Even indoor cats can get fleas. It's not as easy or common, but it happens. What I don't understand is being so blind to it. I'm happy that seeing signs of distress, the vet was called. That's the important thing. After all, becoming educated fixes things going forward. Years ago I had a roommate with a blonde cocker spaniel. She walked him daily and insisted his itching was due to an allergic reaction to grass. Well one day that poor pooch rolled over so I could scratch his belly and fleas scattered everywhere. I told her, "if he's allergic to grass, his allergy has legs". Anyway, she got him properly treated, told him what a bad Mom she was, and that was the end of it. I could never figure out why she was so resistant to the idea her dog might have fleas though.

that is weird, but what I'm more baffled by is if she thought he had a grass allergy, why would she walk him in the grass?

Yeah, some people are blind to it. It's a 'my dog can't get fleas' thing. We dog sat a friend's dog for a few weeks and about a week in found out his fur was moving. After weeks of this dog sitting on my bed and on the couch it was a gross moment. He slept on the floor after that. Thankfully, our own pets were already regularly treated with preventative medication. The preventative is so worth it! I can't stand bugs like that.

the reason she was probably so insistent was because she didn't want to admit she was wrong or that anything was wrong with the dog

Had a flea infestation years ago. I got a new kitten from a pet store and already had an adult rescue cat. The kitten came with fleas!! My cats do not go outside so once they were cleaned up, there were no more fleas. I had to treat the carpet, furniture, pretty much everything in the house. The first bath I gave them in flea killer shampoo from our vet, the water in the tub was blood red from the flea poo. Fleas were jumping off them into the water, there were thousands!! I had to bath them every day for a few days. I could not believe the number of fleas. I would wake up in the night and one would be crawling over my forehead. It was disgusting. This was before the days off the drops on the back of the neck, so it was a major operation to get rid of them. Persistence paid off though. Both of these kitties, Katie and Milandra lived to ripe old ages of 19 and 17. They were the best! No more fleas since then!

That should tell you how bad it is to buy from a Pet Store aka a kitten/puppy mill. If the kitten came with flea infestation, you cannot imagine the condition the parents are in.

I adopted what was basically a stray and he had fleas, daily vacuuming and flea combing, combined with giving him dawn dishsoap baths in the sink. It was Nasty, that first bath was brownish red, but he was flea free in 3 days, we put flea drops on his neck to ensure any eggs/larvae died, and we haven't had an issue since then. Flea free for a year straight now.

Fleas are so disgusting aren't they! 🤮 I was Cat-sitting my Cousin's Kitten for a couple of days and he had quite a few fleas. I had never been around an Animal before that had more than a few fleas, so it was quite a shock for me. 🤮 My Cousin already knew and was already treating the problem. When she came back from her trip, we both sat there with a Flea comb and a bowl of hot water, combing the fleas off him and then dunking the comb into the hot water to get the fleas off it and to kill them instantly. 🤮 xxx

@@lillydee5978 Agreed. Almost all of our pets have come from animal shelters and we've never had a problem yet. We might only have some of their history, but it's a lot better than we'd get at a pet store and we know they're in good health when we get them.

We have had cats for many yrs, right now we have 8, that's a bit many I know but people have dropped kittens here in middle of night as we live in a mostly secluded place, we fall in love with them. For yrs we have used Advantage Multi for cats over 10 lbs and has worked real well until now as they now have a flea outbreak. Our cats are safely able to go outside during the day (they love it) but we make sure they come in at sunset. We have also used Frontline with good results which covers only topical parasites such as fleas and ticks but its good. This sudden flea outbreak has us searching for answers as what has worked for yrs is not working now.

Fleas are even hard to miss on a white cat, if you don't expect them or are an inexperienced owner. We got a rescue cat from a foster family which actually did get a brand spot-on product. Turns out that the fleas in the area had become immune to Frontline. So yeah, no hate on the owner.

We have to be very observant of signs of fleas with my eldest cat. He's sixteen years old and when he's infested, he starts tearing his fur out and experiences seizure like symptoms which results in him urinating himself and mutilating his left back foot. As soon as he starts doing these things and I start finding one on me, it's off to the vet for some bravecto for him and my other two who just turned one last month.

One minute once a month or once every three months is all you need to stop all that from happening. You’d be doing yourself and your cat a favour, and your wallet too. @jordanral7945
@jordanral7945 2 жыл бұрын
@@dawnj2360 usually you don't really have to give preventatives to a strictly indoor cat. The flea situations was very mainly bad when I had my dog whom sadly passed away from kidney failure over a month ago. She was the very main one that needed the prevention because she was a fifteen pound pekapom that needed to go outside to pee and poop every four hours. There were a couple times that we didn't get more before the final round was gone and when it has happened, everyone got their flea medication and once there where no more signs, we continued to medicate the dog. Before getting a dog, we never had a problem with fleas with our strictly indoor cats unless one had managed to get past us out through the door. We did medicate Maui and Moana after their first vet visit a couple times and as a precaution, we also medicated Raven, the sixteen year old. No problems as of then.

don't wanna play the Devil's advocate here, but when you don't expect fleas, it's harder to see them. And its fur is not only dark, but also super dense, so fleas are even harder to spot. And you can also make them outside, they too need sun. If you're afraid of the road, harness and leash and boom, no problem. (ofc while keeping an eye on em)

@@Dragonalfanimations I agree about the fur, but disagree on the outdoors. A seconds inattention and your cat has hopped a fence and walked out of your sight. I've got no problem with you building an outdoor kennel for them, but letting them loose is a good way to lose them and never know what happened one day. And yes, I've had outdoor cats. And yes, I don't know what happened to one. I learned that lesson. My cats are indoors now and no one is changing my mind about that. Agreed, but honestly, even inside they can still get it. A dog we dog sat brought fleas into our house. Thankfully our own pets were on preventative. I don't know how people can push for outdoor cats though. I've had them in the past and regretted it. There's just too many cars around and there's frequent reports of cat killers around me now. (8 were killed last year, one of my neighbors is a psychopath apparently.) I've trained cats to walk on the leash before and I'd much prefer they get their outdoor time safely than deal with the stress of never knowing what happened when my cat just doesn't come home one day.
