I also wanted, I had a feeling they wouldnt end the show together but I wanted to see how they were like together as a couple, we only got to see it very briefly when they went to the cinema and of course another "obstacle" comes in the way in the form of Otis' aunt 🤦‍♂ and then they went to the pool and Otis panics mid sex because he felt guilty about sleeping at Ruby's even though nothing happened 🤦‍♂🤦‍♂ the show kept throwing obstacles at them the whole time and til the very end, made me mad

This show shows the reality of teenagers, first love is not the one you always end up with, enjoy the moments together and remember the good times, it hurts to see two beautiful souls part ways, but life works its magic in different ways. Keep moving ahead and good things will happen.

I get that people are disappointed because they didn´t end up together, but I actually think that it was a great way to end the show. It was realistic. Maeve chose to try and pursue her big dream and convince herself that she´s a brilliant writer, and who knows, maybe they´ll meet again a few years later. The ending could´ve been so much worse than this.

They gave us blue balls for 3 seasons, and when they are finally together, it turns out that they actually don't end up together. What kind of BS is that? Super Anticlimatic and infuriating. 1) Could have been better if Otis ended up with Rubi at least, they made a better couple anyways. 2) Or God forbid that Maeve the feminist stayed in UK and went to college there to be together, and still become a writer. 3) Or fast forward a couple years to when Maeve and Otis finished College and reunited. 4) End it with Season 3 of Otis and Maeve finally being together, everyone graduating from Moordale and remembering all the good memories from all 3 seasons. So many options and they decided on the worst unresolved and pathetic ending. Unbelievable.🙄😡 🤬😡 I wonder if it had anything to do with the writer's strike.

The ending was OK, but would it have killed them to show them being happy for a bit in s4? Instead Otis was acting like a complete child for the sake of some artificial drama (which too be fair he's 17 - ok - but they showed development in the previous seasons). Will they/won't they is great, but as other shows have shown (eg. Parks and Rec) you're allowed to get people together and have it still be great.

I get people like realism in tv shows, but tv shows should also be some form of escapism, nobody is getting hurt for our favorite couples to stay together, it's also realistic for them to stay together and at least this way you don't displease the fans

@@FunTime-ke4vw he did make amends with Eric which i think was massive! Imagine if they ended S4 with him being really alone, no Maeve or Eric. I just feel in canon it's inevitable that Otis and Maeve get back with each other. Let's be honest if you love someone that much you'd wait for them after college/university for when you go into the real world. I understand she went to America and could find someone out there but I feel they would wait for each other.

I actually love this ending. Sometimes real life gets in the way of love. Life isn’t a fairytale, there’s no such thing as ‘the one’ if you don’t choose them. If only feeling love was enough of a glue to hold on to someone forever…

I see your point the show is very much like real life but I hold the opinion that some tv shows and movies should be different from real life that’s what gives the viewer complete escapism. For me personally tv shows and movies should transport you from the struggles and realities of daily life. They should give you a space to view a completely different world, make you feel curiosity, awe and peace. I rarely watch shows that are very similar to daily life because for me that’s boring, I would much rather watch something different.

I don’t get what they were trying to do because these two had already been apart for so damn long. They didn’t need this ending, and we didn’t either. I really loved that they tied the strings back to the fundamentals of their relationship: Otis was afraid of love, Maeve was afraid to open up. And they made each other blossom. I loved the parallels and that they underlined that aspect. But it was too little too late. I’m tired of the narrative of “doing the right thing for the character arc”. You can’t convince me Otis resigned himself to heartbreak and Maeve gave him up. I’m sure they got back together one way or the other. It doesn’t make sense to give up on a love that by dumb luck happened to be reciprocated and just about the little big things. We have that in life, the giving up, but this was unnecessary and not what anyone deserved. So to me they’re still together, loving each other

Ngl I thought the ending was bittersweet but did make sense. Wasn’t perfect and isn’t necessarily what everyone wanted but ppl always want things to just magically work out. Otis and Ruby wasn’t gonna work no matter how much ppl loved them. Would be cool to see what happens to these characters after tho. A time jump at the end would’ve been nice or even just getting some info from the creators.

The chemistry between these two feels really emotional I’ve never got that with Otis and ruby also reminds me what an actor asa is absolutely gut wrenching…it’s amazing that the cast of this show is getting so much recognition but pls don’t forget about the veteran talent that is asa butterfield

The ending of SE isn't the end of Maeve and Otis, life is a lot bigger than any TV series could ever portray regardless of how many seasons. They are 17 years old, so much still lies ahead of them, and it's down to the viewer to imagine what that could entail. I'm 47 years old and their story captured me because when I was 16 I met a girl who became my first love, including all the confusion and miscommunication that was portrayed in this show. It started as a small thing but after long distance got in the way and time went on we lost touch but I would always think about her and miss her, nobody else compared. 10 years after we parted fate brought us back together again out of the blue and we realized the feelings were mutual and it was like we'd never been apart. After just 6 months I moved across the country to be with her. Unfortunately it didn't work out, and it hurt a lot because I thought she was the one, and I tried everything. Although we fell out of love I still think about the emotions we shared and Maeve and Otis' story really hit a chord with me. What I'm trying to say is that if these two were real there's every chance that maybe in 10 years they'll be brought together again and it doesn't end in heartbreak. The ending of the show made me angry at first because I wanted for them what I came so close to getting myself but soon after I understood that this is why the show is so good, it's realistic, no sugar coating, just real. All the people who wanted MOTIS and all those that wanted ROTIS are catered for, because the show didn't close the book, it left a blank page for everyone to fill in themselves, simply titled 'Life'.

I think in season two the Otis father mentioned to him to hold on to people who likes you and accepts you. In my view the ending of season 4 is not in line with this message. They could do it differently. Maybe by Meave suggesting to Otis, she will not have time for him in the US or that she wants to dedicate her life to writing. Because in the current ending Otis wants to break up simply because she will go to US and maybe she will not return back. What he could do in the current scenario is to follow the father message and go to US with Meave.

@@marian11235813 I think you got the ending wrong. He broke up because he loves Maeve and wants her to reach her goals. He knows Maeve can't succeed in life if there is a boy across the world who wolds her back. Furthermore he can't join in the near future because he needs to help at home. And that's a fantastic message. Sometimes it is really hard to stay and let someone go, but sometimes you just simply don't have the choice, and you have to deal with it. That's life.

Maeve said she had never been more comfortable being herself than when she was living in the US and Otis just had a baby sister plus he is helping his mom. All maeve wanted to do was get out of moordale and i doubt she’ll ever want to come back unless something happens w her brother

I remain utterly confused why so many people felt he was better with Ruby. Maeve loved Otis pretty early on and loved him for who he was. She never wanted to change him, nor made him feel inadequate for who he was. They simply had a lot of bad timing and messy stuff and Isaac interfering. Maeve clearly is the product of extreme neglect and what would officially be deemed abuse. So it’s not surprising she was going to keep walls up and need to focus on her tasks at hand. Meanwhile, Ruby was ashamed of Otis and hid him and their relationship. Reprimanded him and bullied him about it. Then tried to change him to be a mini Anwar when the relationship was outed. Made him carry her purse and generally treated him like her lapdog. She may have loved him but she never was proud to be with Otis as his true self. So how is that such a great relationship and “endgame”? It’s mind boggling. I believe Otis and Maeve had a deep enough connection that there would have been a chance in the future. As they both say, “it’s always about you.”

I totally get your point, but this is what happens when writers go out of their way to completely confuse their fanbase. Many of us WERE fully invested in Otis & Maeve, & they did them so dirty that it would've actually been better if they just made Ruby endgame instead. This ending truly just sucks for all 3 of them!

Through it all, we learned how to appreciate the beautiful love they shared with each other. I know, I know it absolutely sucks they didn't remain together at the end, but let's not forget what they gave us. Love, compassion and understanding are the core values and traits they both grew to share with one another. At the beginning, Maeve shut down and kept everyone at a distance, unknowingly sabotaging every relationship with her peers. She learned to look after herself from a very young age, which debilitated her mentality towards those closest to her. It started with heartbreak, then became persistent anger, and over time, she continued to draw inwardly and forgot who she really was. It's not until when Otis came into her life, she thought it was possible to change. It took her a very long time to come to terms with this feeling, and when she learned her mum had passed on, through her continued drug use, it set Maeve back to that person she had tried to break free from before. Maeve suffered dreadfully this time around. The girl we see in the hospital, trying to finish her crossword, has similar connotations to a child waiting for a parent so she can go home. No one arrives, yet no one leaves, except her dissident brother. It's still and all she has to keep her company is a book, that she is totally abstracted with. It's all that has kept her company since the day she arrived on Earth. It was dark and gritty this time, and the way she dealt with her grief is a clear-cut reflection of her emotionally scarred mental state of mind. Jean introspectively saw Maeve for who she really is and guided her back towards the path she fell off due to the pressure, stress, and an overwhelming sense of failure. Her own family was absent for most of her life, and trusting others was seen as a threat, but all it took was trusting the right person. She did just that. Otis Milburn is the boy who fixed her disregard of trust, and pushed her towards bettering herself, for the benefit to create a future she can be happy in. It saddens me that they can't be together, and it hurts to feel and think about a future that won't happen with them in it together. They've both gone their separate ways now. Maeve and Otis not ending up together after so many years and season for build up just hurts. Season 4 was the first time where they were officially a couple, and they barely had any time together, and when they did have time together, it was always interrupted or stopped abruptly. And then at the end of it all, they go their separate ways. It’s just so unfortunate that all this time since Season 1 was built up for them to be with one another and at the end it really didn’t matter 😔

I feel like their relationship could have still worked out even with their dreams and aspirations. This ending kind of just felt unnecessarily depressing. There was no real reason for Maeve to stay in the US after her education was finished. She could have been a writer in england aswell. The writers made things seem impossibly complicated when it really wasn’t. Maybe i’m in denial idk.

Another reason why Maeve would prob stay in the US is because she felt more like herself in the US than she did in Moordale plus she always wanted to leave Moordale prob bc of all the bad memories. Now that I remember, she did leave the ashes where Isaac and Aimee were living and she said “so I have a reason to come visit you guys.” So maybe this is not the end for Otis and Maeve, it’s just a goodbye for now

Then that's you. But the realism makes me feel more connected and understanding to the series. Sometimes the best series are the best because how real it is. And besides spoiler warning, season 4 doesn't necessarily end with maeve not being together with Otis. You can also interpret how the ending is afterwards. With Otis's and maeve's connection, they can end up together. Funnily enough, people wanted Ruby to end up with Otis. Stories don't always show what you want, but think about afterwards. That letter at the end is a repetitive scene from season 1 except it's from Maeve. Just take it how you like.

Wow. This brings back so many memories. After binging 2 seasons this show became my fav Netflix show ever and then s3 came out and I loved it too. I always rooted for maeve and otis. Otis was my favorite character and I really wanted him and maeve to be happy together. Well s4 was a big disappointment. But it's okay. I still love the show even if it's not my favorite anymore. Thank you sex education for giving me these amazing characters to cherish forever.

I'm so sad because they really loved each other and now they will find different partners who they don't even love because I think love never happens twice or if it does its not the same way it was earlier. As for Otis, he didn't really accomplish much on his own, he always needed Ruby, he didn't really have any ambition, it was really a disappointment, in reality it was Ruby who was in competition with the student sexologist. As for Adam, he was no longer part of the group of friends, it's still a series about friendship

Hell, they even said they'd keep contact, they just needed some time without contact so not to lose focus on their individual goals and allow the pain of distance to affect them. I rewatched the bridge scene, remembering the almost kiss. When I looked it up to watch it again I recapped on the "I'm a virgin" after watching the scene a couple of times. I didn't understand why she did it, the most accurate is that otis didn't like her at that moment since it was only the third chapter but at the same time he had already had good moments and gestures with maeve. What makes me think that he only did those things because that was his personality and he didn't kiss her because he didn't like her at that moment... but I also think that he didn't do it because she "was" with jackson and then he met ola. I don't know I've been thinking about that

For everyone who wanted these two to be together pay attention to the shirt Maeve is wearing. Of all the clothes Maeve could have taken with her I wondered why it was that particular shirt. In Season One Episode 3 that's the shirt Otis wears when the clinic officially kicks off and they have their first clients at school. This is also the shirt she was wearing the night before she left Moordale. The night the two of them said I love you to each other. The night Otis didn't freak out because he accepted his feelings for Maeve and the possibility of heartbreak. Back to the scene, Maeve then wears something from her own wardrobe over Otis' shirt to keep her warm. A part of her own identity with his. When she says I will carry a part of you with me wherever I go, obviously it's Otis' shirt, but it's a symbol for all the experiences they went through. The clinic, school, all of it.

I loved the ending because the show at the core is about their relationship. And at the end of the relationship(as far as we know) and the end of the show coincide and both individuals grew to be a better version of themselves. The show conveys an excellent message of people being in your life at the moment can help you grow. While they may not be apart of your life forever enjoy the moments and memories. Although other people live vicariously through media, I don’t get mad at a show because it didn’t make me happy.

It's been 1 week I finished the last season, and I just keep thinking about this love story every day. I'm a big boy 25yo, not a big fan of love stories tbh but this series was magnificient since first episod. Last season was a bit weird with the new college and lgbt+ mindset, but all I wanted to see was the evolution of these two (and poor ruby). They keep us awake since first episod with a lot of emotions and frustration beetween them and I remember myself multiple time behind my screen SO frustrated FFS TELL HER YOUR FELLINGS ! I know this is all the point of this show but damn ! Never felt this frustration that hard on a movie I think it was a good finish, frustrating as always but not disapointing. I surprised myself almost crying multiple times watching this beautiful journey and I will remember it for a looong time. Idk why i'm telling you this but I have to share my felling to someone who feel the same, or almost I use a lot the word frustrating but this is the perfect adjective for this series

Like everyone else on this post, I am so gutted that Maeve and Otis didn’t end up together, because it does just feel like four seasons of buildup for no ending which is really upsetting. Absolute masterpiece mate. The series is this relationship. I hated it and loved it at the same time. The annoyance of them liking each other at the same but different times and then they got together and another obstacle. They defined what a relationship should be, to love another for who they are and to make each other better. The ending I also thought was great heart breaking, so sad but brilliant. Confessing their love for each other but having to make the hardest choice of their lives which they know is better for one another, again showing their love. Maeve’s letter at the end is so sad but again emphasises how they’ve benefited and grown together. We are too used to the fairytale happy ever after and the ending showed realism and was so f***ing sad. Even though season 4 was all over the place I stayed for this relationship and it did not disappoint, the ups,the downs, the raw emotion and growth I loved it.

i refuse to believe that we’ll never see them again. the writers did them 𝐬𝐨 𝐝𝐢𝐫𝐭𝐲 in season 4 and i’ll never forgive them for that. we never got to see them happily together. sure, they had their good moments in season 4 but it was mainly just depressing, sad and unnecessary drama.. people keep talking about how realistic that was but firstly, it’s still fiction. not everything has to be so dead serious and realistic - we live in real life, that’s enough. and secondly, there was enough stuff in that show which wasn’t realistic either but no one comments on that. maeve and otis deserved the world. the fans waited for years and then, they fucked up the ending. no way, maeve and otis won’t stay in touch for a while. have you seen them in the first three seasons? anyway, great edit!! i really loved it. they’ll be dearly missed. 🥺💔

I felt the love between those two cuties through my screen and it really warmed my soul. Thanks, this ending is really romantic. I really think its well done, it doesn’t matter if we are frustrated to not see them finish together because we know it was true love, it ended with an act of true love which is letting each other go for the better, the most difficult choice to make. We can also imagine them reunite one day or not. But they will keep a memory and a part of each other for life. First true love is never forgotten! It lives in us till the end.

I was yelling, no, no, no at the end! But, the ending was consistent with every other season. These two have had barrier after barrier getting in their way. The story is not finished. The writer's have left this up to us to decide how it ends. I believe that down the road they meet again. Their love is too strong to keep them apart. Love always finds a way.
